Visited in August 2016, probably the only place to go in Bucharest, even if nothing special

If you’re in Bucharest and love beer, there aren’t too many places for you to go. We are talking about a country which is renowned for wine-making and wine-drinking (especially). Few Romanians can grasp the basic difference between lager and ale. Thus, you shouldn’t be too harsh on Beer O’Clock. There are two Beer O’Clock pubs in Bucharest – the one on Gabroveni Street, in the heart of the Old City Center, being the main venue. Ambiance - 16 of March is VE Day for all non-smokers. All bars and restaurants in Romania will be turning into non-smoking heavens. Beer O’Clock will be no exception. The music is good, the lighting and décor are perfect for sipping beer. If you’re looking for a quieter, darker place, you should try the venue in the Villaccrosse walkway. Service - Bartenders are always nice, always helpful, always chatty. Service is swift even on busy nights. Beer is served in suitable glasses, from tankards to goblets. Of course, all bottles are popped in front of you and even the feistiest beers are correctly poured. Not once in five years have I received a spoiled one, but, rest assured, if you’re that unlucky, it won’t be on your tab. Selection - Here’s the pickle! Remember when I told you that we’re in Romania. Romanians love beer, but the wrong kind! The market is flooded with inexpensive, gutter-quality local brews. This being said, though Beer O’Clock is packed even on most week nights, they cannot afford a stellar selection whilst keeping the prices down. Don’t get me wrong, you’ll find good IPAs and Porters, a few Belgians, and a few very special ones depending on your price range. I wouldn’t go as far as labeling their selection as meager, but it ain’t no Blue Monk. Food - They’ve got a killer nut-mix and good biltong, but that’s about it. The upside is that they allow (and sometimes encourage if they see that you’ve had a little bit too much) food from the outside. Fast foods are located all around this place, so you could always walk in with a pizza or a kebab. Value - Beer O’Clock has made a name for itself in Bucharest. And one of the reasons for that is its relatively inexpensive menu. You can most certainly have a few good ones without making much of a dent in your savings account. Overall - I’ll rate it at about 75 to 80 because of its great service, nice atmosphere and good value. In Bucharest, Beer O’Clock is as good as you’re gonna get. Lastly, don’t be shy, you’ll probably find me at the bar sipping St. Bernardus Abt. Cheers!

Lies, lies and damn lies. Forget the 160 bottles the fridges are holding, very few of the beers that they advertise are available. Even the craft Romanian’s they say they stock (still advertised on today’s board) are only half available. Thought the red dots that are against certain beers in the very nicely presented beer menu indicated non-availability, but they seem to highlight beers that they both have and do not have. It’s just a bit of a mess. OK , so I’m a non-smoker, and I have managed to acclimatise myself to the smoke that fills the berarias of this country, but really?, the barman smoking whilst pouring the drinks?, come on. Went for the Ground Zero local beers, all advetised, still advertised on the board, only 2 available. Disappointing.

Great place for selecting a beer from around Europe or Romania. The prices are very good by Western standards, and reasonable overall. Service has some beer knowledge, and recommended a good beer. The selection is quite good for any part of the world. Nothing special about the ambiance, but not a bad place for a beer by any means. Did not try the food on my first visit, but planning to return during my time in Bucharest.

One of the best places in Bucharest. In the middle of the old town. Good service and prices.

Comfortable bar with the best selection I found in Bucharest. Service is surly at best, but not much different than elsewhere in town. Green Devil on tap was either a little old or a little dirty (or both). Switched to a bottle of Citra from the same brewery which was lovely. Prices typical for a tourist zone, but low compared to Western Europe - 15 lei for a pint.

Located in the vibrant part of Bucharest’s charming old town, it has a few taps and lots of bottles. Nice interior, though service was slightly dodgy, at least when compared to Beer O’Clock 1. You can’t miss it in summer, as it’s visible by the huge Delirium Tremens umbrellas outside. And if you’re thirsty you’ll be leaving with a delirium as well. Recommended.

I wish this place opened earlier on Saturday; it would have bought me a lot more time there. Smallish place, not crowded at five on Saturday. Bartender spoke English and had decent beer knowledge. They had three taps dedicated to a new Bucharest microbrewery (Ground Zero) while I was there, including the first Romanian IPA. Not half bad for a first effort. Service was good, place was not too smoky (mainly cause it was not too busy). They had a bunch of interesting bottles that would have like to stick around for, but family calls. For Romania, this place basically rocks.
