RateBeer Brew Tour Guide's Comments
Why You Should Go:
Voted RateBeer’s #16th Best US brewer for 2005, Southampton Publick House is the real deal! All you have to do is read the superlatives about Southampton beers, the majority of which are available only at the Southampton Publick House itself, and you might begin drooling.
Southampton, NY, is a getaway for the rich and famous, so you just might bump into local residents P. Diddy, Ralph Lauren or Calvin Klein, among other glitterati. The microbrewery itself is a clean, wooden-interiored, polished-brass affair that seems more restaurant than brewery. Waitstaff are unrelentingly charming and courteous, as is the Southampton way.
History:
The Southampton Publick House was established in July, 1996 as the first and only Microbrewery/Restaurant on the East End of Long Island. Phil Markowski, a respected veteran East Coast Brewmaster from Connecticut, was recruited to handle the brewing.
How To Get There:
To get to Southampton, NY (located on Long Island), you can either drive or take the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) from Penn Station in Manhattan to the Southampton LIRR station.
An express LIRR train will take 1 hr, 58 mins. The Publick House is a 3 block walk from the Southampton train station.
Southampton is about understated wealth. Think Aston Martin, not Ferrari. Should you continue south from the microbrewery toward the Atlantic Ocean, you’ll pass by homes in the $15-20 million range, most with pool, tennis court and a slice of privately owned beachfront. Tip: Despite the Southampton beach being privately owned, you are legally allowed to walk on the sand as long as you stay by the water’s edge. Try not to go peeking in anyone’s back windows lest you be mistaken for paparazzi.
Two Birds, One Stone:
On your trip back to Manhattan, consider stopping at the Black Forest Brew Haus brewpub in Farmingdale, NY (halfway between Southampton and Manhattan) to taste their wares.

LilBeerDoctor | Nice restaurant/brewpub. I’ve been there twice in the afternoon and both have been good times. The food is pretty good and service is excellent. They have 5 beers on tap year round and 2-3 seasonals ($5-$6 per pint). Plus they have their bombers and 750s available. The atmosphere is quite pleasant and they have several large TVs with sports on regularly. Realize that this brewpub is quite far east on LI and sometimes it’s hit or miss with their seasonals. But if you are nearby, it’s a fun place to go.

CharlesDarwin | In all honesty, I was rather underwhelmed by this place. I took the train down from Montauk one evening this January to get the full experience. I walked over from the train station and found the place in a largely sleepy state (it was mid-week). I took a seat at the bar and was promptly ignored. I ordered a sampler and a crab-cake sandwich. The sandwich was ho-hum and the beers in the sampler were pretty middle of the road. The few fellow bar patrons were an interesting mixed bag of Hamptonites and displaced NYCers. I wasn’t able to buy any beers from the brewery that I haven’t seen anywhere else. Maybe worth a stop if they’ve got something special going on, otherwise, just seek out their limited beers.

dmac | Wow the comments are all over the place for this one. I was there on Saturday Feb 16th for the IRS release. Let me start by saying the bartender, Chris?, really impressed me. The crowd had to be 3-4 times the usual Saturday lunch crowd becasue of the release but he handled it like an expert. No one waited more then a few minutes, he remembered everyones order and ws really on top of his game. They only serve their own beer so the beer list isn’t that impressive but soid none the less (about 6 beers that day including the IRS). The food is average to slightly above average, the nachos were good but the crab cake was very generic and seemed like a giant version of a frozen and reheated appetizer. If your gonna hit up several places on LI then it’s worth stopping by here. To go just for this place I would have to say unless there is a special release it’s probably not worth the drive.

adrian910ss | Nice place in an affluent community. Drove up from Philly with a couple of beer geeks for the release of the imperial stout. Nice atmosphere and good food. Will come again.

hopdog | Nice place. I only stopped by to pick up their RIS that was being released today. Didn’t eat any food (but my kids enjoyed their pasta!). I would definitely stop in again if I’m ever in the area.

| WhiteAlePower | One of my favourite places to go in the country. The food is always top notch, along with their selection of beers! HIGHLY recommended for those who are not afraid of the Hamptons.

yobdoog | Nice place, pretty large and can hold a crowd. The food is always good when I go and the beers are great. Seems to be a place that people go for the dj or mixed drinks than the beer even though it is a brewpub which is strange. I plan on goingmore for releases like the DEB.

smartlung | not really sure what I can add to this place. I wish I had not gone early in the afternoon and only had time for 1 beer. Will have to visit my relatives more often ) What a great spot

| HoppityHop | Place looks like a run-down Bennigan’s. You know the deal, "antique" crap all over the walls, etc. Restrooms were dirty and unkept, even at the early hour of 4 pm on a Friday afternoon. The selection of beers were five "regulars" (a light beer along with all their contract brewed stuff), five bottled "Belgians" (more stuff you can easily get elsewhere), and then five "seasonals". Tried the Burton Ale and the Oktoberfest. Burton was honestly quite good, and the Oktoberfest was decently average. However, I don’t travel to the edge of nowhere for five special brews and TEN that are readily available across the northeast. Service was nothing special and totally unknowledgeable about beer. Then again, more people doing shots than drinking beer! Honestly, this has to be one of the most overrated brew pubs on earth, and I have a theory; People drive three hours in Wrong Island traffic due to all the amazing reviews.......then, after the long drive, they want to make it worth while, whether they have anything interesting on tap or not. The more they drink, the better the reviews.

RblWthACoz | My 30th birthday celebratory lunch scene. (probably should have picked somewhere else on hindsight)
I wasn’t impressed at all unfortunately by the Publick House in any means. Service was quite possibly the worst I have had in as long as I can remember. The beer list was weak. I mean come on. Let’s put some heavy hitters up for all the people who drove 120 miles to get here. Food was not very good. And that was after waiting nearly 25 to 30 minutes for it (not an exaggeration).
I am just glad I visited here while visiting the Hamptons as a whole. If I had taken the train from NYC just to visit here (it had been a plan in the works), I would have been pretty pissed off.
