Zandrsn (1), Ontario does not count - explanation | | May 25, 2012 Great local bottle shop. Way better than it needs to be, and now with 45 growler taps! | | Butters (164), Richmond, Virginia | | May 9, 2012 Totally the best ’hidden gym’ in georgia. Fantastic selection of rare and vintage beers. The store itself has no real ’character’ or ’charm’, But the growler shed beside the store is really sweet and makes up for it quite a bit. it’s just a dumpy package store, so the ambiance score suffers. Average prices for most stuff, but they surprisingly didn’t price gouge on the vintage stuff. The staff was VERY helpful and knowledgable about lots of the brews they carried. And the selection was world class. I will ALWAYS be stopping by here when I am passing through Athens. | | maekchu (11), Hirakata, Japan | | February 28, 2012 The best beer store in Athens, period. And probably one of the best in the SE part of the country. They are always finding new and interesting varieties for their shelves. Great selection of US micros, as well as British and other European, including several I haven’t seen in Atlanta. The Belgian section is expanding; most recently, they’ve added many sour and barrel-aged beers. Staff is friendly and very knowledgeable. In downtown Athens, this is the place to find the best bottled beer available. They also have a growler sales building next door w/ 45 taps. | | Westmeister (32), Atlanta, Georgia | | January 31, 2012 Going back to this place since graduating (10 + years ago) reminds me of all the beer I couldn’t afford then. The guys are super nice, helpful and knowledgeable. They had great selections and some of the big stouts that go quick in Atlanta where still on the shelves. I highly recommend stopping by to check this out if in Athens. | | tubehead (12), Atlanta, Georgia | | January 17, 2011 My friends told me to check this place out. Granted, the outside of the building looks pretty sketchy. I expected to find Jay and Silent Bob hanging out front. Inside I was shocked to see lots of beers that I was led to believe weren’t allowed to be sold in Georgia: Cigar City, over 14% ABV Dogfishhead, etc... The selection was enticing - very impressive. Not nearly the variety you could find in Atlanta but lots of stuff you don’t see ANYWHERE in the state. The clerk was friendly if not necessarily helpful. Young kid - college age. Prices a little higher than I usually see in Atlanta at either Hop City or Green’s but not outrageous. Very lacking in certain categories (small selection of Lambics) relative to ATL but worth the trip for the stuff I cannot find at any of the other retailers I normally visit. A good destination if you happen to be in Athens. | | Ryan82SM (65), Louisville, Kentucky | | September 12, 2010 This place is surprising on many levels: The outside seems like a laundromat converted into a beer store, with some cartoon paintings of brands on the walls. Inside: beer mecca. Service was helpful; it seemed like a clerk was out and about helping customers. Selection was just jaw dropping: 300+ bottles doesn’t scratch the surface; I’d say the number is easily twice that. Even better: there was a special shelf for lambic\gueuze... where can I put my mattress? Prices were maybe slightly above average, but still reasonable for quality. I wanted to rent a Chinook helicopter and fly this place home to Louisville, which has it’s own share of excellent beer destinations. It would fit right in, and give the best a run for their money. | | kiefdog (118), Tampa, Florida | | November 7, 2009 This is by far one of the best beer stores I have ever visited. Quaint and unassuming on the outside, this place is bursting with rare and hard to find beers on the inside. Lots of local and regional favorites along with an outstanding selection from around the country and around the world. I would find it difficult to control my spending if I lived closeby as there is just so much beer I wanted to try. Thankfully, I was limited to what I could drink before I traveled and then what would fit in my suitcase. This is another must stop if you are in a 100 mile radius. You wont be disappointed. | | MtStateBeer (21), Hurricane, West Virginia | | July 16, 2009 I’ve been to this place quite a few times and finally decided to rate it. This place was a must stop for me when I visited Athens the past few years. In just the three years that I shopped here, the selection got better and better. Each time I visited I typically spent a good bit of time and money, but always worthwhile. Service is awesome, Sachin and the crew were always willing to help. I can’t say enough about the folks who work here. They love beer and were always helping beer geeks like me and regular folks who were just there to try something new. Selection is great, last time I was there they were adding Founders to their selection and had a complete 4 or 5 shelf section dedicated to their Mikkeller selection. There were many Belgians, English, German, and a ton of American crafts. If you are ever in the Atlanta area or driving on I-85 in that area, it is well worth the stop. | | PorterPounder (219), Tallahassee, Florida | | June 27, 2009 I have found the perfect bottle shop - too bad I do not live in Athens! Literally at least a thousand beers to choose from - all categorized nicely - even has a section for sours. One of those stores where you are overwhelmed at the selections and you have to determine your priorities - low price tickers, high quality, missing selections from a favorite brewer? All can be accommodated here. Good selection of locals as well - which they had a few miscellaneous singles of local stuff from Georgia and the Carolinas - most were in six packs - but I had enough bombers to keep me satisfied. Bonus - if you buy more than six craft or imports (like that is a stretch for me) you get a discount and a free glass - what a deal! Will be a regular stop any time I am in Athens - which unfortunately is not too often | | CheersMate (132), Fremont (Seattle), Washington | | May 5, 2009 Took a little road trip today. I actually was there and back (from Midtown Atlanta) in less than 3 hours! To me, that is not a bad drive at all. They had a lot of good stuff that we can’t get in Atlanta. I don’t understand the disparity between Athens and Atlanta in terms of beer availability. I was worried at first because I thought the wine selection was going to overshadow the beer selection, but that was not the case. If you are in Atlanta and have an afternoon to spare, head to Five Points. The staff was friendly, and gave me 10% off for spending what I spent. Great beer store, and I can’t wait to head back sometime soon. |
