| swoopjones (115), Buffalo, New York | | October 12, 2009 bright, big place with not a lot of ambiance. Great selection though. Possibly the best selection i encountered in both england & scotland. Plenty of casks & even had Stone, DFH & Flying Dog there | | evilempire (14), sheffield, England | | February 26, 2008 a very variable experience. in the afternoons pleasant atmosphere and good service, but in the evening (especially around weekend) unpleasantly full and impossible to get served. I find it a useful place, as it’s somewhere I can drink with ’normals’ while still getting a decent British or foreign beer. foreign list long but ultimately a bit tame for those of us who travel abroad. | | Rastacouere (475), Montréal, Quebec | | August 26, 2007 Obnoxious, very popular and loud place in a rather poshy building. Not particularly welcoming, but I guess it can be calmer in the early afternoon. Remarkable selection though, including stuff like Jaipur and more obscure breweries. I don’t like the place ultimately, but the selection is grand.. Still, if you have only a day in Sheffield, you could skip as there’s plenty of beers elsewhere. | | DJMonarch (83), Northwich, England | | August 11, 2007 Very modern looking pub which isn’t at all in keeping with the other Sheffield ale places. Has the look of a Wetherspoons initially, very urban type place. Nothing wrong with the beer selection on offer though which includes the ales on handpump and a good bottled beer menu. Had my first Canadian beer on tap in here once. | | jobyone (14), Charlotte, | | August 8, 2007 Great place for good beer. They have around 150 bottles and 20 drafts. Most of the drafts are traditional English beers. Which for an American living in England was always nice.
But the bottle selection was great with good Belgian (Rochefort, Westmalle, Bush/Scaldis etc) as well as good German (Aventinus, Celebrator). They also began to get good American beer when they could. I like to think my constant business and pestering worked. All the beers were seved in the correct glasses which is good.
The food was decent pub grub but usually the best stuff was on the special board. All prepared fresh and constantly changing menu.
The staff was hit and miss. In 6 years I must of seen 100 or so people come and go. Those that stayed around tended to recognize me and were always helpful.
Heck I even was given a free magnum bottle of Bush Noel when I ordered the Bush 10 and Bush 12.
This was a great place and well worth stopping in. | RobBestwick (2), Sheffield, England does not count - explanation | | December 16, 2006 This is the best place in Sheffield to get a selection of good beers, both on tap and bottled. There is a substantial beer menu and a good selection of guest beers. You often see the landlord there for a few pints as well. The food is above average and there are generally some attractive women behind the bar. There is no music either, which is a good thing in a pub like this. | | MesandSim (26), London, England | | September 12, 2006 [ Updated March 14, 2008 ] An odd place. Looks almost like a yuppie bar come theme pub with the fittings and the catalogue seating. Don’t let that put you off however. Wandering further in there is a little room wiith a glass front containing many bottled treats from mainly Belgium but quite a few other countries too. Not sure how much good this well lit room does for the beer however. The typical friendly northern service was carried out efficiently by staff who seemed reasonably well informed. Good selection of English guests on tap plus bottles like Cantillon Rose de Gambrinus, Schlenkerla Marzen, Anchor Porter, a few De Dolle, St. Bernardus etc etc. Surprisingly good selection given it’s location and appearance but more than welcomed. The ambience rate is probably not too representative as we went on a Monday night and I gave the food an N/A as we didn’t eat and it would be unfair to make a guess. Overall we had a good night. | | Gethinbeer (65), Nova Scotia | | April 27, 2006 The Devonshire Cat is an excellent beer pub. The variety of ales on offer is excellent. British beers and European beers are available. The place is big and has a good atmosphere. Location is near the skate park, left after the Forum. | | haddonsman (56), Derby, England | | March 1, 2006 Smart looking bar a few minutes walk from the main drag. Glass fronted, lots of pine, one large open plan room. 7 guests and 5 regular cask beers (inc. Devonshire Cat Bitter and Pale Rider from Kelham Island), around 100 bottles; half Belgian, some German/US, seasonal guest bottles as well. 6+ continental draft beers, ciders from Saxon. Good food albeit a little on the pricey side. Always worth a visit for the bottles when doing a Sheffield crawl, couple of minutes walk from West Street tram stop. |
