| Westmeister (32), Atlanta, Georgia | | January 31, 2012 Only gets knocked for its selection due to the fact that they can’t serve that many different beers during the "tour". However, had a great time at a hell of a value. $10 for 8 half pours all while enjoying a Phish cover band on a beautiful day. They didn’t have anything too special the day I was there, but still great fun. | | beernovice39 (146), South Carolina | | May 28, 2011 Great college hangout, where were these places in 92? Restricted to two pints. Standard selection on my visit. | | NachlamSie (358), Tennessee | | November 21, 2010 [ Updated January 5, 2011 ] While there were no rarities on tap, there was a solid 6 beers available to choose from The ambiance is lively and fun. I like the beer garden outside as well as the interior tasting room. The tour was pretty fun, with some factoids revealed about Terrapin Beer Company. It’s 10 bucks for a glass and 8 tickets which can get you 8 half pours of brew. Great deal. I had such a fun time I’d love to come back and do it again. Next time I’ll bring some extra cash to purchase some of the really cool merchandise in the gift shop. They have some pretty bitchin’ swag. | PickettsCharge (1), does not count - explanation | | September 15, 2010 3 Points:
1. Almost perfect for what and where it is.
2. I love the value of this place.
3. Good standard selection and they often pull out special brews for you.
| wortandyeast (2), Winston-Salem, North Carolina does not count - explanation | | July 7, 2010 Terrapin’s public access is limited to its "tours" on afternoons Wednesday-Saturday. When the brewery is open to the public during these times, it DOES become more of a hangout than a "tour". A band plays at the brewery during each tour. When weather permits, the large outdoor space hosts the band, an additional bar serving samples, and several games of cornhole. The selection of beers varies greatly each time I visit, with probably about 6 or 7 offerings on average. Lately they have been pouring a Side Project and the current Georgia Theatre series beer in addition to year-round and seasonal offerings. Also pretty recently, a local vendor has been showing up (intermittently) to sell Terrapin-cooked brats, but I’ve yet to indulge in one. Ideally, all of this would occur at a taphouse or pub adjoined to the brewery, but due to GA law, a "tour" is the only way to allow public access. This unfortunately, seems to make the actual tour underwhelming. It is often difficult to hear the tour guide and, in my opinion, only appeals to those with an extremely basic knowledge of the brewing process. Most advanced or in-depth questions seem to remain unanswered or side-stepped. While I know that the tour guide may not be the person to ask about upcoming releases or other potentially-privileged information, a generally more in-depth tour would probably appeal to a wider audience (including those with little or no prior knowledge of brewing). I love my local brewery and love visiting and supporting the guys at Terrapin, but a more-established tour rather than something that seems slapped together would be much appreciated.
Note: Pint glasses with 8 tasting tickets are now $10 | | kiefdog (118), Tampa, Florida | | November 7, 2009 Visited while in Athens on business in February, 2009. Large warehouse type brewery with a separate merchandise area. A band was playing on this Friday night which made it rather difficult to talk to my friend. The tour was pretty brief and the young woman giving it didnt seem to know as much as she should about the brewing process. At any rate, it was worth the few minutes we spent on it. Nothing exceedingly unusual on draft this evening, and the place seemed like it was a college hangout more than anything else. We did have a great conversation with some other beers geeks in the merchandise area, but other than that, the experience was fairly mediocre. | | CheersMate (132), Fremont (Seattle), Washington | | August 1, 2009 Warehouse style setting, as most breweries are. Crowd is mainly UGA kids and some older adults. They didn’t have anything special on tap which kind of pissed me off. Well, they did have the Rye Pale Ale aged. The beer tour was WAY TOO short, and the place was loud. Although I do understand the brewing process rather well, I did want to hear about new beers in the works and release dates. Very close to Five Points Bottle Shop, which is awesome because I was able to make a pit stop there afterwards. Picked up a pretty nice t-shirt too. With Georgia breweries I am starting to think that if you have seen one you have seen them all! Terrapin is my favorite Georgia brewery, so it was nice to go, but I can’t imagine going back anytime soon. One last note, when I tipped the woman pouring my drink she literally gave me 1/4 of a pint. I was about to return it and say "I don’t think so sweetheart, try again", but didn’t want to be an ass. The people I didn’t tip were giving more than half a pint. | | markwise (124), North of Tampa, Florida | | March 11, 2009 Terrapin tour is interesting. Got there around starting time, people are very nice (all volunteer), and the beer is excellent. 8 bucks for 8-half pint pours. You get to keep the glass (cool glass, too). It’s not Terrapin’s fault that there are a bunch of obnoxious UGA kids who took the tour, too. Caught up with normal tour guide and she was cool as hell; talked beer for a while. Only the regular beers on tap, but Sunray is not available in FL. Big warehouse with lots of room. Nice place to visit one of the bastions of Southern Craft Beer. | | sebletitje (200), Enghien, Belgium | | December 14, 2008 Never regretted going to the Terrapin tour.
8dollars gets you 8 tickets and a to keep pint.
Monster beers cost 2 tickets. We had four people in our group and I ended with a lot of tickets, enjoying fresh Wake n Bake.
The overall place is just a brewery in a hangar with the Terrapin store.
This was the week of finals in Athens, and the place was filled with students, and a live band.
All people pouring drinks and doing the visit are volunteers.
None of the side project on tap. 4 beers on tap; 2 regular and 2 monster beers.
It is just an amazing place to visit for one of my top southeastern coast brewery. | | MtStateBeer (21), Hurricane, West Virginia | | June 2, 2008 Pretty nice brewery. It only costs $8 for a pint glass and 8 ’tickets’ that you use for drinks. One tickets gets you about a half of pint of the lower abv stuff. Two tickets got me a half pint of the Rye Squared. They also had the Rye, Golden, and India-style brown ale. Would’ve have liked to seen Big Hoppy monster or Substance Abuse...maybe next time. |
