| Strebs (76), St. Louis, Missouri | | February 6, 2012 [ Updated February 17, 2012 ] This place was a time warp back to ’60’s for me, but I guess all of Boulder is. The Nepalese wall hangings were appreciated as iconic reminders of a misspent youth. I really enjoyed the food and the service was nothing short of tremendous. The beer selection was limited to their beers and I found nothing interesting or different. | | ads135 (49), Lawrence, | | November 26, 2011 A great microbrewpub. My favorite in Boulder, possibly even the Front Range in its entirety. Great food, good beers, in the center of Boulder. Visited on two occasions. Once in 2010, once with Jay’s bachelor party in 2011. Wouldn’t mind another. | | maltdog (68), Colorado | | November 8, 2011 Saturday early dinner around 5pm, there was about a ten minute wait. We soon made our way to the bar and were given all sorts of free sample tastes in mere seconds. Everyone was incredibly friendly, eager to please, and knowledgeable about the beers- both flavor profile and ingredients. After being seated, the bartender sent over more samples of beers he thought we would enjoy. All the beers (nice variety here) are original and tasty... a few had slight clove notes but that really didn’t matter. Place is decorated with artsy tapestries and new age murals, crowd mostly 20somethings. Delicious and messy burgers; homemade fries were a little oily and not crispy enough. After an hour it was four deep at the bar and about 10 in line at the door (most carrying infants, strange). No credit cards but ATM on premises. Despite the crowds, it was not "crowded" and there was plenty of room to navigate. Service was simply outstanding. A very busy, happy, friendly, fun, awesome brewpub. Highly recommended. | | craftbeerdesign (92), Alpharetta, Georgia | | October 21, 2011 My favorite place to eat and drink in Boulder! The service here is top notch - awesome people all the time! Their beer is great and spans many styles. The food rocks and the price is right. Just go there and bring CASH - no credit cards. | | Beershine (540), The Sunshine State, Florida | | October 9, 2011 This IS quintessential Boulder, they even have a Jerry Garcia DOLL inside and people wear tie dies. Casual and friendly, more a restaurant than bar, but sitting at the bar is a nice experience and gives insight into unique Boulder culture. If you get the chance to try Hop Vivant, it’s really yummy. | | TURDFERGUSON (117), Carrboro, North Carolina | | August 16, 2011 Visited here in May 2010 with Mike (3/4) and my friend Aaron Richards, who was living in Denver at the time. Pretty hoppin place with many people crowded around the small bar in the back. weird setup with the bar and kitchen all crammed in next to each other. Interesting list of beers, not your typical amber, ipa, stout, porter, pils. I appreciate that given what I’m used to. Solid brews, solid food. I could live in Boulder very easily. | | Dogbrick (423), Columbus, Ohio | | June 1, 2011 (Visited 07/2010): Mountain Sun is located in the Pearl Street Mall area of Boulder. Metered parking is fairly abundant in the surrounding blocks, although it might take some good timing to find a spot right by the brewpub.
The inside is relatively small, with a narrow walkway up the middle of the space and tables/booths on either side. There is a bar of sorts in the rear that allows for standing. Funky artwork adorns the walls. The brewing equipment is in the far back end of the building near the restrooms and is visible behind windows.
The beer selection is pretty impressive. There are around 15 beers on tap, from lighter styles like Quinn’s Golden Ale, Saint Amos Wit, a Saison, and a Blackberry Wheat to richer fare like couple IPAs, a Coffee Porter and Thunderhead Stout. All of the beers are average to above average, with a couple being standouts. Samplers are available in flights of 6.
Service was good despite the place being very busy. Our server brought us a ton of samples and gave recommendations for other beer spots in the area. On top of that, one of the brewers saw me scoping out the brewing equipment and invited me in to take a look around, which was nice.
We did not try any food on our visit.
Overall this is a very good beer destination in Boulder and I would definitely visit again. | | rougeau13 (54), Texas | | April 19, 2011 Nice place, if a bit hectic. The people were extemely nice, the food was excellent, and the beer was at least average or better. | | EithCubes (158), , Germany | | March 19, 2011 Definitely a winner on atmosphere, which improved the quality of the two otherwise sub-par beers I had. Packed with youngins, friendly staff. Liked some of the food ideas but more than a little lacking in size and execution - good sauce but tiny burger, with greasy mealy fries. Good location, but cash-only is a big drawback. My experience at the Southern Sun redeemed this bit of disappointment. | | Sammy (408), Toronto, Ontario | | February 10, 2011 This is a restaurant that serves their own beer, I think there was a couple of guest taps. Their own beer was average, even above average, i.e. the Kind. No bar, mixed service as once they saw I was there only for beer, I was handed over to someone else to order beer from scratch-so not their type of customer. Small place, on the touristy Pearl Steet Mall. Some extra stouts out for stout month, but only the one barrel aged stout from a promised list. Not a place to meet and talk beer as people here with their cliques, but I managed.
