chwilliams (1), Hood Rover, Oregon does not count - explanation | | November 21, 2007 Solid homebrew shop with a dedicated grain room and a fridge full of fresh Northwest hops. The folks in there were fun to talk to and eagerly helped me find a few items. | | 11026 (57), | | April 19, 2006 Great brewing store tucked away in SE PDX. Huge selection, good prices. The place to go for setting up and maintaining draft equipment. Some of the workers can be grumpy at times, but decent enough. Ambience is homebrew, nothing charming. Oregon brew crew meets here. | | BückDich (216), Boise, Idaho | | January 4, 2006 I’ve never been to their storefront but I’ve ordered from them several times. They are always fast and friendly and everything I get is cheap and fresh. It’s worth nothing that if you’re a homebrew sake maker in the US and want to make something even slightly resembling premium sake and not rotgut, THIS is the ONLY place to get it. Not only can you get polished Akita Matchi rice, which is milled down (seimaibuai) to 58-63% of its original size. This puts you in the range of tokubetsu or even ginjo. They also have ready made koji, using the same premium rice. These are both made by SakeOne out in Forest Grove, so it’s a fairly decent product! So far I’ve found this is the only place in the US that you can order (as a consumer) milled sake rice. Order up a pack of wyeast sake yeast and all you need is water and nutrients to make a very fine sake. Read Fred Eckhardt’s "New Sake Recipe" PDF if you’re interested. | | DA (117), Portland, Oregon City, Oregon | | July 26, 2005 Great homebrew store with about anything you could ever want to find. They have some old portland and NW beers that haven’t been around for a long time for decoration, might be a cool place if you have a bottle collection to see. The people there can seem a bit unfriendly when you are new to the place, kinda assume you know what you are doing, even though every homebrew store does things a different way. I guess I will rate the selection based on the homebrew supplies, no beer on tap though. | | batkins (76), Vancouver, Washington | | May 21, 2005 Beer and wine making supplies since 1918. Complete line of materials and equipment. Also has classes. Oregon Brew Crew meetings are usually held here. Very helpful and informative staff |
