This place is outstanding. Just opposite the towering Dom this small pub is over 100 years old and isn’t afraid to show it. Outside there are tables and chairs but the real treat is in the dark and atmospheric interior which is a haven of tranquility off the busy Marienplatz. During the day it’s the perfect place to relax and while away an afternoon whilst evenings are busy, raucaus and great for people watching. Evenings are hard to get a seat without a reservation but hang around and you might get lucky. The real treat though is the beer: Augustiner Helles, served crucially from the barrel. On tap at the Augustiner Gastatte nearby this is pleasant. Vom Holz Fass (wooden barrel, gravity) it is heaven. One of the greatest beers anywhere, beautifully served in this superb pub. Beer selection is irrelavant; If they served beer in heaven, Helles on gravity would be it. A must when in Munchen along with Augustiner Keller and Forschungsbrau.

One of my favourite spots in Munich. With the grand Frauernkirche raising up beyond eye sight of the al fresco tables out front. The service here is the best in Munich, the bierwenches race around the tight restaurant and similarly tight outdoor area, amongst the many locals that fill it to bursting point. Cosy place, beer straight from the wood and the best place for an Augustiner Dunkel. Beer is only available in half litres but they are quick to replenish if you run low. Outstanding food, traditional German with the odd flashing of more easy going tourist fare. A lot of sausage pumps out of this kitchen but I highly recommend the Pork Knuckle. Fantastic stuff. A little gem of a place away from the hordes of tourists just a mere stones throw away from Marienplatz.
