This place is much more a bar than a beer store. Visited on Sat afternoon ,place was packed, great atmosphere. Nice tap selection, large bottle selection but mostly large bottles. This is great if you live around, but a problem if you need to carry back home in your luggage... location is far from center but itís worth the visit.

This small spot is awesome, from the hole-in-the-wall atmosphere to the service, to the selection, and the prices. Itís none of what I dislike about San Francisco with everything I do like, and itís right in the heart of the city. The draft list isnít enormous, but itís damn good, and the bottle list is outstanding. Iím very happy I stopped by, and encourage others to do the same.

A bottle shop with a bar and places to sit down! Why the hell canít I find a place like this in New England??? The place can get load because it is in the basement of a building but I forgive them for that. They had a decent selection of bottles which even included a cooler with cellared brews. A trend for California beer trip was stopping in at places during off hours, this was no exception. I could see this place getting overly packed because of the limited space. Side note** it is not a far walk from the closest BART station, so it really should be a stop if you are visiting San Fran.

Popped in for takeaway.
Really nice bottleshop, that has a bar incorporated. Selection is good, and the staff is very friendly! Will definitely come if I am ever in San Fransisco again.

This was this first beer store to introduce me to sour beer. That first 750 ml bottle of sanctification got me hooked. Now that they have expanded and have a bar area, they are pretty much unbeatable if you want a bar/bottle shop experience in San Francisco. Great selection. Kind, thoughtful service. I am forever indebted to Craig for introducing me to Russian River about 6 years ago.

City Beer Store is located on Folsom Street in downtown San Francisco, a couple blocks away from Cellarmaker. Street parking is available in the surrounding blocks, but availability is probably a challenge at certain times of day.
Upon entering, a short staircase leads down to a space that is divided between a store and a bar. The store is on the left side, with a row of coolers along the wall and shelves occupying the rest of the available space (which is not a lot). On the right is a curved bar with a few stools and a couple high top tables. Very DYI motif, with a signboard listing the beers on tap. There is a cooler of rarer beers behind the bar as well.
There are around 15 beers on tap at City Beer, including many CA breweries like Heretic, Rare Barrel, Coronado and Alpine. The bottled selection numbers in the hundreds, again with many vintage and rare beers from Bruery, Goose Island, Logsdon, Almanac, Cascade and many others.
Service on an early weekday afternoon both at the bar and in the store was good. The staff are all well-versed in the beer selection and was very helpful in selecting beers on draught and to take home.
I did not have any food during my visit.
Overall this is a worthwhile bar/store. I always like the option of buying a pint and carrying it around while I shop, and/or buying a bottle to drink in a cool bar. Definitely a must stop in San Fran.
