Hipster friendly with loud lounge/whatever music, no too confusing beers and fancy decor.
I think they had something like six of their own beers on tap when I went there and three or four guest beers, with one being quite good. The beers are not worth traveling for, but the place is nice enough, big and spacious with tables and benches inside and outdoor seating next to a canal, so easy to see why locals would go there to hang out when the weather is good. They make pretty good pizzas as well and the kitchen was quite busy, but waiting really doesn’t matter much when you can buy beer. They also had a small pop up cocktail bar outside, which was not open at the time of my visit. Service was good and friendly and getting there is only a short walk from Hackney Wick overground.

Visited during the RBESG ’14, day 3, 09/08/14.
Great canal side location, 5 mins walk from Hackney Wick station (Overground), Crate is located inside an old warehouse and occupies the ground floor with a decent sized patio by the canal.
The place was packed during our lunchtime visit but service at the bar was prompt and friendly.
Beer range was 4 or 5 from their own stable, solid if not spectacular, supplemented with a couple or three guests.
Food is largely in the way of tasty home made pizza.
In all a great location and good vibes.
Beer range is a little pedestrian but well worth popping by an an Overground pub crawl.

Nice big industrial building. Plenty of seating inside and out. Good service, good prices, good beer and good pizza. What else do you need. A nice stop during RBESG.

A stunning and trendy location full of Eco friendly young urbanites. Lots of room and a large patio, this even sports a unisex bathroom of sorts. Service was good and friendly, food was upscale nice pizza. Their own beer plus some guest taps make this well rounded for a place to visit. Their beer is a bit boring, so go for food and atmosphere.

Pretty cool place if rather hipsterish and in an out of the way location. House beers are nice enough and the Nogne stuff on focus on my visit obviously awesome. Pizzas have unusual toppings and aren’t bad.

Very interesting location. Very ’East London-y’ and trendy. You have to walk through a pretty grim graffiti walled area to get to the location. I went on a sunny day so it was pretty busy. The beers are nothing special really and there weren’t any guest beers. But the building looks cool and it’s next to the canal. The pizzas looked nice but I didn’t taste one.

Set in a highly industrial area and also beside the canal, this modern-looking brewpub presents an interesting contrast to its surroundings. Crate offers a decent but limited range of house beers; on my visit they had, in bottle or on cask or keg, a lager, a bitter, a golden ale, an IPA and a stout - and, as far as I know, that’s pretty much the entire range of beers they’ve made since their inception. The house beers aren’t bad, but neither are they adventurous and exciting. The venue itself is quite attractive. The interior I would describe as industrial chic. Outside there are a few picnic tables, from which you can sit and watch the canal. On my Saturday afternoon visit there were quite a few families here, almost all of them enjoying pizzas - Crate offers a dynamic range of pizzas, which look very good (I didn’t eat on my visit). The staff is friendly and one of the guys spoke to me at length about their house beer. Aside from the Crate beers, the bar offers a solid range of guest breweries, both on tap and in bottle. Not a must-visit spot on the London circuit, but if you’re doing an Overground pub crawl this should absolutely be a stop - Crate is located less than five minutes away (walking) from the Hackney Wick Overground station.
