Nice beer garden and pub. Have both indoor tables / booths and garden wooden picnic like stools with shades. I visited on Sat. afternoon, place was packed and a (irish?) band was playing live. They have 4 beers on tap - The traditional ale is the best, the serious ale is also quite nice. Have full food menu and also a shop selling t-shirts and maybe the bottled beers - they had none during my visit. Overall good.

With raised middle finger you approach the bar and you then point to your choice. Mine was the Serious, a strong dark ale. The bartender nods his acceptance and shortly thereafter I am presented with my pint. "UP YOURS" I jovially chant to the fellow drinkers. We all raise our glasses and take a deep swig.
Soon the brew master Steve Gilroy joins the fray, with his banter and good cheer. His Irish charm shines through as he talks to the patrons, with jokes and innocent flirts running abundant.
There are live music acts, some of which Steve is part of.
The food is proper Irish pub fare, made with Steve’s own beer or ale.
Although there are wines, cool drinks and hard tack available, the only beer that you will get is Steve’s own beers.
The beer tour has changed to an informal discussion of beer, the brewery and other random topics. You get to taste all four of his beers whilst on the tour.
Overall, Gilroy’s Brewery is an amazing place and I have been enjoying Steve’s beers and company for numerous years and I hope that I will be blessed with his company for years to come!

Fun spot. Relaxed beer garden. Good vibes. Both the "traditional" and the "serious" are decent beers. Big mistake using nitro on all their taps, though. The lager really suffers!

Right, if looking for a real ale experience in Gauteng, this is about the only place to go. Gilroys is moving their brewery to this location making it a proper brewery/brewpub. When I was there the new place was still under construction, and what was there was a tiny, rustic shack with no toilets or anything but their 4 beers on tap outside + the same beers for sale in bottles - not chilled. And the beer is absolutely excellent by South African standards - especially the Serious Strong Ale. Service by the slightly tipsy brother in law (and director) to Steve Gilroy was chatty and very friendly. A taxi from Joburg is about half an hour - if the driver can find it in the first place (make sure to give him the directions from the website), this really is in the countryside, but it’s definitely worth a visit. But expect the grander new facility to be open soon. And by the way, don’t try to call them: the copper cables have been stolen by scrap bandits and the phone company will only give you the message that the number no longer exists.... Awesome. But be aware of the limited hours right now.
