| Bjarte1 (40), , Norway | | May 2, 2012 An institution both beer and food wise! | | suprchunk (60), Heinsberg, Germany | | April 2, 2012 Nice bar and restaurant. Great food and a good value for being such a tourist trap. Beautiful decor inside and the service was decent enough. The beers are limited to their own, but that’s why I came. Awesome beer. | | BlackHaddock (175), , England | | March 29, 2012 Turn right as you walk in and you enter a fantastic church like hall, with a bar at the far end (to your left as you enter the room). Dark wooden panels, large wooden beams holding up a high ceiling and an abbey cum nunnary feel about the whole room.
I love this drinking establishment, even if the only beer you can have is the ’Rauchbeer’. It is a wonderful place to sit and drink the heavy, smoked, jet black brew, brought by a serving wench who was pleased I could order in German.
Fairly quiet for a Friday lunchtime, no locals in this area of the pub, they are all in the smaller bar to your left as you walk through the main entrance. Strang how they have left the best room for us Auslanders.
If on entering the building, you do not turn left or right, but carry on into the bowels of the place, an off sales window is on your right, there has in the past, been locals drinking here also, but not on this review visit.
This is the reason beer tourist come to Bamberg, do not miss it if you hit town!
| | madthom8 (52), Twickenham, England | | March 21, 2012 Went here a number of times on my two week stay in Bamberg. The beer is a big attraction and was very good except on my last visit when the regular rauchbier was strangely flat. Ate here three times, my favourite was the pork shoulders. Very fine place. | | edpeg (30), Berlin, Germany | | February 19, 2012 Nive place, and draucht Rauchbier from cask. Service little uptight. Disappointed that smoky Weizenbier was not from the cask but from bottle. The premises are very nice, already for their historical dimension.
| | lambic (16), Newton Poppleford, England | | February 13, 2012 Lots of tourists, but serving one of the all time great beers, a must visit when in Bamberg. | | Ernest (115), Boulder, Colorado | | December 26, 2011 Have been here 3 times, each time sitting in a different area...first time was many years ago, when it was so smoky inside (from people smoking cigarettes, I mean) that you couldn’t smell anything at all. This recent trip was MUCH more pleasant, thanks to the Bavarian smoking ban...cool old German decor and feel, with modern serving efficiency (albeit with the usual gruff manner)...the beer is in front of you before you even know it. You already know the Schlenkerla beer quality...it’s all about the smoked malt and not a whole lot else. They’re not the most complex Rauchbier in the world, but the smoked malt character itself is so meaty and rich that it doesn’t matter too much. And yep, the Märzen from the gravity cask is indeed a step up in quality from the bottles; not night and day like some suggest, but certainly softer and (of course) fresher. It definitely does not disappoint. | | TEJA (36), Stockholm, Sweden | | December 25, 2011 [ Updated March 16, 2012 ] A visit to Bamberg vitout a visit to Schlenkerla is a vaste of time. Mostly they just serve one beer, their own Rauchbier from cask, but it is one of the best beers in the world and it is at its best in ther own Biergarten. Service is usually fast ( we are in Germany so anythin else would be a suprice). The atomsphere is ok but we are lots of tourist. Good toilet facilities. Little hard benches to sit for more than 4 beers, but the good beer make it posible to stay another cuple of beers in the right company. | | BriSava (77), , Japan | | December 21, 2011 Area that is sacred to beer drinkers. Very nice atmosphere and cosy place.
In the morning, the beer is cheaper. | | SamGamgee (182), down the whirlpool, California | | December 19, 2011 One beer on draught is all you need when it’s rauchbier märzen from the barrel. A bit cramped but I was with a big group and we all managed to fit. Old, worn place. One of the most glorious beers in the world in its natural habitat. If you like smoke, this needs to be on your bucket list. Cheap as hell too. |
