In a bulding that used to be the Blue Ox and kept the german theme going .... darker decor/german tavern (although it could use a facelift especially the bathrooms) with a small outdoor beer garden (they used to have a deck, but thats no longer open) .... tap list was a mix of american micro, seasonal Aprihop from Dogfishhead and german with just a few choices for bottles .... I was definitely looking forward to the food and wasn’t disappointed even though I heard mix reviews .... Must be a new cook because the Schnitzel I ordered was great and my girl ordered the prime rib and it was huge and tasty .... the cucumber salad was great and stuffed mushrooms excellent ..... service was just a bartender and one waitress but she was friendly and prompt .... I’d go here again if I was in the neighborhood for sure, but wouldn’t go out of my way

It looks and feels like an old German beer hall minus the long drinking tables. The selection is decent but they mostly carry German style ales which makes sense given the theme. The food was ok, my burger was not really cooked enough. Too pricey especially considering the location.

This was our first visit to Hop Angel, and possibly our last. After paying for the babysitter and making the 20 minute drive, we were left sorely disappointed with our choice for the rare date night (should have gone to Otto’s). First the good points - the beer - well, at least the draft list (we never saw a bottle list, so I don’t even know if they even had bottles). Good mix of German and US - both local and good craft beers from other states. Now the bad. Our appetizer came out after our main courses (burgers) - we were never asked "do you still want the appetizer?" after we were told the chef burnt our first apps. Burgers came out but we were left with no napkins or silverware and had to chase our waitress down (she gave us napkins and we had to chase her a 2nd time for silverware). I ordered my burger medium rare, and it was SO overcooked. It was actually crunchy on the outside it was so bad - gray and crumbly on the inside. Had to find the waitress a 3rd time to send that back because no way in hell am I paying $11 for a burger that over cooked. The 2nd burger came out perfect, but my wife was already done her dinner by that time. Also, we never received any sort of itemized bill - just a credit card slip with a total due on it. It’s a shame - the atmosphere of old people from NE Philly was kind of charming, but I’d be hard pressed to say I’d want to visit here again.

Been here a few times and enjoyed the food and beer. Great place to stop in for a few beers and brats. I still think it’s early to really judge this place but it seems to be going in the right direction. They say they will be getting a beer engine. I just wish they would add a little more American food to the menu. I know it’s a German theme but if you really don’t care for German food it’s not a place you would go. But the beer selection is really starting to come around. I would recommend stopping in and giving it a try. I was there for Mad Elf Night and had a great time.

Scoats’ newest venture is The Hop Angel. Scoats, runs the Grey Lodge in Philly as well. While the Hop Angel Brauhaus doesn’t have as large a beer list, it is a welcomed addition to the area. The beer and food are good. Went there Saturday night, and was very pleased. Lots of Octoberfest beers on tap, being the season, as well as hefe’s. Food was very good, brought to the table quickly, with good service. Check this place out if you get the chance. This more info from their website: Hop Angel Brauhaus is a new Germanic bar/restaurant in an old building at 7980 Oxford Avenue in the Fox Chase neighborhood in Philadelphia PA. Formerly 7980 Oxford was the site of the Old Brauhaus, the Blue Ox Brauhaus, and most recently Blue Ox Bistro. With Hop Angel Brauhaus, we have brought the brauhaus back, while also bringing something new and fresh. Our menu features traditional German specialties. Our chef Matt Hartnett has an Alsatian background so our menu (like Alsace) is Germanic with a French flair. Eventually we’ll be adding pizza, making it an Alpine menu. Our kitchen is open late 7 days a week. We feature a rotating selection of German style beers from both the USA and abroad. We are located a block from SEPTA’s Fox Chase regional rail station and a 1/2 block from a SEPTA bus turn-around. You can contact us at patrick@hopangel.com and scoats@hopangel.com.
