| BarrelRoller (10), , | | November 10, 2009 Stayed in the tiny Inn next door. Location and bar interior were excellent. Good mix of young and old patrons, with the bar going well into the early morning. it was cold and snowy but sitting out on the patio and listening to the cathedral bells ringing was a holey beer experience. | | Feinschmecker (52), Seattle, Washington | | October 1, 2009 Across from the cathedral and in a touristy area, but really nice scenery. The server admitted that she knew nothing about the beers. They have 50-60 beers in the bottle and the prices are not bad at all. I had a couple of beers and then a 5 year Genever for 3 Euro 50. | Berley31 (5), New Brunswick does not count - explanation | | May 28, 2009 I had read in a travelguide that this was an excellent bar to visit on a cold, rainy day, and that’s exactly the type of day it was when I went. The little stove in the middle of the bar made everything quite warm and comfortable, and Jupiler (the house cat) was very friendly, as was the staff. Not as many beers on hand as some of the other places, but still a good selection, and some excellently-priced genever as well. The upstairs part is great to have a drink and smoke a cigar. Awesome spot. | | thewolf (123), Kolding, Denmark | | March 16, 2009 Very homey place. I love the stove in the middle of the room :o) Though it meant that the top floor was seriously humid and hot! A fine selection, but it was quite a lot of the same-old. Service was fair, if a little busy. | | BeerBelcher (130), Columbus, Ohio | | October 24, 2008 I loved the Antwerp beer scene, and for me that started at Paters Vaetje. A homey little place right next to the Antwerp cathedral, this was a great place to start a beer tour of Antwerp.
It is a small wooden bar with a few tables and chairs behind a small store front facing the cathedral. Up a narrow staircase there is a loft with more seating and a ceiling so low you feel like you’re in a doll-house. I really liked the atmosphere here.
Beer is 6 taps and 100+ bottles. Smoking is permitted but on the Saturday afternoon I visited, was not excessive (despite a packed bar).
Service was quick and efficient from three bartendresses behind the bar, although I judged the level of beer knowledge from behind the bar to be pretty average. Clientele was young people, but this bar didn’t have a college bar feel and didn’t seem touristy despite its location. It didn’t seem like a beer-geek mecca, but rather a place for locals on the town on a Saturday that just happened to offer quite a bit for the beer geek (I had a Malheur 12 here).
Out of the 4 places I visited in Antwerp (Waagstuk, Oud Arsenaal, Paters Vaetje, Kulminator), this was my third favorite, but still a must-see. | | Theis (80), , Denmark | | March 23, 2008 OK-place... just a pub !! Selection: a lot of the normal stuff, but not just sweet yeasty stuff like Chimay, leffe and Hoegaarden. They also have Boon, De Dolle, Rodenbach and Lindeman. Didn’t get any food, but selection looks like normal bar-food: sausage & cheese plates. Staff is of course friendly..... | | Skinnyviking (63), Copenhagen, Denmark | | March 18, 2008 Went here twice. First time had food and drinks at first floor. Very crowded but not too noisy and no smoking. Second time downstairs at the bar. Although the staff was very busy they were still friendly, I did not taste their knowledge. I did not have difficulty in finding some beers I had not tasted before. The food was exellent. Prices OK. | Hopduveltommi (9), Holden, Massachusetts does not count - explanation | | March 16, 2008 Very convenient location, right next to the Cathedral. Very good selection. My favorite in Antwerp after the Kulminator. Very good soup and bread to wash down the beer. | | Poperinge (119), Cowtown, Alberta | | February 3, 2008 The ambience here is cool as the patio is right beside the church. I think we where there at 3 am and the place was rocking, small but solid beer list and didn’t eat there. | | Magicdave6 (50), London, England | | June 3, 2007 Im very fond of this place. Female waitress’s which is always nice. Good decor with old beer stuff. Over 100 beers to choose from and theres always something i havnt had along with a good few "old favourites". Food gives a good hearty lunch, with salad which im fond of. |
