The purpose of this place rating is that I since BJs is a chain, I wasn’t sure of/able to find the beers from this location. This brewer is exceptionalperhaps one of the best in Portland and the Pacific Northwest. Like other TGIFinnegans/Rock Bottom/Applebees like places, the atmosphere and motif is quite generic and stale. The bartenders at the Janzen Beach location were quite friendly, accomidating, and fairly knowledgable of the brewer’s selection. Also, like other chain brewery’s the standard selection was proffered, but on top of that, the house special beers were indeed special. A wonderfully floral IPA (A+), a bright and crisp flavorful pumpkin ale (not a big fan of this genre of beer, but it was well crafted, B+), a chocolate stout (B), an oatmeal stout (B-), and a wonderfully bright, floral and well-balanced barley wine (light bodied, yet distictly balanced like Avery’s Hog Heaven, A) were all sampled in 5-ounce glass pours. I left feeling quite sated and very pleased. Well worth the 9+ mile drive from SE Portland. If you get a chance, quaff these delectable brews. I was also told that the Pirhana Pale Ale won a silver at the 2007 GABF. No surprise considering the craftsmanship of the brews I sampled!

This is a nice place with a great view, the food is average and the beer selection here is better than the other locations, because the owner and brewer is a huge fan of Belgians and even has a selection of sometimes hard to find Belgians in bottles behind the bar. The bar staff was great and seemed to care a little bit about the beer.

Inside this has a nice restaurant/bar feel with a great view of the brewery as you enter. Everything here is pretty standard as far as chains go. The beers are put on focus here with everything revolving slightly around them. The staff was great and friendly and the food was f’ing awesome. I had a custom made pizza and it was perfect. No complaints about the quality or beer selection either, they even had an Imperial Stout on tap! Overall this was a nice place to come and relax. Not something to really seek out, but worth visiting if you’re in the neighborhood.
