Accidently found this place calling to us after we tried to get into Cumberland Brews and Graceland Brewing Company, both of which were closed before 4 on a Monday. Around the corner from GBC, this one had a gigantic ’OPEN’ sign and completley free parking out front. Very neat interior, lots of brewing related artwork and copper kettles and brewing equipment proudly on display behind glass behind the bar. The waiter was extremely knowledgeable, attentive, and very funny/friendly. He helped us with all our questions, helped us find our way out of town afterwards, and was class all the way. Can’t speak for the food, but the sampler was a great deal. All nine available beers in 3 oz. samplers for $5.50. Haven’t been able to find better than that.

(Visited 7-14-08) The wife and I went to downtown Louisville for a day and stumbled upon this place for lunch. Brewpub itself looked very nice. The server was a little lax, but that just met more time for us to cause trouble. Food- pricey and not all that great. Who’s bright idea was it to put chipotle sauce and potato skins together?- ugh! Brews- 6 in house with 2 guest taps. Thought that they would have more selection than that but oh well. Most were run of the mill IMHO and at one dollar per sample- OUCH! Overall- ok place to visit, but I wouldn’t be holding my breath to see if I go back anytime soon.

Stopped in for lunch and a sampler and left pretty happy. Food was decent, and I’m a sucker for those homemade potato chips so it was nice to have some of those. Right at the Louisville minor league stadium, so I did a little walk through to see some of old ballplayers from recent days and yesteryear that played there. Staff was friendly, beer was decent enough though they were a little low on choices the day I was there. Pretty empty in there on a non game day at lunch time, I imagine it gets packed on game day. Nice wall décor too with pictures of beer ingredients.

Cool brewpub in the middle of the city. Nice restaurant (I forget what I got but it was good). They have quite a few kegs going at once with plenty of styles to please everyone. Their house brew is pretty damn good I had a she-devil IIPA and a porter. The place looks great and the service is very friendly and knowledgeable. The owner also cruses the place often and is more than willing to sit and chat. Check it out.

I love Browning’s. The food is fantastic, considering it comes out of the same kitchen as the four star restaurant next door. The beer, however, is the draw. While most people try the She-Devil and the Bourbon Barrel, it is in all of the other styles that they shine. Their Helles, Pale Ale and Porter are all favorites of mine. Honestly, I think Brian, the brewmaster here, is making the best beer in town.

This is a pretty cool brewpub attached to the minor league baseball stadium downtown. I visited on a Tuesday afternoon in November, and unfortunately it was election day, so they couldn’t serve any alcohol until the polls closed (a state law in Kentucky & Indiana, as I found out that day). They had 7 house beers on tap the day I visited. I still decided to have lunch, which was good. Must be a lot of fun on game days and non-election days. I just tried a bottle of the She-Devil imperial pale ale, and was impressed.

Great place to stop in before heading to a Bat’s game, where you will get nothing than what the local Bud distributor carries. Nice cozy atmosphere with plenty of televisions, ample seating inside and out, and a great looking wooden bar that looks like one of those masterpieces out of an English Pub. Above the bar you can see the brewing facilities. Brian Reymiller, their current brewer does a great job with seasonals and new beers that he has added to their inventory. The She Devil is an awesome IPA, and the Bourbon Barrel Stout is very well put together. I’ve never been charged for a sample like the previous rater, so I’m not sure if he had an uninformed server or the policy has changed. A great spot for Louisville beer drinkers.

Brownings has potential. And they have a very good selection of beer and the food is very nice too. But for a brewery to charge for a small sample of their beer I think is pretty grubby and left a bad taste in my mouth. They don’t do that at the BBC which I frequent more often.

4/9/07--My son and I toured the Louisville Slugger factory on Main St. and decided to trek the 10 block walk to the Brewery. It was well worth the walk. Not a lot of people there at 2pm on a Monday. I had the sampler platter of microbrews. The St. Hildegard Helles was wonderful--a great way to start sampling. I won’t run through all of the offerings, but by far, the stand-out was their Bourbon Barrel Stout--very complex with essence of vanilla, chocolate and a rich bourbon overtone. It would be hard to finish off any more than a pint--too much of a good thing. They don’t tour the brewery, and the Brewmaster was not there at the time. The food was terrific (I had the Cuban sandwich and my son had the Brownings Burger) and both were $9 each--they come with fries/homemade kettle chips and red cabbage cole slaw. I highly recommend Brownings.
