| emtrexx (11), Milford, Connecticut | | September 26, 2011 I really like this place. To some it might be small and claustrophobic especially as the night goes on and people file in but I found it to be manageable. Definitely draws a hipster crowd that may or may not rub you the wrong way but definitely NO fist pumpers (a bonus when in Jersey). The bar can be difficult to get to but well worth it. So many options to choose from you’ll be happy you had that little extra time to make up your decision. | | gsmitty80 (153), Washington DC | | June 23, 2011 Stopped in here on a trip with my GF and her sister. Had a very nice time. They have a pretty local and very good beer list on tap. We didn’t have any food. Met some nice people and the service was good. We were actually given shots of good whiskey on the house. Highly recommended. | WIldboer (1), New Jersey does not count - explanation | | June 14, 2011 I live less than 5 minutes from the Shep, it’s a great little bar with an amazing selection. The one downside is that it tends to draw a slightly pretentious crowd, not that it matters if you’re with your own friends. | | koopa (13), , New Jersey | | May 28, 2010 [ Updated June 12, 2010 ] The Shepherd and the Knucklehead is a 10 minute drive from my home and right by the University I attended, yet I don’t visit it often. Since it is tiny and so close to the University, come late night it is always packed with kids. Some are beer geeks, but most are typical College Students.
They have an electronic dartboard, board games, a few nice booth style tables, and a bar w/ 24 taps. The management knows more about good beer than any other bar in the immediate area, but I wouldn’t go as far as to call them experts.
Service is fine. Darius (sp?) is a nice guy and the other bar tenders get the job done sufficiently.
Selection: Again, better than most joints in the area but fairly "commercial craft" offerings for the most part.
Overall its worth the trip if you live within 20-30 minutes of Wayne, NJ and don’t have other favorite haunts in that close of a distance.

Little expensive, but definitely a decent selection of beers to drink but you may have already had them. Nice service when dead or busy. | | njmoons (14), New Jersey | | August 26, 2009 Friendly, Beer Focussed, Great Beer Selection (that rotates), great music on the jukebox, beer savvy staff.
Pretty much everything I want in a bar. | | lowgun1212 (13), Carlstadt, New Jersey | | June 29, 2009 Nice solid beer bar in the middle of the north jersey beer desert. super friendly staff, solid selection, and a nice vibe. a little hippyish on the odd night but otherwise a good range of people. RECENTLY RENOVATED for much needed more space. big improvement | NJBeerman013 (9), Trenton, New Jersey does not count - explanation | | May 15, 2009 Great little bar, with only a top end selection of imports and micros. Great atmosphere and service. | | box986 (10), | | June 23, 2008 This was a great find. Only Andy’s in Bogota rivals the craft beer selection for a NJ bar. Relaxing place with very comfortable bar seats and friendly staff, good selection in the juke box. A cask option would be nice. Just a nightmare to get there, traveling through the slums of Paterson is no fun. | | BiddleBrau (58), Fort Washington, Pennsylvania | | June 9, 2008 [ Updated January 8, 2009 ] My type of place. I heard it gets crowded on weekends but on a Sunday afternoon it was quiet. Very tiny so it won’t take much to amp it up. Decent selection and the bartender was friendly. If they rotate which I assume they do frequently, I know I’ve found a good place to visit frequently. Their recent update to the interior has been a nice upgrade. |
