| Hansen (30), Assentoft, Denmark | | December 14, 2011 Nice hotel, good food and traditionel belgian beers. Kind service and acceptable pricing. | | prawlie (18), , England | | October 27, 2011 A very pleasant stay for a night, nice room, a very good breakfast, nice staff and a good bar with a decent selection. I’d happily go again. | | baxterfish (120), , England | | May 15, 2011 Gone down hill since the Halcyon days of Guy & Bea. Still a nice pub with a good selection of beer but the service is unenthusiastic and often absent. Used to be packed on a Friday and Saturday evening but now struggles to attract a handful of locals. Still worth a visit, however and the hotel is good value, if basic(the landlady is nice but seems to leave the bar to her less-welcoming husband and beer ignorant son). | | Scopey (103), Croydon, England | | May 3, 2011 We were in the area, so we thought we would pop in the Palace for a drink. It was mid week, so we were the only customers, but we were pleasantly welcomed. However even though it was just us the service wasn’t the fastest! Best thing about the place was probably the 3 Fonteinen Oude Kriek, which cost us less that 6 euros for a 75cl - bargain!!!! Well worth a visit if you’re in the area. | | KAggie97 (204), Ugly, Hot, and Humid Spring, Texas | | April 12, 2010 Man, this place is AWESOME. So after checking into to my room, I looked in the bar to see what was available. I see 10 bottles sitting on the bar and I have a funny feeling it’s something good. Lo and behold, they were all Westy 12s. I was very kindly given 8 of them by the owner himself. (And yes, I am going on record as saying they were given to me.) Anyway, I told the owner I liked sours and he pulled out an ’03 3 Fonteinen Kriek. Holy crap. I had sooooo many good beers here (I drank with some locals until 8 am- Belgians don’t mess around with their beer, and they are extremely friendly and sociable, especially when you tell them you’re from Texas.) Felt like hell the next day but sometimes the pain is worth it. I will definitely go back here someday. But next time my drinking ends at midnight. Recommended for anyone in Poperinge. The owners are great, the locals are great, and tons of good beer is available. Ask about vintages the owner has lying around. | | harrisoni (12), Ashford, England | | October 23, 2009 I stayed here a night whilst doing a pilgrimage to In de Vrede, which I did in the afternoon and then sat at the bar here and drank until I had to go to bed. Highlight was the oldish 3 Fonteinen Kriek in bottle. Service could have been a bit faster and there were a fair number of beers not available from the menu, especially the lambics. Also took ages to find an Orval chalice. Overall though I liked the atmosphere, even if everyone else was speaking Flemish, I was made to feel welcome at the bar. | sc0ttyd0g (4), , England does not count - explanation | | December 17, 2008 Deserted. No one behind the bar, nobody in the hotel. | | Travlr (500), Washington, Washington DC | | November 29, 2008 Maybe we came at an off-night for the bartender, but we tried this place twice to give him the benefit of the doubt. Very good beer selection. No food. Least friendly bartender we have encountered outside Brussels. Complained when we arrived, complained about each beer we ordered, complained that we ordered a beer within half an hour of closing. And the sign above the bar says "Keep Smiling!" Closes early, even during the hops festival, which only happens once every three years. Life is too short, and there is too much good beer elsewhere. | | 3fourths (917), Boulder, Colorado | | June 4, 2008 Small bar on the first floor of a hotel. 4-5 draught Belgians and a small beer book of pretty decent stuff, but all I wanted was an Orval. Visited late at night, so a small crowd of people friendly with the staff were sitting around talking and smoking and drinking. Nice enough place overall considering the town. | | eaglefan538 (91), Wilmington, Delaware | | January 17, 2008 Well, if you are ever in Poperinge, this place is a must stop. Has a huge beer menu to look through, the service is in English and was personalized by of the family owners herself, and the knowledge shared with us tourists was great. I’d go back in a second if in the area. The Westvleteren beers are available here, although not for sale. Just spend some money at the Palace and ask for a bottle, and they might serve you one (because they can’t sell it). Unfortunately, most of the town of Poperinge shuts down on Wednesdays as a rest day, so be sure to arrive on another day (although, the owners would have opened it for us Wednesday IF they did not have something else they were attending that same evening - so be sure to call ahead IF you cannot avoid a Wednesday! |
