| swoopjones (115), Buffalo, New York | | October 12, 2009 Nice place. Lots of taps. Decent botlle selction including Belgians. Kelham Brewery right next door. Comfortable place with real nice outdoor beer garden. Look this one up if youre in the area | | Nightfall (26), Athens, Greece | | August 21, 2009 [RBESG 2009] Quick visit for some ticks with Charlotte, Jan and Craig. good selection, some bottles too. Nice ambiance and place. | | SilkTork (58), Rochester, England | | August 7, 2008 Pub with considerable charm and character. Two small rooms with a passage to the side yard beer garden with plenty of red brick and greenery - a bit narrow, but OK. About 10 casks, including Kelham Island’s own. A very decent place - relaxed, friendly, bohemian and quirky. There are cat images everywhere.
I liked it here. The area is very run down - a broken industrial wasteland - but the pub has a sense of solidness and history about it that is quite appealing.
There is not a lot to differentiate between this place and the KIT around the corner. Some people will like them equally, and some will like one over the other. My preference was for this one, but it’s not that huge a preference, and that could change on a visit on a different day. | | evilempire (14), sheffield, England | | March 7, 2008 [ Updated September 29, 2008 ] atmospheric, traditional alehouse, serving half a dozen KI beers and a similar number of guests, as well as a couple of foreign draught beers, and probably Sheffield’s best (though not biggest) range of foreign bottles. Filling & reasonably priced food. Sociable cat (if she decides she likes you!) | | Rastacouere (475), Montréal, Quebec | | August 26, 2007 A great pub with of course quite a few Kelham Island beers, but also a solid guest ales range. Very welcoming beer garden. I could have stayed there hours, I’d consider it possibly one of my 5 favourite in the country in that regard. Friendly service, nice atmosphere and good selection. Everything you want really. A must. | | DJMonarch (83), Northwich, England | | August 11, 2007 My first experience of the Sheffield circuit along with the Cask & Cutler (now the Wellington) Has had many good festivals with the beers often being served from the brick outhouse which keeps the beers nice and cool. Not as many festivals or varied beer range as when I first started going here but still worth a look in. Another nice beer garden similar to the Kelham Island Tavern, lots of flora and fauna in evidence. | | Gazza (136), Worcester, England | | September 6, 2006 The "cat" has been brewing since the late 80s and at one time was Sheffield’s only decent free house although it’s no longer strictly a brewpub as the brewery has now moved to a new building in the adjacent car park. Unfortunately, the cat seems to be slipping down the scooper’s list of favourites as the beer range is becoming steadily more uninteresting and festivals comprising of 12 Kelham beers with various additives. Here’s to the hope it will regain it’s old form; the pub is certainly one of the most atmospheric around. Does a good line in veggie food and a selection of commoner Foreign beers. Brian’s cellar runs for the "scooper’s xmas party" are sadly but a memory. | | Gethinbeer (65), Nova Scotia | | April 27, 2006 Very small place, but has excellent selection of beers. Local beers are cheap and in excellent condition, right next to the brewery. The location is outside of the city centre down torwards the old steel production area of the city. Must visit this pub when in Sheffield. | | haddonsman (56), Derby, England | | March 1, 2006 One of Sheffield’s Shalesmoor holy trinity along with the Kelham Island Tavern and the Cask & Cutler. Small pub next door to Kelham Island brewery, features several of their regular and special beers. Plenty of Belgian bottles, proper cider. Good menu includes highly regarded vegetarian food, HUGE rolls available at lunchtime.
Can be a bit of a squeeze as it’s a popular place but it’s a must-visit pub if you’re in the city. About ten minutes from the city centre on the tram, get off at the Shalesmoor stop. |
