This is a really cool place in a nice area of Birmingham. Their tap selection was top notch, and the food was very good. I would suggest this as a "must visit" for anyone in Birmingham interested in good beer.

A hodge podge sort of place with about 40 taps heavy on the locals. The bartenders seem to know their stuff, though the prices are a tad high. Great spot in Birmingham to grab a pint.

Located off of side street/back alley. It’s not a big place and even with a bigger room in the back seats fill up quickly. They have about 50 taps with 30 fixed and 20 or so that rotate. They had a nice mix of local and national craft. Crowd skews a little younger thanks typical for a craft beer Place skews younger because of its l proximity to UAB. Draft prices are high but that seems to be more to do with Alabama’s insanely high taxes on beer and liquor. Is this the best craft beer bar in Alabama? Probably.

Getting to this place is a pain, parking is always limited. If you are going to hang out in 5 points though, you should definitely stop by. Good selection and nice Ambiance. Gets crowded in the bar area very quickly.

Cool little place in southside 5-points. It’s pretty small and gets crowded, so get there early. Best selection in town, food is above average bar food, and ambiance is fantastic, even when the service is horribly slow....

I grew up in Birmingham and discovered craft beer a couple of years before the archaic beer laws were changed to allow beer over 6% abv. J Clyde quickly became the epicenter of the movement and within literally days they had an amazing selection of craft brews on tap and in the bottle, and they continue to lead the charge with the Free The Hops movement. The food is also excellent. The bartenders are extremely knowledgable and the owner is often around getting to know the patrons on slower days. My only complaint would be sometimes the wait staff are woefully slow and not as knowledgable, but this may have changed since I moved away. It’s still my go to place when I am in town to visit family.

Being somewhat new to beer, in particular craft beers and high gravity, I found out about The J Clyde and thought this would be the perfect place to start learning. We eased in the door late one Sunday afternoon to find just a handful of friendly people sitting around chatting. The bartender took my inexperience and my brief description of what I thougt I liked, and he ran with. He hand-picked a flight of beers that he thought I’d like. All 5 beers were different, some dark, some sweet, and even a high gravity thrown in. All 5 were excellent choices and fit my tastes well. We ordered their fried sour kraut balls to go along with the flight. The beer and the conversation started out good and only got better. Same goes for the bartender who kept coming back to slip me a sip of various other beers he thought I’d like. One J Clyde burger and two hours later, I had sampled 8-10 different beers, had some excellent food, met some super nice people including the nicest most beer knowledgeable bartender in B’ham, and indeed met my goal of learning about a handful of good beers. I’d recommend The J Clyde for every beer lover as they have one of the largest selections on tap in The Ham.

Tucked out of the way in downtown Birminham is this jewel. Laid back bar with very good food. Great local tap selection backed by an extensive bottle menu.

Extensive beer selection with lots of seasonals and special guests. Nice pub feel. They were out of brats and the "famous" burger I had was good but not exceptional. Build your own flight (pricing based on ABV) is very welcome. Will definitely return when in town.
