A cosy and well-kept little pub on the other side of the city walls. It’s a Bateman’s Brewery pub but with a very good range of guest ales from breweries like Ossett, Dark Star, Brass Castle, Great Heck, Wharfebank added by a few ciders. The pub was the winner of the York branch of CAMRA’s Pub of the last year. Music from the Smiths, Runrig and Altered Images during our stay. Friendly service. One of the best on our pub crawl in York, 26.01.2013.

Visited the 22/1-2013, on the Jorvik Trail. Older, large multiroom citypub just outside the city wall, very cosy atmosphere og lovely guests.. Friendly staff, beers in good condition, on the nigth we were there 6 of the beers on tap was new to us :-) We came on a tuesday, and a jam session was going on, great entertainment :-) The pub has rooms available as well. Fore sure a pub to re-visit :-)

An unpretentious local with nine interesting hand pumps. The Waggon and Horses is a Batemans pub but this isn’t particularly obvious as when we visited on a Saturday evening there were only a couple of Batemans beers alongside others from various smaller local breweries. The bar dominates the main room and they take the beer seriously here. Each hand pump was labelled with a little blackboard giving its style, alcohol content and price. I also noticed a Surly sign over the bar but don’t know what the connection is. At the side of the bar there’s a hot plate from which they serve warm pies and peas. There was live music in a room to the left of the front door and lots of pork pie hats in evidence! The two rooms at the back, one of them like a cosy library in a country house, were full to bursting so there was a nice buzz to the place. (Visited 25 February 2012).
