17 reviews for Calhoun’s Atop Bearden Hill
| sebletitje (78), Tampa, Florida | | July 26, 2009 Visited their Calhoun’s by the River location.
Nice atmosphere outside with a good view on TN river.
Food was great, loved their smoked ribs.
Served free samples in 6oz glass.
Another place that is part of a restaurant chain. Beer was good but not spectacular.
A nice place to visit in a wonderful setting. | | lithy (93), Knoxville, Tennessee | | June 30, 2009 Usually has the full SMB lineup plus the seasonal and the nitrot stout available as well as bottles to go. If you are in Knoxville, this is the one to go to. Food is the same as any other Calhoun’s which is pretty good. | BeerBaby (7), , Tennessee does not count - explanation | | May 8, 2009 [ Updated May 9, 2009 ] Good local restaurant and brewery. Above the average. Brew master is very nice. Their beer Cherokee Red, I am very fond of. They have growlers to go, but be prepared to drink it in a day or two. Food is good and portions are of good size. We have had beer club meetings here and found them to be quite accommodating. Good place to eat and drink. | | Tmoney99 (254), Cincinnati, Ohio | | August 31, 2007 Easy to find location on Kingston Pike next to interstate. Clean corporate inside with wood bar and tables. Brewing operations behind bar. Freindly service with good knowledge of selection of 7 taps that are Smoky Mountian brews. All beers average drinkable with good selection of styles. Good food menu and the Naked Wings are half price at happy hour and very good flavor. I enjoyed the visit. | | tronraner (100), Seymour, Tennessee | | July 8, 2007 This is the other brewing facility for the Smoky Mountain Brewery, and happens to also be a barbecue place. Beer selection is typical micro stuff, food is decent. They’ll sell bottles to go, too. A lot of the brewing equipment is out in the open, which makes for an interesting setting. Definitely go there during happy hour. Everything is ridiculously cheap. Good place. | | Dansting (114), Overland Park, Kansas | | June 29, 2007 I went here with a group of about 10, and we were seated pretty quickly for a Friday night. Place was clean and filled with the smell of barbeque. The food was really good, and the beers were satisfying. Unfortunately, they didn’t have any beer to go, which was a disappointment, but definitely worth stopping at for the food and beer if in Knoxville. | | lovemyipas (12), sw burbs, Illinois | | June 12, 2007 i agree with all of the raters on this page b-b-q wise it is ok to good. beer could have a better selection, more of a selection, and better made beers. service is kind of goofy and the ribs and pulled pork are there best dishes. ate on the terrace which was nice and they have three bars on the whole lot. overall i would say it is just above average i give it an ok-good. | | nearbeer (98), Knoxville, Tennessee | | January 30, 2007 [ Updated October 30, 2009 ] This is a good place for food, but not beer. The micros have been very inconsistent, I believe due to higher throughput than space and equipment allows, making for a lack of product maturation most times. This is especially true at this location, where the brew equipment is located. There are actually about 5-6 restaurants in the area under the same ownership, all of which receive brews from this one. Have to agree with Cornelius Suttree that the selection is tilted toward the light lagers. They also are nothing special, seemingly made to try to please the industrial Duff/Fudd crowd here in East TN - but you gotta stay in business, I understand that. Velles Helles is supposed to be an award winner, but I have had about two good ones in ten tries. Thunder Road, Tuckaleechee Porter and Black Bear Ale are all OK, but they usually are out of two of the three (on draft). Winter warmer seasonal is nice if you can get it before its gone. Food is good-to-excellent as previously mentioned, especially the barbecue or ribs, but service is spotty. Appears to be college-student staff that have other things on their mind, and are annoyed when a customer intrudes, especially at the River location, right across from campus and Neyland Stadium. Best thing about the beer at this place is $2 house pints at happy hour (from 4 to close). | | decaturstevo (59), decatur, Tennessee | | April 22, 2006 Good selection of beers. Nice cozy bar area that is not so large that the bartenders can’t keep up. The best happy hour of any place I’ve ever been. Every beer I’ve had so far has been very good. I can’t wait to go back. Nice place. | | awebster (10), Knoxville, Tennessee | | October 30, 2005 The barbeque is awesome, but their beers are just as good. I love their microbrews. Try the Black Bear Ale, and the Tuckaleechee Porter. |
