RateBeer Brew Tour Guide's Comments
Decent selection on the wall with a nice relaxed atmosphere. The fish and chips are excellent and go perfectly with several of their beers. Definitely a place you may want to start the night out.

ansermadide (9), Kyle, Texas does not count - explanation | | April 28, 2008 Decent, but seemingly short line of taps. I was hoping for more of a selection, but for an English pub it was expectedly and predominantly English. Totally cool. What they had on tap and in bottle was great, a lovely selection. Had a pitcher of Fullers ESB with a plate of fish & chips... not a bad place to hang out and get some grub. Small enough with a good ambiance that I’d prefer it over Opal Divines when looking for food & brew. Love the patio, and the people. Good people know good pubs. | | BeerBelcher (89), Milwaukee, Wisconsin | | September 29, 2007 I stopped in for lunch during a recent visit to Austin, and came back later that evening for some beers. Other than Ginger Man, this seems like the place to be in town for a good beer selection with a great selection on tap and in bottles.
When I stopped for lunch things were a bit slow, and the bartender and I chatted a good bit about business. He was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The pub’s selection is wide, but being from out of town I would’ve preferred to see more beers I couldn’t get back home.
I had lunch, but I couldn’t find much I was interested in on the menu. I had a Philly Cheese-steak sandwich, and I wasn’t too impressed with it. Maybe I chose poorly. One block to the east was a Mexican place I wish I had gone to instead. Still, as a beer place, I think it would be a mistake to skip this place when in Austin. | | Zinister (41), Houston, Texas | | June 14, 2007 Nice Austin pub with fun people and good beer. Nice tap selection and decent bottles. | | Scubatrip (20), Winston-Salem, North Carolina | | June 4, 2006 Very relaxed, cosy atmosphere with the usual bar games and the decor of a British pub. They have about 40 taps, plus another dozen bottles that include a saison and some Belgians. I didn’t have any food, so I can’t comment on that. I wouldn’t expect much from the bartenders, but there is a pretty nice selection. I’d call it a good find on my first day in the city. | | Walt (184), Chicago, Illinois | | January 24, 2006 The bartender was an idiot...a total idiot, so we went to the patio where the waitress was friendly and knowledgable so the mediocre score is reflective of obth as an average...great selection and they are on e of the only good beer places that has weekday daytime hours... | | julrey (22), Indianapolis, Indiana | | December 9, 2005 With 40ish taps of mostly British imports, the Dog & Duck is one of the more authentic English pubs in Austin. Whereas Fado and BD Riley’s go for more of a designer Britpub feel, the Dog & Duck with it’s copper ceilings and plenitude of dart boards is more akin to what I would expect to find in the average English neighborhood. The menu favors Brit fare such as bangers and mash and the like and also strives sucessfully for authenticity. This bar is often packed with a college aged crowd as it’s a mere 5-6 blocks from the University of Texas campus. They throw a pretty lively St Patrick’s Day celebration every year that’s more of a block party than anything. If it gets too crowded inside there are always a number of wooden picnic tables out on the patio. | | acrdz (538), Boulder, Colorado | | February 22, 2005 Near the State Capital and Texas Chili Parlor so we stopped when we were in that part of town. Has a lot of outdoor seatings, both under a cover and without. Inside it’s a typical pub feel with a small bar. Decent tap list but it didn’t look like they had anything that Gingerman did not. If I were local I would probably go here often in the hot summer... and it’s dog friendly. | | fly (163), austin, Tejas, | | February 2, 2004 Okay, not sure who added this one, but it needs to have TV and cigars checked. They also have dart board(s?) and pinball, so maybe games as well. I haven't hung out here in ages, but I have spent days here. If the tradition continues you can expect the cheap pints on pint night to have the place packed and many Saturday and Sunday afternoons are sleepy, making it a place I can take my kids to for a peaceful pint and lunch. They should also get credit as being one of the first here with a real pub feel and a good selection on the taps. I hope this hold and would doubt that it has changed vastly. |
