9 reviews for Kelham Island Tavern
| Nightfall (26), Athens, Greece | | August 21, 2009 [RBESG 2009]. Nice selection of casks, friendly people. didn’t have a chance to see the garden as it was raining (what a surprise :D ). | | bierkoning (173), La Tropica, Netherlands | | July 28, 2009 [ Updated July 29, 2009 ] Good range of cask ales. Small and packed with people, but I had a pleasant time. | | Borresteijn (52), Amsterdam, Netherlands | | July 23, 2009 Visited during RBESG 09. Bright bar, I only visited the front side, which was packed and a bit small, but cozy if you manage to get a seat. Based on older reviews I should have visited the beer garden, unfortunately the heavens decided to open up that day. Nice selection although not the largest of what I’ve seen in Sheffield. | | SilkTork (57), Rochester, England | | August 7, 2008 The guys behind the bar at KIT are warm, friendly and witty, creating a nice club feel. The food is stunning value - very tasty and very cheap with veggie options - though service can be very very very slow if more than a few people want food.
There is a main room at the front with the bar - it’s not very big, but it’s an OK space. There’s the back room, which is simply functional - a few tables and chairs. It’s the space between the main bar and the beer garden, and it’s OK for eating food. And there’s a pleasant beer garden.
The beer range is the big draw here. The pub itself, while being pleasant enough, is nothing special - and the location is quite dire in the beaten up, weed infested, industrial dump of Kelham Island. But the beer range is very good, and that pulls in the groups of tickers and scoopers who create a clubby atmosphere.
The down to earth, humble surroundings seem to suit the scoopers. Most scoopers pubs tend to be plain and simple like the Market Porter - the less pretension the better.
I like this place. I’d like it to be on my door step. I’d rave about it a bit more if it was on my door step.
But I guess I’m going to nit-pick about the lack of charm and character, and the poor surroundings - maybe because I’m a little bit jealous.
If you’re in Sheffield this is one of the pubs to visit - it’s fame extends to the furthest corner of Britain, and it has frequently been acclaimed by the local CAMRA branches as the best pub in the area.
I preferred the Fat Cat, the Bath Hotel and the University Arms, and there are other pubs I’ve yet to see in Sheffield, but I can see why people like it, even if it isn’t a big hit for me. | | evilempire (14), sheffield, England | | February 22, 2008 absolutely top pub, all the essential ingredients - a wide (12 handpumps) range of beers, mostly from micros, decent, cheap and filling food, great atmosphere, and a friendly cat. possibly the best range of beers in Sheffield (no easy task!), all well kept. well kept garden if that’s the sort of thing you’re into. | | Rastacouere (475), Montréal, Quebec | | August 26, 2007 An absolutely stunning pub, welcoming and bustling with life even with 5-6 people in. Superb terrace, one of the nicest I’ve seen, lots of flowers and the classic lazy brewer’s cat. Efficient landlord. One of my favourite spots in the country and the beer selection is as good as it gets really, lots of small breweries represented. Absolute must. | | DJMonarch (83), Northwich, England | | August 11, 2007 Visited here for one of their festivals in July when they picked up their pub of the year award for something like the 4th year running which is no mean feat in Sheffield. Sadly just after their moment of glory the floods hit Sheffield but this place is now back up and running again so I must pay another visit soon. Good selection of new and rarer beers from small micros and they do very well with the food. Lovely beer garden outside if the weather’s good. | | Gazza (136), Worcester, England | | September 6, 2006 [ Updated August 12, 2007 ] A relative newcomer to the world of scooping, this pub is only about 50 yards from the famous Fat Cat in the Kelham Island area. For years it was a dodgy-looking local selling keg beers then, unsurprisingly, it closed and many people thought that was that and, to hammer the nails firmly into the coffin, when the area started to become a red-light zone that seemed to seal the fate of the "KIT". Amazingly, it was surprisingly reopened in 2002 and has gone from strength to strength, attracting many of the Fat Cat’s customers with an excellent selection of beers and good atmosphere. Many people, scoopers included, now rate the "KIT" over the "Cat". | | haddonsman (56), Derby, England | | March 1, 2006 Lovely littlle pub that’s a staple on the Sheffield circuit. Ten casks on, house beer is Acorn Barnsley Bitter. Three cask ciders. St Loius Kriek, Warsteiner and Konig Ludwig Weiss on draught.
Simple, filling lunchtime food (like pie and mash), non-smoking room to rear, another busy pub even at weekday lunchtimes but well worth the trip. Just round the corner from the Fat Cat and a few minutes walk from the Shalesmoor tram stop and the Cask & Cutler. |
