Bar and restaurant - used to be where they brewed Champagne Velvet (now brewed by Upland - usually available). Good selection on tap - both local and national plus quite a few choices in bottles. Nice place - worth a stop if in the area.
Stopped in here on a Tuesday evening before an ISU basketball game. The building is a historic brick building with a wood interior. Itís a former brewery - used to be Terre Haute then Moggerís Brewing - and they still use the word íbreweryí on some of their online stuff and signage, which is misleading. They havenít brewed since 2007 and have no plans to return to it, having sold off their system. This was the original home of Champagne Velvet, which was purchased by Upland. They usually keep that on tap, but not when I was there. They had some Sun King, Three Pints, Stone, Founders, and other regional and national crafts. There are some refrigerators over at the side of the bar where you walk in, and there are probably 100-200 bottles of craft stuff. The interior is all wood and fairly low lighting, very historic feeling. The staff is friendly and knowledgable, answering a lot of my questions about the place and its history and current state. It was not crowded at all and super quiet. Beers all seem to be served as pints. Prices are good - not as low as Sonka - and the food is probably a bit high for the town. Overall, super cool place and Iíll definitely be back. Worth a stop if youíre in town or even just passing through.
Stopped in with my wife for lunch while passing through Terre Haute and enjoyed the stop. They didnít have a ton of beers on draft, but they had a solid selection of bottles. I donít know how fresh they are though, and would probably avoid IPAs/APAs. The food was good and the service was solid. Enjoyed the old brewery location and feel as well. Iíll be back.
My second favorite place to go for quality beer selection and good food in Terre Haute. Only reason it doesnít rate higher is that they have fewer taps than my first favorite (Sonkaís). Nice food menu (recommend the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich), great atmosphere in the bar.. no problems with smoke any longer as Vigo County finally went smoke free in all restaurants. Very old building with a lot of character. One of the places I make sure to take clients from out of town.
The building is of historical significance as it is the former "Terre Haute Brewing Company" building. THBC was one of the top 5 breweries in the United States before prohibition. Itís signature beer was "Champagne Velvet". The owner of the building tried to revive the brewery and Champagne Velvet beer, but ultimately sold both labels separately. Terre Haute Brewing Company became Wabash Valley Brewing Company - and does not have any rights to the label Champagne Velvet.
Champagne Velvet has recently been bought by Upland Brewing Company out of Bloomington Indiana. CV is now available regionally.
Located on a historical street of Terre Haute, Moggerís has three distinct sections. The dining area, the bar area, and the outside patio. The patio is the most recent addition. It was built in the past 10 years. The dining area is nice, with a lot of dark wood floors, walls, table, and partitions. There are tributes to Champagne Velvet Beer dotted around the building. Champagne Velvet was a brewery in Terre Haute back in the mid-20th century that was brewed in a building adjacent to Moggerís. There have been a couple of attempts to resurrect the name, but none have been extraordinarily successful. The first effort about 15 years ago seemed to be the best. With a stout, a pale, and a blonde, it seemed to be pretty tasty stuff. But, the brewer quickly jumped the shark and it went to hell in a hand basket. Currently, Upland is brewing an homage to Champagne Velvet. I havenít had it, so I canít make any judgment about whether or not itís good. According to the historical accounts, Champagne Velvet was responsible for the first American-brewed Pale Ale. The bar in Moggerís (the actual bar structure) is gorgeous and ornate. Historical relics, stained glass, and signs add to the dťcor of this nearly exclusively dark wood facility. Itís a very relaxing and rustically pretty place. Iíve spent many a Friday evening here, so I have a warm fondness for it. The service is usually good and attentive. Never pretentious. Beer selection is better than average for the town. While there 10 or fewer taps, they are usually pouring some of the Midwestís best breweries beers. They have a wider variety of bottles in their cooler adjacent to their bar. They have some really tasty grub at good prices too. Great place. Highly recommended.

Grew up near Terre Haute & visit this pub every time Iím Back Home Again in Indiana. Fantastic beer list, beautiful, antique bar, the very best kind of pub atmosphere. The seating areas off to your left as you come in can have somewhat of a creosote/tar odor, so sit in the bar (it can get smokey, but they have a decent amount of ventalation & fans). Their food is really great (the house dressing on their salad is even memorable!). Dripping with real-one-time-working-brewery history, it may be a shame that Champagne velvet is no longer brewed here, but that doesnít take away from the utter charm of this terrific place. Highly recommended- wish we had anything with half the local-neighborhood-historical-bar feel this place has. Favorite place to enjoy all the midwest micro-brews I canít get in TX.
Grew up near this brewery in Terre Haute and never really tried the beer until a few years ago. Very nice older but updated set of buildings. Great food within a reasonable price range. They have 12 beers on tap and over 140 different types of bottled beers. Service was very fast and very knowledgeable on the different draft beers. Worth the trip to see a famous brewery and one of the oldest still work in Indiana.
Nice place to stop and have a beer and a Blemel Burger... They have revamped their beer menu a bit though..some for the better some not so much but the selection of midwest macro brews on tap have increased and thats a plus... Enjoy!
