| Beerman6686 (24), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | | May 17, 2012 very cool place in lawrenceville. Civil war themed and deck out appropriately. usually have 5-7 ciders or meads on tap, all of which ive had were great. the couple running the place is very nice and are willing to discuss all kinds of stuff. Only drawback is the price as some of these are pretty expensive. | | Foam (13), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | | March 29, 2012 Great and I mean great hard ciders made locally in PGH. but very expensive, unfortunately ... they seem to be expanding their distribution to various bars around PGH and even into Ohio, apparently which, is good. Wonder how long til someone else opens a cidery around PGh and doesn’t charge so much ?!! | | cheapdark (128), Quiptown & Central Valley, Pennsylvania | | May 13, 2011 [ Updated May 16, 2011 ] This was a gem in the rough. Very pleasant welcoming cider bar off penn avenue. Easy parking on side of street. Tap handles are civil war guns, bones and hands holding fruit. Bill, the brewer is a really fine fellow and his wife is welcoming. The bar is about 5 foot wide and they don’t sell food. This was a really nice cider tasting experience. If you stop by ask to taste the cider sorbet, fantastic. Also they brew a sour cherry cider that rivals lambics, make sure you ask to taste that as well. I was very happy to stop here! The bartendees sure do have a lot of knowledge about the civil war vets burried nearby in allegheny cemetary. Bill knows all about making good tasting cider! | | Acetobacter (46), Pennsylvania | | November 28, 2010 Visited on a Saturday afternoon. The establishment is located on the first floor of a home across the street from what was once the Allegheny Arsenal, hence the name. We were greeted by the co-owner, and wife of the cider maker. We were immediately offered samples of the cider house’s products, and we given nice descriptions of what we were trying. The owner was happy to answer our questions about their processes and products, and made us feel quite welcome. The ambiance of the business has been made to reflect a civil war-era room. Attractive hardwood floors, period tools and equipment, period music, and several other items complete the illusion. The products were generally quite good, and very reasonably priced for sale in growlers, either provided by the business, or brought by customers. Overall, an out-of-the-ordinary business that skirts the line between wine and cider, and is absolutely worth visiting. |
