| altonbrownd (146), Brussels, Belgium | | May 15, 2012 Just a normal Amsterdam cafe with nothing unusual on offer. Ripe for deletion. | | Dorqui (103), Brescia, Italy | | October 3, 2011 Unusual and " dark" pub. Inner much old, not much cured cleansing, a lot " old-style" with furnishing in wood and little space. Modest chosen of bottled beers, interesting blackboard with written by hand the name of some seasonal beers. Desert when I have gone. Kind staff. Food not tried. | | chriso (258), London, England | | May 11, 2011 Amsterdam seems to have a fair few small bars situated in narrow streets / alleyways just a few steps off a busy shopping street but seeming a million miles away. This one is between Kalverstraat and the cloistered tranquility of the Begijnhof. Not only does it seem far from the bustle of Kalverstraat but it’s like stepping back 100 years in time. Very brown, with the usual nictine-stained walls and ceiling. Just a couple of old boys in when I visited mid-afternoon. The oddity here is that there is no bar counter - just an alcove / passageway at the back, from where the server emerges. All very atmospheric and traditional in feel. So far so good but not so beery. But there are beery attractions, even if they are not essential ones. Firstly, they permanently have Van Vollenhoven’s Stout - the Schans recreation that is - supposedly (according to "Around Amsterdam in 80 Beers") on tap and in bottle, but there was no sign of the tap version when I visited. I don’t know whether that was just a temporary outage. There are also about 10 beers on tap and 15 in bottle. A solid enough selection but nothing particularly outlandish, with some of the usual Belgian fare and the chance of a rarity or two. I picked up Texels Skimme and Lingen Blond (unfortunately, for I wasn’t aware what it was when I ordered it). So, not an unmissable beer destination but well worth a visit for a feel of old Amsterdam and a decent beer or two. Not entirely sure of the opening hours - I think they may vary a little from the ones quoted depending on the day of the week. |
