| Travlr (637), Washington, Washington DC | | February 19, 2012 Very quiet and ghost-town- like on a lazy Sunday afternoon with Nax’s festival goin on nearby. Which was fine with me, cause the staff had time to vhat about the beerx, and didn’t mind mixing and matching the flights. Great atmosphere, killer music. Water arrived without asking. Burgers are incredible. | BeerThursdays (5), Delaware does not count - explanation | | February 8, 2012 Great beer bar in the city. Not Max’s, but that’s awesome IMHO. Lots of great beer, and not horribly priced. Food is pretty good, and I dig the atmosphere. I’ll be back! | | Drink4Satan (28), Washington, Washington DC | | November 14, 2011 One of the best beer bars in the mid-atlantic region, imo. Visited on a Sunday night by myself because my friends are lame. Immediately appreciated the classic brasserie decor with high, tiled ceilings, tile floors and dark wood bar. Large glass windows nearly span from the ceiling to the floor. Comfortable shaped bar stools and good bar height. The draft list was well selected and had an emphasis on farmhouse and Belgian-inspired ales, if not Belgian themselves. There were three sour offerings on draft, which is always appreciated. Interesting menu. I ordered the Catfish taco’s and the temp, texture and balance of crisp and savory flavors was spot on. Bartender was super-friendly and seemed passionate about her beers. I was given 6 samples upon asking, "what’s rare and dank tonight?" Great music was played the entire time I was there. Not a single irritating poppy song was played. A lot of shoegaze and mellow dramatic alt rock was played. Some of the bottles were unreasonably priced, while others were a steal! I have no explanation for that, but whatever, the drafts were still affordable for the region and rarity of the offerings. I will absolutely return here, most likely within the next couple weeks and I live an hour away in Frederick! | | MrChopin (89), Baltimore, Maryland | | November 6, 2011 Large place, dark wood with high ceilings gives off castle hall feel. Tap list is large but unimpressive, standard Belgians and Americans. Like a craft beer for hipsters spot, very little personality, even from the staff. | | JCB (120), Durham, North Carolina | | October 22, 2011 Pretty cool pub near the harbor. First thing I noticed was how nicely preserved some of the building’s original features are, including some attractive stained glass, a couple of vast mirrors, and really handsome wood settings. Moderate crowd on a Saturday afternoon, inobtrusive TVs, and a relaxed feel overall (especially when compared with the zoo that is Max’s on a weekend). Decent pub grub on the menu, including a nice smoked burger that went down well. And about 40 taps and a pretty decent bottle list. Prices were quite good. For example, a 750 of Scharbeekse was only about $5 more than it usually is off the shelf. Tons of stuff from Troegs, Heavy Seas, Victory, but also 21st Amendment, Stone, and a few good Belgians like Troubador. Overall, a good stop if you’re in town. | | Pivoyager (63), Gaithersburg, Maryland | | September 14, 2011 Alewife is Baltimore’s newest purveyor of craft ales. Proudly situated opposite the Hippodrome Theater in an imposing building that was once the Eutaw Savings Bank (the vault is still here), it offers Charm City beer lovers another opportunity to quaff great brews accompanied by some very eclectic cuisine, one item being Belgian-style fries cooked in duck fat
As previously noted, Alewife offers their customers about 40 taps to accompany a well chosen bottle list, which represents several of the great Beer Countries (i.e., Belgium and Germany). Several of the bottles are a bit pricey - such as De Ranke Golden Ale for $26.00. (Ouch!) During my visit, on a quiet Saturday afternoon, I had the opportunity to quaff the following: Loose Cannon IPA, Boulder Mojo, Evolution IPA and O’Hara Dry Stout. I could not help but notice that a good portion of Alewife’s draft list favored hoppy beers. But, who’s complaining? Not I.
| | handsomejn (31), Arkansas | | August 22, 2011 Forty beers on tap, no crap on tap. Awesome burger. Great service. | | hoosiers1994 (20), Maryland | | March 25, 2011 Visited for the Stone Beer fest..in Oct. Great food, great beer, service was also good. I need to go back, but based on this experience, it was great. | | Plank10 (10), Maryland | | January 26, 2011 Better than average selection but terrible service. Also the food sounded great but was cold and combined with bad service made for an unhappy trip. Great beer but more expensive than Max’s without the great service. As is not worth the trip since there are better beer bars in Baltimore. If the service and food were better this would be way higher. | | flyer50 (42), Seattle, Washington | | October 31, 2010 A great place in Baltimore for beer. I was there for the tail end of the 40 Stones on tap fest. Enjoyed the 4 year vertical taste of Epic!
Kitchen was open until last call. Had excellent fries cooked in duck fat!
Was there on a quiet Thursday night- last call at 1130pm! Also loud rap music blaring cost a couple of ambiance points. This place is worth a stop if you are staying/visiting the Inner Harbor. |
