RateBeer Brew Tour Guide's Comments
This famous Montreal brewpub has been brought back to life from a quite stable and mainstream style selection by a young brewer…This new beer lover’s proficiency is very impressive and the high quality and originality of his lagers and ales is very enticing…Usually 6 to 8 beers on tap and 1 to 3 other bottled beers make up quite a hefty menu that usually creates some frustration due to the fact that you can’t humanly taste all of this and remain coherent…But, man, do you want to give it a try!…A 2-minute walk from L’Amère à Boire, Montreal’s wonderful lager haunt, creates exhilarating style comparisons for a beer tasting evening…Needless to say, a taxi is imperative after visiting them both! (Or 15 minute walk from Metro Berri-Uqam)
Note: This brewpub does not sell the same beers that come from the Cheval Blanc (now called RJ) bottling line…

| | robinvboyer (19), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario | | August 7, 2008 This place looks weird, and sort of run down. The beer was excellent, i didnt have any food cause i was busy hopping the brew pubs. Nice staff, but not that comfortable of a place to stay at a long time. | | MikeF (69), Cleveland, Ohio | | May 15, 2008 slight punk, hard rock slant. They’ll heat you up a hot dog if you like, but the food menu was otherwise limited when I visited. A few of their on brews on draft worth the stop in to try. | | minibus (19), Gatineau, Quebec | | December 16, 2007 I came here with high expectations and was a little disappointed. The beer selection might not have been at its best the two times I went there, but it is not in the same league as Dieu du ciel or l’amère à boire. Beers where OK, but nothing more. But as I said, lots of people really love this place, so I might just have got there at the wrong time. | | Sammy (206), Toronto, Ontario | | August 21, 2007 A better than average quality beer place East of downtown and north of Old Montreal. A must stop for the beer geek. Safe. Just about every table taken, but the bar fairly wide open, so where do you think I sat. Crowd of Twenties to Fourties Quebecoix, with the long hair thing. Bartender was knowledgeable and competent and in charge. Very reasonabley priced. Fairly dark at night. Like other Quebec establishments, something to read for my non-drinking friends, in English please. | | mabel (71), Toronto, Ontario | | August 13, 2007 Surprisingly calm on a Saturday night, this low lighting, mellowed out jazz beat brewpub is certainly unique. Service was bored but did what they had to do. Selection is broad and seven of their own were all available on tap and were fairly tasty (blonde, blanche, pale ale, ambree, framboise, noire and jalepeno). Food menu is small -- nachos were really tasty and filling, though it’s my fault for leaving them for a bit as they turned super soggy. Overall, I’m glad to have gone and would return again, but I’m a little surprised it’s rated so highly. | | GirlyBeer (13), Biddeford, Maine | | July 8, 2007 This place was one of the more interesting beer bars I’ve ever been to. Long and narrow with a dais at the end that with lights pointed towards it, possibly for live music. It had tables set up on it while we were there, so we sat there. The interior was mostly black and red. Samplers came in squares, not long paddles, which made them easier to set on a table. The bathroom was the worst I’ve ever experienced. You had to sit sideways on the toilet to get your knees to fit. The bathroom floor was wet too.
I remember liking the music, it was an eclectic mix. | | DYCSoccer17 (171), Davis, California | | September 7, 2006 Visited this place on a Wednesday afternoon, shortly after it had opened. My brother and I were the first ones there, but a few others came in not long afterwards. Music is sort of a jazzy french pop motif. The interior of the bar seemed like it used to be a diner with pretty ugly lime green colorings on the walls with a big stainless steel bar top and some permanent stools for thirsty patrons. Toward the rear of the pub, there is a little elevtated area with maroon felt drapings on the wall, presumably for live entertainment. There is also a seating at an old mashtun that is covered as well. I did not explore the bathroom facilities, but my brother mentioned that there was no place to take a dump in the men’s room and that he was forced to lay his log in the women’s room. They had about 6 or 7 beers on tap. Bartender seemed friendly. I did not have any food. | | heemer77 (134), Savannah, Missouri | | June 6, 2006 Very small and crowded on a Friday night. The atmosphere is a little sterile to me. The smapler set was cool. Very nice session style beer. A very good brewpub overall. Worth a stop especially if you like session style beers. | | hopscotch (135), Vero Beach, Florida | | May 7, 2006 I love the place. The decor and fact that everything is kept as it has almost always been (with photos to prove it) is a real big hit with me. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable regarding their products. The crowd is young and cool. Like all other brewpubs in Montreal, the place is too smoky. Also, it all comes down to selection with me. With the exception of Dieu Du Ciel, the local beer scene is weak. I would have to say this is a distant second in the race for best brewpub in Montreal. Very nice. Certainly worth a visit. | View Page : 1 2 3 4
