Visited the Vat & Fiddle last time I went to a Forest away game. Quick 5 minutes walk from the station so convenient for any of the City/County grounds or Trent Bridge. Place has always been busy as the 2 times I’ve been have been on a match day, friendly enough - no one looking for trouble, service held up well also. Castle Rock beers as you’d expect a good 8 or so available on my visits all in decent nick.

Castle Rock’s brewery tap.
The Vat and Fiddle has a great line up of Castle Rock beers (all in good condition, as you’d expect at the brewery tap) and a couple of guests. Unfortunately the pub itself feels a bit frayed at the edges although it’s pleasant enough and, as others have said, very handy for the station. There’s a visitor centre next door and live music on Sundays. (Visited 16 July 2012).

Location is good, near the railway station. Good selection of taps. Quiet. Some customers on Tuesday 12 o’clock. Local and a bit shabby. Could visit again.

The Vat & Fiddle should be brilliant; it’s Castle Rock’s brewery tap, so it should be the jewel in their crown. But it comes off as a bit shabby and lacking in atmosphere. The beer is always in top condition - the usual Castle Rock range plus some decent guests - so if that’s all you’re interested in, you won’t be disappointed. But for central Nottingham Castle Rock pubs, I’d go for the Lincolnshire Poacher or the Kean’s Head.

Just a 2-minute walk down the train station. very convenient spot for the pub that hosts what may very well be the best range of cask ales in town. Obviously lots of Castle Rock which is a good thing, but the guests featured for instance a 6.5% strong ale when I was there, which is rare in August. Nice view on the sunset from the outdoor terrace. A must in Nottingham.

Castle Rock pub which is very handy for the station and often the first or last port of call for me when in Nottingham. Scooped Hop Back Mighty White on my last visit here which was a special brewed for Salisbury City supporters to celebrate their FA Cup clashes with Nottingham Forest. Salisbury were actually in town on the evening too so that was a nice touch to put that beer on for them.

Next door to the Castle Rock brewery so it’s almost a brewery tap. A single room pub with expansion plans afoot - a new eating area and rooms looking into the brewery are planned.

Good range of Castle Rock regulars and specials are well kept. Interesting guests from a wide range of microbrewers. Solid selection of continental bottles.

Simple decor, plain but clean. Small outside drinking area. Toilets are being improved as part of the rebuilding plans.
Only a few minutes walk from Nottingham rail station so an ideal last call on any Notts crawl - or first call depending on how thirsty you are!
