15 reviews for Fromagerie du Marché Atwater
| j12601 (52), Poughkeepsie, New York | | April 9, 2009 While not a beer shop per se, and more of a grocery and cheese shop, they’ve got a nice selection of Quebec brews, though not the two (Ch, Biero) that I was looking for, but a fair representation of a number of others, most of them unknown to me. Prices seemed reasonable, and the location is great. Go for a light afternoon snack in the market, and grab a bottle or two for later. | | elihapa (62), Honolulu, California | | October 9, 2008 This is a place that has benefitted immensely from location. Tucked in a wonderful farmer’s market in a central area of Montreal proper, it gets a lot of foot traffic. And for good reason. Their cheese selection is immense, and from what I could tell, the staff is quite knowledgeable. A pity things didn’t go as well for me in the beer area. Given that their interior walls are lined with bottles of craft beer, I found their selection to be just average. They have a heavy bias towards Quebec microbrews, along with a couple of French ones (coincidence??). Although admirable, all I can remember about their selection is that it did not carry any of the key Quebec breweries I was looking for. If you find yourself here, focus on the fresh vegetables and fruit and you will be a happier camper than I was. | | notalush (159), Denver, Colorado | | August 24, 2008 A quaint shop located in one of the most impressive farmers markets I’ve seen - there’s a lot around to please the foodie - the store itself has a small section of beer - they had mostly Quebec brews (most of which I’d never heard of) and a couple of French and Belgian imports - they didn’t have much of what I was looking for (no charlevoux, only one bieropholie, etc.), but the selection seemed okay, I guess - the staff seemed surprised (and even a little annoyed) that someone from out of town was shopping there - a decent place, but I won’t come back the next time I’m in town. | | WeeHeavySD (102), San Diego (Hillcrest), California | | November 26, 2007 I took a quick trip over here on my first day in montreal and it had a pretty nice selection. Clearly it was by far the best selection in this part of town, SAQ down the block didn’t seem to have much as well as a local wine shop. Can’t say I know a lot about what should be sold in a good Quebec beer store but this place had a lot and the prices seemed to be fine. | | Goldorak (110), Montreal, Quebec | | November 16, 2006 In the heart of the Atwater market, a short stroll from the Lionel-Groulx metro (not Atwater), I love browsing around here, getting good cooking ideas and a feel for what’s in season. The fromagerie is, as mentioned by the others, predominantly a cheese shop, so while you’re here I strongly urge you to check out some local cheeses (very helpfull staff, that know their cheese, but most are Beer novices). Beer is to your right as you enter, check out the glassware over the fridges. Decent selection, some rarities, prices are usually fair, sometimes cheaper than elsewhere. Low turnover is perhaps the only question mark here. Recommended. | | destroye7 (13), Melbourne, Australia | | May 19, 2006 Nice place. Nice people. I didn’t use any help for the beer. I bought a few bottles that you don’t usually find in groceries (well regulars groceries, Metro Joanette is exceptionnal !!). I got a Saint-Arnould special edition l’eveque. Really nice. You can buy a 6 pack or single beers. A few glasses to choose from. Good place to begin with ! | | muzzlehatch (255), Burlington, Vermont | | December 10, 2005 Well they have most all of the major Quebec beer brands, some of which they seem to get before other places...and the prices are not uncompetitive...but the main reason to stop here is the excellent cheese selection, and the fact that you can also go to the SAQ Terroirs d’Ici which is in the same building, with one of the two best cider/mead selections in town (the other being the Marche des Saveurs)...add to that an awesome patisserie with great croissants, sausage shops that will make a vegetarian’s eyes water...if you have the slightest trace of the gourmand in you, this is a must. | collieman (4), montreal, Quebec does not count - explanation | | November 11, 2005 A great cheese store with a nice selection of quebec beer. Smells of fine olives and strong cheese. Selesction of beer is wide, but not as wide as other beer stores in the city. Along with the standard boreal, unibrew and mcauslan offerings, and the standard macros, you will find several choices from small town quebec, plus l’alcamiste, bieropholie, la barberie, and all the other hard, but not too hard, to find quebec brews, but often beers are dusty and past their peak Glassware selection is extencive, from belguin snifters to the irish nonic. A few ciders, and people tell me if I look harder I’ll find some meads. Stalf is not very knowlageable, but very friendly and helpfull and they will ask around to see if anyone who works there can answer you’re question if they cant.I normaly fill my school bag with 10-15 bottles every time I’m in the neibourhood, selection is worth the back breaking 1 hour metro/bus ride home.Specialty food’s from quebec selection is very nice, vinigars and the such, with a great selection of cheese and olives, although I am partial to the cheddars at the other cheese shop in the market. Cheers |
