| Rune (87), Tromsø, Norway | | March 29, 2008 White Horse is a small and intimate Freehouse centrally located in the Broad Street of Oxford. It is stocked between Blackwells book shops and very close to Balliol College. Classic pub feeling with a good range of well-kept real ales, Brakspear Oxford Gold, TT Landlord, White Horse Wayland Smithy among others. Seven hand pumps including a cider and rotating guest ales. Music-free and a very cosy, relaxing atmosphere. I had brunch here early on a Monday afternoon – a tasty homemade Ham sandwich. Polite, friendly and talkative barman. Photo of inspector Morse and Lewis on the wall that seemed to attract tourists. In the TV series Morse’s red Jaguar can be seen parked outside White Horse. Very short walking distance to the spacious Young’s pub Kings Arms and Tuft Tavern (visited 17.03.2008). | | haddonsman (56), Derby, England | | March 12, 2008 My kind of pub in a tourist city: single roomed, bare boarded, few shoppers and students. White Horse Wayland Smithy was in good nick. Let the masses ponce off to the Turf : if you need to press the escape button whilst in the city, divert in here. No rambling historical clams, no fancy food, just decent basic beer and conversation. | | SilkTork (58), Rochester, England | | February 17, 2008 Small pub. Has a solid atmosphere and plenty of bare wood. A Morse pub apparently. Great. 4 casks including Landlord, but all fairly standard. | | hughie (21), Bedford, England | | February 14, 2008 Superbly atmospheric, dark and claustrophobic. Not the greatest beer selection but worth a visit for historical associations. Toilets were fair. | | JoeMcPhee (262), Jackson Heights, New York | | November 1, 2007 Cool little pub, low ceilings and rickety tables. Very old fashioned. About four decent casks and some good food as well. Very diverse crowd, but that’s part of the charm. | | Doppelganger (20), Dry County, Arkansas | | November 23, 2006 The White Horse is the most charming place I have ever sat and had a pint. Two steps down off of High Street, cozy, wood paneled and low-ceilinged. A wonderfully mixed clientel, from sweet gray-haired grannies to the occational student looking to escape the usual student haunts. A wonderfull place for a chat. The beer selection is fair: there are six taps, but I’ve only seen three different things on at once. Usually something from the White Horse Brewery (no affiliation) available, which for me at least, makes up for a lack of big selection. Quality of the ales will vary. In the summer, you’re apt to get a bit of sulfur and other signs of oxidation. In the winter, you’re luck will probably be better. | | imdownthepub (85), Banbury, England | | November 20, 2004 The White Horse is making a comeback in terms of beer. The boring old range is being replaced with interesting guests and the whole pub has blossomed again because of it.Small and cramped but packed with character, a must now on any Oxford tour. |
