| bruwery (21), Lowell, Michigan | | November 16, 2011 I used to frequent this place several times per year, but frankly got tired of paying for subpar beer. On more than one occasion, I encountered beers that clearly had sanitation issues. They’re not all bad, some are actually fairly good, but as a whole, this place doesn’t stack up against the other breweries in town.
They generally have 10 beers or so up, and the names they come up with for them are pretty cool, but for me, the beer itself doesn’t hold up under scrutiny.
The mug club has a really awesome feature. They have (or at least used to) two or three members only parties each year where everybody brings in food and beers are only a buck. Those were a nice perk and a good time.
The ambiance is great, it’s very much a regulars bar, but nobody’s unfriendly to strangers. It definitely has that hole-in-the-wall feel to it, which is a great thing in a bar.
Service was inconsistent. I found it frustrating to sit at the bar with an empty glass while the bartender yucked it up with the regulars. I shouldn’t have to flag the bartender when I’m sitting across the bar from him/her.
To the owner’s credit, he’s an engaging person and II never had service issues when he was behind the bar, but I question his choice of help.
There’s no kitchen, but you can bring in your grub, or have something delivered.
All-in-all, this would be a great place if they’d improve the beer. Until then, there’s too much other pressure for my beer dollar. | | Hudspart (26), Hudsonville, Michigan | | August 2, 2011 Not a bad little hang out. They typically have about 6-8 beers on tap and free popcorn. | | RudiNicole (77), Michigan | | June 24, 2011 Hit up Schmohz, as the 6th brewery in one day. We arrived about 15 mins before closing, but the bartender was more than willing to talk to us, and fill up a sampler. The place was mostly empty, except for 5 or so regulars at the bar. We let the bartender pick out our $5 sampler, and she even gave us an additional pour. All the beer were decent and drinkable. I wasn’t blown away, but I liked them, and I liked the feel and ambiance of Schmohz. It was a quick stop near midnight on a weeknight, but I think it would be a cool place to hang out with a group of friends and drink some beers. | Hollywoodt (8), Grand Rapids, Michigan does not count - explanation | | November 11, 2010 A little hole in the wall type of place. Not much decor, etc. Just kind of a place to have a beer or two, and hang out. Decent selection of beers. Of the two I had, one was not real great, and the other was fairly decent (stout, I think). | | milewide (22), Grand Rapids, Michigan | | March 18, 2010 Decent beers, and the styles show imagination. Food was very average. Service was fine. Routine decor. | | JaBier (68), Capital City, Ohio | | February 6, 2010 Sixth stop (2nd of day 2) on the Michigan trip. Hole in the wall little place that has a good selection of regulars. Really, everyone turned and stared at us when we walked in. Still, they’re a friendly crowd once you start talking. Beers are cheap (total was $7.50 for two samplers of 5-6 beers each), but you get what you pay for. A couple were infected, others were downright wrong and a few were mediocre. Didn’t try any food, just got in and got out. | | drunkysersose (11), Michigan | | April 19, 2009 Drive by Schmohz and go to the Hideout. If you are looking for a small brew joint of this type in Grand Rapids..... Hideout. | | esjaygee (204), Oak Creek, Wisconsin | | March 19, 2009 After leaving the disappointing Grand Rapids Brewing, I concluded my trek down Grand Rapids’ "beer street" at Schmohz. Much better. A sampler platter for 3.75, what a bargain. The beers ranged from pretty darn good to simply average, but overall there were enough offerings that would bring me back if in the area. Peanuts and popcorn were the food offerings, but that was fine with me since I was there to drink the beer. The place itself wasn’t very big and it wasn’t very crowded on the night I stopped in. Decent tunes were flowing and a pool table and dart boards were in the front of the bar. The bartender was friendly and seemed somewhat knowledgeable about their beers. | | Slabjacker (34), | | August 4, 2008 Nothing overly exciting in my opinion. The picture you see on this page is about all the place has to offer in terms of decor simple, uninteresting and almost homely - like someone’s basement, as another reviewer suggested. Compared to the other breweries I’d visited in the area, I didn’t find it as welcoming. A handful of locals surrounded the bar and the bartender was neither rude nor welcoming. Suffice it to say that I felt like an out-of-towner that didn’t belong. My friend and I sat at a table away from the locals and minded our own business. No one came to check on us or see if we wanted anything further. The beers were average in flavour (tried the sampler). Maybe it was a one-time experience but I left feeling unimpressed. I will compliment them on the variety on tap and the names of their brews - and decorative labels. | | mmmbeer (50), Austin, Texas | | July 22, 2008 (Visited 7-5-08) I visited this place shortly before I left MI in 2006 and was highly impressed. Two and a half years later after the original visit, it’s nice to know that things haven’t changed! The building is set in an old industrial park- I kind of like the setting. Service- bartender was a guy that lives in a neighboring town that I grew up in, so it was nice to catch up on all the local chatter. Selection- 11 taps, with 6’ers and growlers to go- so many good brews, so little time. Food- free popcorn and peanuts. Overall- a hidden gem in a state loaded with great beer options. Take the time to find it while in the state, you won’t be disappointed.
