ICEatALAMO (8), Troy, Michigan does not count - explanation | | January 18, 2012 A little disappointed after hearing so much about this place. It started off bad when I ordered a Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout on draft. It came out ice cold, not what I was expecting. Their selection was ok, but I was expecting a better rotation of taps. The food was average, with having to send some stuff back because it was very cold. The service was ok, as several people in our party had empty glasses for far too long. Cool college town bar though with a better selection than most. | | msante79 (227), Mount Prospect, Illinois | | December 6, 2011 Stopped in on a rainy Sunday to catch the Bears game while in town on business. Place was mostly empty which was nice surprise. Deaftones playing on the jukebox. Bartender and fellow patrons were friendly and buffalo wrap I had was tasty. Found a rare Shorts wrap on tap and a couple of other tasty brews on tap. Kind a cross between an old college bar and beer destination. Best bar I have been to in Michigan and will try to make it back in before I leave town. Seems like they have quite a few beer events too. | | RudiNicole (73), Michigan | | September 10, 2011 Really cool place, kind of small and cramped inside, but it is still a cool environment. Parking sucks because it is right on campus, so I don’t see myself visiting much during the school year. Really great tap selection, and had some specials for IPA day which I took advantage of. Friendly staff. Will be back, but most likely during the summer months. | | paintedmaple (36), Fenton, Michigan | | July 4, 2011 Huge eclectic beer selection and the Stilton fries are the best pub grub ever. | | KPD (49), Michigan | | June 28, 2011 [ Updated September 25, 2011 ] Great selection, food has some good choices, and has improved lately and added to typical bar food choices. Go between May and September so you can get seats. Service is decent, a really good watering hole in Ann Arbor. | | amg800 (38), Ada, Michigan | | June 20, 2011 My first time was on quiz night, what a great tradition. I love it when places do this. Always fun. Service was pretty bad, our server was no where to be found most of the time we were there. | | jrallen34 (201), Chicago, Illinois | | March 31, 2011 In Ann Arbor to check out the beer scene and despite the many brew pubs this is the best place to head by far, however, it totally has its downsides. First of all we were there two consecutive nights and it was just way to crowded, I can’t imagine it when school is in session. The atmosphere was nothing special at all, almost down right boring...The quality and selection of beer was pretty good. They have something like 70 taps and a couple hundred bottles which is impressive, but almost too overwhelming. The taps were of decent quality and lot of local stuff, but also a lot of easy to find bs that really shouldn’t be there. They did have dragonsmeade and Kuhnhenn, which is really nice. The bottle list was nothing great, I didn’t see anything I had to get. Now I am being pretty picky, this place has nice beer that anyone can find something good to drink.
My real problem with this place comes down to the service, again two nights at least four different bartenders who didn’t know jack about beer. We constantly asked them for suggestions and they always kept offering us easy to find crap. Me and my friend told them each, hey we’ve had a ton of stuff, show me something good and local. The first clown goes why don’t you try a delirium tremens, we say no, then he goes how about a delirium nocturnum? REALLY GUY? REALLY?
So basically, get better service, offer a little higher standard on taps and this place could be world class. | RinkuKokiri (1), does not count - explanation | | July 30, 2010 Their basement on Thursday nights is my new favorite place in Ann Arbor.
Not only can I sip my favorite Pale Ale, but whilst listening to LIVE dubstep :D Truly amazing place! | | MikeF (205), Cleveland, Ohio | | July 7, 2010 This should be considered one of the top beer bars in the country. They have a VERY good regional selection including drafts from arcadia, bells, dark horse, shorts and even Kuhnhenn. I counted more than 70 taps. They also have a good variety of solid belgian beers on draft. The help seemed somewhat aloof, but adequate. They have a nice old english pub theme. I would imaging this place gets crazy when school is in session which may be it’s Achilles heal. | | revoke (12), Michigan | | April 30, 2010 Best beer selection in Ann Arbor... BUT good luck getting served. They have this strange rule in which you must be either at an upstairs table, or sitting at the bar in order to be able to order the "good" beer. Occasionally the basement bar opens, but only cheap frat-party beer flows down there. This bar is always crowded, the best times to go are off hours, or in the summer when the students are not there. If you like beer, it’s worth the trouble. Their food prices are reasonable and they have the Ashley’s Ann Arbor original Stilton fries (an acquired taste). It’s ambiance is great on the main floor (it just screams "I’m a beer pub dammit!"). Unfortunately, its proximity to main campus really kills its buzz (it’s the only beer-bar over in this area, and as such it just gets too crowded). For a beer tour, start here early and work your way to Main Street. |
