food is amazing and beer list is great. tap beer however is there down fall

A beautiful high end masculine kind of room as you would expect. It’s a little out of place in Detroit but that’s nothing to complain about. It’s expensive and mostly worth it for the food. The beer list was over priced and while it has some really fantastic bottles I was hoping for more and better. There was not much in the way of interesting Midwest beers. Mostly they were standard and flagship types though good. Still the service was very good...we left totally stuffed and happy. The charcuterie plate was probably the best I’ve had.

Came here for a romantic dinner with my girlfriend earlier this month. Atmosphere: beautiful swanky interior, wine cellar towers over a large, well-lit bar, diverse cosmopolitan crowd minds their own. We enjoyed our cozy booth overlooking the dining room and kitchen. All of the tables are set up to provide maximum privacy and I love how the pit roast is clearly visible to patrons. A gorgeous restaurant. Service: our waiter made excellent food and drink suggestions and everything arrived promptly. At one point he got caught up in a conversation with another table and I had to snag the floor manager to order another beer. Aside from this misstep, though, the service was impeccable, especially the treatment that we received from bartender Joe after our meal. Selection: huge Sour list is the main event with several dinner bottles from Jolly Pumpkin, Drie Fonteinen, Fantome, and De Ranke. However, the small but well-selected draught lineup is equally impressive. I went for a Short’s Hangin’ Frank IPA, Great Lakes Christmas Ale, and Madrugada Obscura Stout (Joe’s pick) on tap and a Big Sky Moose Drool Brown Ale out of the bottle. All four beers were fantastic, and the lady loved her champagne cocktails and sauvignon blanc. Food: outrageously flavourful fare from one of America’s most respected chefs. We ordered the Stuffed Peppers, Fried Brussels, Lemon Chicken, Alaskan Halibut, and Passion Fruit Sorbet. The entire meal was absolutely sumptuous and it easily ranks among the best we’ve ever had. Prices are fair as 5 courses and 6 drinks came to $125. Overall: Roast is the model fine dining restaurant and bar. Unlike other upscale eateries, it offers a wide range of world class beers to pair with its bold cuisine. We had an amazing time here and I look forward to returning in the near future.

What can one say about a place like Roast? Fine dining has yet to become a place where a beer lover can find comfort; many of the best restaurants in our fair city are proud of the fact they offer Guinness or Blue Moon or some other drinkable macro beers. Not Roast. This is a place for not only the carnivore, but the beer geek as well. No more do you have to suffer because you can’t find a beer with proper acidity and tartness to compliment your marrow. Never again must you groan because there are no beers that go with your Guinness ice cream! This is a restaurant that pays attention not only to the gustatory details, but the alcoholic ones as well. Gorgeous decor, fantastic service, experienced and knowledgeable waitstaff, fantastic food, and great beer. What more do you need?

If I have one complaint, it’s that for a beer menu that exceeds 60 bottles (with 4 draughts), there a distinct lack of beers in several styles. It’s a nit, but one I have to pick since everything else is so good.

Besides having probably the most informed craft beer menu in the state of Michigan, what really puts Roast Detroit over the top for me is the "Merlot to go" law that lets you take home any bottle on the menu, opened or capped. Go to their website and look at the bottom of the wine list: the last two whole pages (about 50 beers) are craft beers from the midwest, across the country, and around the world. They only have six taps, half of them good to excellent craft selections. Wine list is equally strong and extensive. The food favors meat, meat, and more meat, with flavorful side dishes and rich deserts. The bartenders and wait staff are knowlegeable and enthusiastic about the entire menu. If you are in Detroit and crave some of the best craft brews available, it is worth your while to at least go to the bar and order bottles to go. If you happen to be staying at the Westin Book Cadillac hotel, you have landed at one of Detroit’s best resturaunts too.

fine dining as i’ve always dreamed of. so much meat! a brilliant beer list, challenging and intriguing, with a number of sours- including multiple cantillion. the only bar in the world with a vertical of leelanau whaleback white- 2 different, on the menu, but knowing them, will be 3 soon enough. food is outstanding. pricey, and certainly not an everyday place for many, but extremely well executed.
