| Arve_Christian (68), Oslo, Norway | | March 10, 2012 A german style brauhaus with a view of the Bund. It was good with some dark beer, after mostly light Chinese beers | | Camons (67), Hasselager, Denmark | | January 15, 2012 Brewgarden across the river from the Bund. View was fantastic even on grey raining january day. Sadly this was the best part of the visit, slow service, watered down beers compared to the german originals. Very pricy, but thats is proberly coming with the location. Didnt eat. | ravidesai (1), Bombay , India does not count - explanation | | October 17, 2011 A couple of locations in Shanghai. The pudong location opposite the bund can be very pleasant. great view. xintiandi is rather plastic.
beers are decent - .not very flavorful but a nice change from tsingtao.
they have a lager ( bland) , dunkel and hefeweisen. seasonals such as octoberfest as well.
pricing is quite high. 75 CNY ( us$10) for a glass, popular with expas and tourits.
nice for a way to end an evening out in pudomg. | | kosherbeer (28), gudvangen, Norway | | April 25, 2010 good food ,beer not bad at all ,the pudong brauhaus the best of the three,,,quite fresh and tasty weizen | | Beershine (540), The Sunshine State, Florida | | January 28, 2010 There are several Paulaners in Shanghai, we went to the Fenyang Lu. Had a live blues-rock band, good musicians but cruise ship vibe, playing only covers. Loud and boisterous crowd on the weekend was fun. The prices are outrageous, more expensive than germany. Food mediocre. Beer mediocre at best, not as good as it should be. I’d stick to Boxing Cat if I were in Shanghai again. | | raymondwave (26), , Finland | | July 28, 2008 Visited the one on Pudong facing the Bund. I would say one of the best views from a biergarten I’ve seen. Totally packed on a friday evening, had to wait for a table, but it was worth it. All beers are german quality, the indoor restaurant is very authentic for all senses. Pretzels were a bit too crispy. Be prepared for mosquitos on a summer evening if staying outdoors. | MrOldStyle (2), Wisconsin does not count - explanation | | April 19, 2006 [ Updated April 25, 2006 ] I’m surprised at the 12/31/05 rating. The address listed is not in Xintiandi so the rater is confused. There are three (3) Paulaners in Shanghai The one on FengYang Rd is the main location and there is one in Xintialdi, and Pudong (near Pearl Tower)...
I have enjoyed the beer in all three and found the food to be as close to real German as I could expect. I have certainly eaten worse in Europe as well as the US. The Beer is fresh and quite good - As far as selection, they only serve their own "Brewpub" selection, not the mass manufactured variety.
They Claim that the beer is the same recipie as Munich but not filtered. | | larsga (136), Oslo, Norway | | December 30, 2005 A bizarre place, situated in the middle of Xintiandi, an old-yet-modern-looking newly developed entertainment area. It’s a heavily themed Paulaner, well, kind of a nightclub, I guess. It’s got a Filipino pseudo-lounge-jazz band, Chinese waiters in traditional dirndl clothing, a stall selling German sausages and cookies, etc The interior is kind of up-scale (not just by Shanghai standards, but also by western standards). The beer selection is very poor, however. They serve some lagers, plus a couple of Paulaner weissbiers. The one I had looked right, but had no aroma, and hardly any taste. I complained, but the waiter couldn’t understand what the problem could possibly be. It was brewed in Shanghai, he said, under the oversight of a German engineer. I take it this means that they removed the taste on purpose, to fit the Chinese palate. (The Chinese seem to consume fantastic amounts of tasteless lager.) |
