Erzbierschof’s Bar Liebefeld

A little over five years ago, this venue started what is now a network of four bars in four towns in Switzerland. During these five years, this bar and its characteristic owner have made a lasting impression on the Swiss craft beer scene by expanding many of the otherwise narrow Swiss minds. The bar itself sits in a peculiar location below an auto parts store in a suburb of Bern. None of the patrons is there by accident, people go to Erzbierschof for one specific reason: to taste excellent beer. At any given point in time, the selection of 15+2 taps is one of the larger in Switzerland with a couple hundred bottles in fridges for self-service or take away. Prices are reasonable, especially for otherwise hard to get items such as a whole host of De Molens or Belgian fruit lambics. The atmosphere of the bar is usually dialed down. It’s a quiet and cozy spot to appreciate beer with limited space, making it almost an oasis of quality drinking. The staff is very knowledgeable and always helpful. If you could visit only one beer bar in Switzerland, it has to be this Erbzierschof Liebefeld.

Visited for the 5 year anniversary. Located in a quite obscure spot in the suburbs of Bern, this bar offers everything a craft beer lover can ask for. The atmosphere is cozy, the 15 taps, 2 hand pumps and hundreds of bottles contain everything from obscure local stuff to international classics (also Belgian lambics), staff is knowledgeable, prices are good. From the main station of Bern, the bar is reachable within 15 minutes by public transport and a bit of walking, so there’s really no excuse not go to there.

15+ taps, a lot of fridges with beers and a selection that is hard to compete with. Very decent prices. A close to perfect beer advocate to support and enhance beerculture.

Update: Closing down, May 2017. Unbelievable selection of beers. This is (unfortunately soon was, see update) the gold standard for beer bars in Switzerland, deriving its name from a word pun ("Archbeershop"). Don’t miss the place if you happen to be in the Bern area. You can marvel at beers and more beers waiting in many large glass refrigerators - in case you don’t end up ordering one of the 17 different beers on tap first. One tap is reserved for brewer BFM, the rest is changing all the time. The only downside is that the place is a bit hard to find for first-time visitors (but easy to reach from Bern main station, there are two bus lines - number 10 or 17 - with stops nearby as well as a local train station). If you want to learn more about beer and not just drink beer Erzbierschof also offers educational evening events once a month about different beer styles (for beginners) or a particular beer style (sort of an advanced course). Update: There’s now also an Erzbierschof branch in Bern’s old town since early 2015 - Erzbierschof Bar Krone. It features 13 taps but fewer bottles than the Liebefeld location. PS: The owners have also opened two additional Erzbierschof locations in Winterthur and Zurich {near the main station) for beer lovers in the Zurich metropolitan area.
