80 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 17/20 DuffMan (217) the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta | March 30, 2013 Parksy and I sunk a few here on my birthday. Unassuming one-room taphouse with a pool table at the back. I estimate 30-40 taps, all craft, with an excellent representation of local Montana product including two breweries that were new to me and two beers that were not even in the database. Friendly staff, excellent prices, clean lines, chillin’ vibe. I’d come back in a heartbeat. | 70 AMBIANCE 2/5 SERVICE 6/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 14/20 beernovice39 (196) Montana | December 20, 2012 Hole in the wall with 40-50 taps. Local and regional with a couple of Belgian and macros. Older sparse crowd at lunch time. Service needs work. | 76 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 16/20 Gueuzedude82 (13) Colorado | October 8, 2012 Had a great time here! Small, but solid tap list. Great prices, and good people. Definitely my top bar in Missoula. | 66 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 5/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 7/10 OVERALL 13/20 Braudog (655) Hampton, Virginia | July 8, 2012 Dropped by for just one beer on a hot summer night. It was still early so there wasn’t much of a crowd. The tap lineup was nice, especially for a weary traveler seeking a wide array of local/Montana beers all in one place. Place kinda has a dive atmosphere which I guess suits their regular clientele just fine. | 82 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 18/20 Savvy1982 (70) Lethbridge, Alberta | January 2, 2012 Came here with javit and crew, for his birthday. HUGE selection of local taps, as well as a respectable selection of other Western U.S. craft taps, nice to see Celebration on tap here. As was noted in the earlier review, this IS the local college hangout, so it’s packed, and loud, and boisterous. No food here, either. That said, if you went earlier in the day, you’d be hard pressed to find a better tap selection anywhere in Montana. | 86 AMBIANCE 3/5 SERVICE 9/10 SELECTION 13/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 18/20 Torontoblue (30) Edmonton, Alberta | October 9, 2011 A must visit when you’re in Missoula. The outside can be a bit off putting having to walk through a herd of smokers standing on the steps, but once you’re through the smoke the Rhino is a great sight. Huge well worn bar on the left, with 50 taps lined up behind, and a cask engine at the far end of the bar. Also, if you’re a whisky drinker, then you’ll be more than happy seeing the bottles on the back bar. Plenty of comfy barstools to ease you up to the bar, and plenty of tables and stools throughout the place. Staff were very friendly; listening to their banter with the locals was very comedic! Beer selection on the day I was there was fantastic, and there was a cask from Big Sky on too. Also thought it was a good touch in having 3 serving sizes of glasses, especially when there were a few high alcohol beers on offer (The Stoic, Perserverance, Mach 10 to name a few). Pricing is ridiculously good, as is the pricing of the single malt whisky’s. Great atmosphere, great people, great bar, great town. | 84 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 15/20 after4ever (213) Brier, Washington | September 18, 2011 A ridiculously successful effort on so many levels. You would expect that somewhere in western Montana--probably in many somewheres, you might expect--that someone would figure out how to make money running a bar. And they would get good at it. The Rhino is Exhibit A in the case for good business models in this town.
First up, stuff I don’t really care about: bacon vodka. Served in their already-legendary bloody marys, they make quite a combination. Other stuff I don’t care about: fancy multi-ingredient shots served for the delectation of UM sorority girls and other coeds. These rolled out by the trayful both times I was here. They were clearly made with care, though I didn’t listen for the names or look too closely at the ingredients.
What I do care about: the beer. dozens of taps, lined up in faucet after faucet all in two rows on the barback. Clean lines. Mainstream favorites as well as imports and tons of local and regional craft beers. Big beat-up bartop. Comfortable stools. Comfortable booths and tables. Peanut shells everywhere. Friendly people everywhere, students and townies alike. Pool and shuffleboard. No fights or aggro at all either time I was here. Very friendly bartenders who know their lineup pretty well.
This is the beer bar of choice in Missoula from what I can see. | 88 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 7/10 SELECTION 15/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 8/10 OVERALL 18/20 thefixer (10) , | February 28, 2011 Great selection. Get there early this place gets crazy at night. | 84 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE 8/10 SELECTION 12/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 17/20 HaydukeMT (4) Montana | January 28, 2011 Good selection- by far the best in Missoula. I love the atmosphere, pretty much unbeatable. | 92 AMBIANCE 4/5 SERVICE 10/10 SELECTION 14/15 FOOD N/A VALUE N/A OVERALL 18/20 curly (114) Kirkland, Washington | November 18, 2010| Updated February 13, 2011 Came here at about 4 o’clock. Not many people here but a shit load of good beer. There were two or three really nice beers here and many other great ones. The lady bartender said there are usually 2-3 new a week. I will be coming back many times.... Been back several times now. Always something new and awesome on tap. I can’t believe I came to Missoula about 20 times before I stopped in here. Now I will be stopping by every time I’m in town.....This place is awesome. I usually come in here between noon and 3. It is always very relaxed at these hours. The one time I was here on Friday at 5, it was a zoo. It seems like there are usually 2-4 new beers per week. |
