June 7, 2007 Stopped in on a whim, found some really great brews for cheap went home and after sampling discovered about half of my purchase was well past expiration date. This store is on the northern outskirts of downtown Canton. The staff is not helpful and speaks broken english. The selection is really good except the coolers that held the good beer had burnt out lights and a layer of water on the bottom leading me to believe that temperature control could be a problem. Questionable clientele really an overall shady store that I felt uneasy in. The Avenue Wine Shop is just up the road so if you’re in the area head there instead. |
August 11, 2004 Located near downtown Canton (not a very nice area), Phil’s is a flat non-descript building with plenty of parking.
The store definitely leans toward wine. Inside, half the store is devoted to wine, and the other half is shared by beer and convenience store items. All of the beer is in coolers right by the door.
The beer selection is fair. Between Phil’s and Avenue Wine Shop it’s probably the best you can do in the area. Phil’s carries Victory, Bell’s, Rogue and other better-distributed regional beers. Likewise they have some of the easier to find imports like Chimay and a fair selection of German beers.
Where Phil’s loses points is they only accept cash (they are a State liquor store). The service was decent, but for people like myself who don’t carry much cash it can lead to some problems. However, they do have an ATM on site.
Overall Phil’s might be worth a shot in the downtown Canton area, but with stores like Acme now carrying as good if not better selections of beer in better areas and accepting credit cards, you might want to pass. |
