| Frank (50), Chicago, Illinois | | March 22, 2012 For a fairly traditional brewbup, I am not sure there is one done better in the whole country. I stopped in for a late lunch. They had a good dozen or so taps of their own beer, almost half of them w/ a cask as an option. I was pleased to see many lower ABV beers on the cask too. (Cask IIPA is great but I believe this serving method to be best for session ales.) The food was standard gasto-pub type fare. I got a short rib sandwich and it is easily the best sandwich, burger, wrap or similar I’ve ever had a brewpub. The fries were above average too. The atmosphere in the early afternoon was fairly low key and I really loved the old bar look of the place. The servers were quite friendly and helpful and in general I really enjoyed stopping in for a few pints and a meal here. My only complaint from a beer perspective is maybe they could have done a few more guest drafts or perhaps had a guest on cask. Still, my primary reason to go to brewpubs is to drink the beer they brew there so that is only a small complaint. | | swoopjones (190), Buffalo, New York | | February 15, 2012 great looking old saloon, little decor but great feel to the place. Only had one bar, a pale, & was not impresssed. Short rib sandwich was delicious. Cool place to stop, One block from corner of Haight & Ashbury | | Torontoblue (16), Edmonton, Alberta | | February 7, 2012 Visited 4th Feb 2012. Arrived for brunch around 11am, and got there just before a mad rush of patrons arriving 30 minutes later. Got seated straight away and ordered a pint of the Dark Star Mild (Cask). Cask was a little old, probably on it’s last day of being served. Nice to have a proper 20oz pint glass too. Had the sublime Crab Cake Benedict for brunch and followed up with a half of the Proving Ground IPA (Cask). This one was definitely old and was not very pleasant. So, away from the casks it was. Ordered the great value sample tray and was tempted to have the Strong Beer Month tray for an extra $1.00, but was far too early to be having 11%+ beers ;-)
The place got crazy busy around 12.30 and people were lining up to get in. Great cafe/bar feeling place. Friendly staff and good beers. A definite place to visit when in San Fran...and it’s in the marvellous Haight-Ashbury area! | | msante79 (253), Mount Prospect, Illinois | | January 24, 2012 Small brewpub on Haight Street half way between Toronado and Alembic. Stopped in with my wife on our little pub crawl. Lots of wood and dimly light with candles on the table. Had 2 IPAs which were both average. Food was solid. Bacon wrapped dates were pretty good as was the burger. Overall it is definitely worth a stop. | | badlizard (109), San Diego, California | | December 28, 2011 A cool hippie spot. Good food, decent beer, average service, lots of Grateful Dead playing. Good date spot at night with candle light &c. Overall worth a visit. | | danbierman (10), California | | August 22, 2011 Very nice local beer pub. Atmosphere is great, service is fast and knowledgeable. Great selection of beers, personal favorite was the Stout of Circumstance, a must try if coming here for the first time. Also a few good bitters and IPA’s for the hops lovers. Food was good, pretty standard brew pub food. Overall a nice find in a busy part of The City. | | jrallen34 (207), Chicago, Illinois | | August 12, 2011 Headed here straight from SF0, and it was a definitely the right move. Located in a great people watching part of town, within 2 minutes I was offered weed and shrooms. The inside is nice, huge informative chalk board, awesome bathroom, cool vibe and service as well... Has 12 brewed beers with 5 in cask, great selection and variety. the beers for the most part are really good, proving ground ipa is a must try. Great sampler set-up. Beer for beer quality is one of the best brew pubs I’ve been to. Great food but only had apps, would love to have dinner. High recommend. | | paintedmaple (36), Fenton, Michigan | | July 28, 2011 Had breakfest one Saturday morning (first in the door) and was rewarded with sunnyside up duck eggs and Saison. Awesome. | | pushkinwow (54), Ottawa, Ontario | | July 9, 2011 Nice brewpub in the haight. Great food, good location, 12-15 taps of their own beers most worth trying. Service (for lunchtime at least) is very quick and friendly. Great place to people watch either on the 3 small tables outside (if its not too cold) or in the large windows outside. Definitely worth a visit. |
