10 reviews for Le Lion d’Or/The Golden Lion
Service wasn’t very good when I went. Beer selection is good but those are average in general. A place to try if you want something new. | | MartinT (348), Montreal, Quebec | | October 9, 2007 We sat in the street-level tavern and had the Bitter and Brown Ale from the tap. A giant screen was showing the Canadians hockey game, but few people seemed to care. Everybody was sitting at the bar carrying friendly but mildly uninterested discussions. We might have hit them on a tired evening (Saturday evening though...), but I felt like I was in a dingy hole-in-the-wall of a pub even though the exterior announces you’ll be spending the night in a quaint old house. The beers were quite average too, maybe less interesting than their bottled counterparts. Overall, had I not been in good company, this would have been a very boring stopover. | | Goldorak (110), Montreal, Quebec | | October 19, 2006 The brewery complex is in a separate building right next door. The pub looks like a really fun undergrad hangout. The lone waitress came along soon after we sat down and broke down the menu for us in a very simplistic but effective manner. The beer I was most looking forward to try, the bitter, was out so I went with the stout instead. The rest were pretty basic English styles, a blonde, amber and brown ales. Beers were okay, the stout was my favorite of the lot. Nothing to go crazy about, but decent value since the pints were dirt cheap. The waitress eventually came back for our food orders, and apologized in advance as the food waiter didn’t show up and she never did this before. I had a feeling she was in for a long night when I walked by the kitchen and it totally reeked of wacky tabacky. She had the menu written down on a piece of cardboard and was barely legible. Basic pub fare was offered, no complaints about the food, looks like Cheech and Chong know how to cook! I wouldn’t drive an hour and a half from Montreal just to hit this place, but if you’re in the Sherbrooke area it’s worth a detour. | | LadySusan (77), Ste-Therese, Quebec | | August 21, 2006 The beer choice is good, the thing is they have good beers and bad ones. The service was not good because the waitress was in a rush and could not describe the choice of beers at all. | | Ungstrup (245), Frederiksberg, Denmark | | August 28, 2005 A very English pub in Quebec, standard, slightly worn pub interior, with a shady patio, though right next door to a busy intersection. The service was prompt and in English - the brewer was nice to talk to. The food was OK for pub grub - I had the burger. 4 beers on tap, of varying quality around average. | | Rastacouere (475), Montréal, Quebec | | July 29, 2005 Standard english pub atmosphere. Mostly english town. Friendly efficient service. Gentleman-mannered brewmaster-owner. Typical 4-5 beers selection, all are fairly robust examples of their style. Disappointed by my fish and chips, but I hear the food is great for the evenings. | | Oakes (421), gone rambling, Vietnam | | July 22, 2005 Standard old house pub much like you’ll find all over Canada’s central and eastern provinces. Service was fine enough. The house bitters were both excellent. Met the brewer and he was friendly. They didn’t try very hard with the food, though. It wasn’t the greatest place, but I went to school in a small town very much like Lennoxville and I would have been pretty damn happy to have had a place like this. | | tiggmtl (117), Vancouver, British Columbia | | July 19, 2005 Cosy hunter green and wood panelling, country pub type atmosphere with a large patio area for outdoor service. Service was friendly and reasonably prompt if somewhat unknowledgable about the beers. Meeting the brewer was a bonus and he was very engaging to talk with. There were four beers on tap. One was not very good and the other were all varying shades of good to very good. Food was fairly priced and of decent quality if not exactly exciting. Overall, though I can’t say I’m in a rush to return, I may well do so in the future. |
