| KAggie97 (213), Ugly, Hot, and Humid Spring, Texas | | March 5, 2012 Went here for RBWG 12. Lots of great beers on tap (10 at the time, I think) plus the brewmaster gave our group some special stuff. (The sour was fantastic. Thanks!!!) Definitely worth the stop. I forget what I ate but I remember it being good. | zentropy (1), Texas does not count - explanation | | February 29, 2012 This is my regular haunt, so yeah, my rating may be a bit biased. The beer selection rotates frequently. Generally, the service is pretty good, but seems to suffer just a bit when it gets extremely busy. Most of the servers are very knowledgeable about the beers they serve. The food is also very good, nothing fried. The pizza ranges from pretty good to amazing. | | drowland (116), Tallahassee, Florida | | February 28, 2012 Stopped in during RBWG 2012. A small, well-lit brewpub with a nice ambiance. Local Texas brewery signs on the walls, barrels here and there, and all that good stuff.
Our poor waitress got stuck with a very large group of beer nerds, but she did her best, and the brewers were very kind and came out and talked to us, shared brews, etc.
I didn’t notice the beer selection beyond their own brews, which they had a surprisingly large amount of on tap.
I had a pizza for lunch and it was darn good.
The food is definitely a bit pricey, but the lunch specials are pretty cheap... you just don’t get a ton of food. Beer prices are average.
Overall, a definite stop for some really good and sometimes unique/interesting brews and some tasty food. | | Sledutah (151), Utah | | February 27, 2012 Stopped during RBWG. Lots of seating at the bar and in the restaurant. Service was slow. Granted we were a large group but they new we were coming for lunch. The brewers were friendly and gave us some new and interesting beers. Lots of taps with regular and limited release beers. A small refrigerator of bottled beers to go. | | Mora2000 (52), Dallas, Texas | | July 31, 2011 Great brewpub located in San Antonio. Brews a variety of beers ranging from barrel aged stouts to sours. One of the interesting things about Freetail is the variety of witbiers they brew. I have been at the pub when as many as six wits were on tap. Bottles are released occasionally, usually with great fanfare and bottle shares. There are also nice guest taps specializing in Texas craft beer. Food is pretty good, with very nice wood oven fired pizza. The pub also focuses on soccer, showing US matches as well as major games in other leagues and countries. | mbutler91c (1), San Antonio, Texas does not count - explanation | | July 23, 2011 Not a bad place to go, decent beer, and they do allow you to bring your dog to hte outside patio if behaved. However the service has been fair to poor the last few times I’ve been there. | willisreed (3), Texas does not count - explanation | | July 21, 2011 Great environment, really bad beer | | fata2683 (125), Tucson, Arizona | | June 18, 2011 stopped here while driving through the city and met up with LLcoolDave and BarZigKin for a couple of beers. Very neat place that sits in a shopping center but has plenty of character once inside. Nice selection of 10 house beers with 5 really thought out guest taps. You really can spend an afternoon here with such a selection. Food was very good IMO, I had a pizza that was a nice portion and very tasty. I was there in the winter but there was a deck off the side of the place for outside seating in warmer months. Cool place. | | Dogbrick (423), Columbus, Ohio | | March 24, 2011 (Visited 08/2009): Freetail is located on the northwest side of San Antonio on the "Loop". The driveway is kind of tricky to find, but once you get there parking is plentiful in their lot.
The exterior has a patio and a windmill. Inside the brewpub is essentially one big room with the bar in the rear next to the open kitchen, and seating throughout the rest of the space. It has sort of an industrial look with dark colors and brushed metal. The bar has a chalkboard listing all of the current beers available.
Freetail has 11 of their own beers on draught, plus around 8 guest taps mostly from other Texas brewers. As for bottles again the focus on the craft beers is regional. They also offer samplers of all of their beers (although it will take more than 1 sampler to try them all).
The beers are decent for the most part with a couple being interesting and/or above average. They had a few different Belgians, an Altbier, a Smoked Porter and an Ancho Chili beer to name a few.
Service was good during a slow lunch. Our server was familiar with the beer selection and did a good job labeling the various samples.
The pizza at Freetail was very good, and we were bummed to have so much left over without a fridge in our hotel to enjoy it later.
Overall this is definitely a place worth seeking out in the San Antonio area. | | fly (203), austin, Tejas, Alabama | | February 7, 2011 Was thrilled to find that this was only an exit or two away from a class competition my daughter was in on Saturday. Knew I could only have a single beer before heading home (as I keep it legal these days). Ran into a rather large crowd for an early afternoon to find I had just missed a bottle release. DAMN. But after getting a glass of Bat Rastard and sitting down, I noticed Eric from Real Ale at a table and recognized Jason, the brewer for Freetail. (He’s a super nice guy, for the record) He sent a bottle of their prickly pear sour and barrel aged Bat Rastard along for my friend Doug to try, so all wound up being even better. The place didn’t seem as sterile as other reports, so they’ve either funked up the place a bit or ...
Now I just want to make it back there.
(amd as if I needed it, they had Live Oak Old Treehugget on tap as well as a few other guest beers) |
