carlinmike (7), Wellington, New Zealand does not count - explanation | | November 15, 2009 My favourite pub in Auckland. 4-5 English stye cask beers on handpump including Grafton Porter and the excellent Bitter & Twisted.
Food is above-average pub grub, with the Fish & Chips and Lamb Shanks as standouts.
Beautifully fitted out former library on the outer edge of the CBD but close enough to walk and also on the main bus routes.
Bar staff are friendly & helpful and you can buy a flagon for takeaway and refills. | | phaleslu (88), Cincinnati, Ohio | | October 14, 2009 Galbraith’s is a great brewpub in the Mt. Eden area of Auckland, which we were able to take a nice long walk to from our downtown hotel. The building is dark green with red signage outside and a roomy, mostly wood interior- perfect atmosphere. The brewing operation is on the right as you enter, with the main bar and restaurant area on the left. We went on a slow Sunday night so I have no sense of how crowded it might be on other nights. The bartenders were fine. There are 9 taps, 7 of them house brews and 5 of those cask. The guest taps were Tuatara Hefe and one I don’t recall. Additionally, there are 50+ bottles in the fridge. The house brews are reasonable, but particularly the bottles from outside brewers are relatively expensive. We didn’t eat there but everyone said the food is outstanding. Very nice experience overall, and I recommend a tasting rack to try all of the cask ales. | | EastCoaster (10), , | | June 27, 2009 First time Having a Real Ale, incredible setting. A place where I would be as happy sitting down for an entire afternoon with a book or friends. | boogey (5), Auckland, New Zealand does not count - explanation | | June 4, 2009 best place in Auckland, if not Aotearoa to drink beer. If you look for traditional English Ales brewed with a New Zealand twist, don’t look further. Huge selection of local and international bottled beer as well as guest beers on draught. Nice atmosphere and even a nice little patio in the back. great! | | nate2g (151), Brisbane, Australia | | March 24, 2009 Traditional English style pub with 8 house brews and a few guests on draught. Wooden interior, with brewing tanks visable through the window, and plenty of beer paraphernalia scattered amongst the pub. The beers are served from the hand pump and the food is reliable. I couldn’t imagine there would be too many quiet nights here. | pickled (2), , New Zealand does not count - explanation | | April 7, 2008 Solid food, nice old building and kid-friendly. So far, every time I’ve been to Gallys (about every six months for the last few years) there has been something different to try. I’m not sure about their strongest brews but the bottled selection is excellent and their session beers are some of the best brewed in NZ. and my kids like all the crap on the walls and the fact that you can see the brewery in action. | | TheGrandMaster (77), Auckland, New Zealand | | January 6, 2008 [ Updated March 10, 2008 ] The best pub in NZ - the ones I’ve visited anyway. Always my destination for a beer. Their beers are something you will find hard to find elsewhere in NZ (ales on handpull) and I find the atmosphere the closest thing I know to a British pub. Top of my list of things I was looking forward to when I returned from the UK. | kempicus (5), Wellington, New Zealand does not count - explanation | | December 16, 2007 Best pub in New Zealand without a doubt! So good in fact we had our wedding reception there. Great food, great beer, great service! | OStreetBrewery (1), Wellington, New Zealand does not count - explanation | | November 4, 2007 The standard by which I judge all other pubs, the location of my first pint of real ale, and the only reason to visit Auckland, period. Beer Mecca. | yalnikim (6), Wellington, New Zealand does not count - explanation | | April 17, 2006 It doesn’t get much better than this. Good pub grub, a nice (though small) outdoor area with hop vines, great conversation and outstanding beer (handpumped cask ale, rare bottled beer). I’m well overdue for a good visit. The only thing I miss about no longer taking work trips to Auckland... |
