I have been impressed that you can brew such a good beer with very rudimentary brew equipment. The beer is really good and the garage ambiente is great. This brewery has a great potential.

Visited twice now. Once about 18 months ago and once a couple weeks ago after picking up some BA Speedway at Alesmith.

The place is literally walking distance from AleSmith, about .7 miles. Leave the car somewhere and walk off those Speedway calories. Just make sure you have the address written down somewhere as it’s in the back of the complex and not visible at all from the street. The tasting room has grown quite a bit since they opened. It used to be crammed into one small commercial warehouse but now is spread across two. Soon they’ll have a new 30 bbl brewhouse up and running in another area but will keep this one open as a tasting room and barrel storage.

The beers have greatly improved since they opened. Back then it was really just homebrew but now it’s not bad. Give it a try. They’re starting to bottle some things too but the bottles are expensive.

Service is pretty good and it’s a comfortable feel. They dont serve food and I didnt see a food truck either time I was there. No restaurants in walking distance.

Fairly small tasting room in an industrial park, not too far away from Alesmith. Just a few people working the bar. Very friendly staff and prices were okay as far as the beers go. They offer a $10 flight which includes a pint glass to keep.

Another industrial park brewery in SD with a small tap room and a nice selection of house beers. They have a damn reasonable taster set that sends you home with a pint glass and all for a decent price. Cool spot.

Alot of tasty beers and great IPA the service is beyond amazing definetly coming back here.

In my opinion the best kept secret in San Diego. The beer here is RIDICULOUS. SDPA is one of the best beers in existence. Everything else, from their cream ale to a super tasty witte bear is excellent as well. They are a nano brewery, so they may run out of they are pouring. Service is knowledgable and attentive, as they guys behind the counter own the place.

Glad I went. Like everyone has commented, the place is a little hard to find, as it is located in a small garage in an industrial park. However, it is worth seeking out. On the day I visited, March, 22, Hess was offering tasters of each of the seven beers they had on tap, and a glass for 12 dollars. All of the beers proved to be great, and extremely fresh. All of the people there were laid back from the bartender and other workers to the customers. They even had a black lab there who liked to fetch a tennis ball. Also noteworthy is the fact that they are making the beer right in front of you in the tasting room.

Hess is located only a couple of minutes drive away from Alesmith. A true nano-brewery in every aspect - it’s pretty much a garage! This really is just one step from home brewing. There were 5 taps on offer when we visited. All beers were good quality and interesting. Great value. The guy working there was very knowledgeable and friendly. A really cool place to hang out - reminds me of a small version of the Kernel brewery in London. An essential visit if you are in the area.

Nice little tasting room that spills into the parking lot in many cases. The brewery is so small that it can be wheeled to the side. Love coming for events and the German 0.5 liter Hess glasses are very nice. Hess makes some pretty good beers considering the circumstances and I can’t wait to see what he does in a proper brewery.

We decided to head here after hitting Alesmith. We drove around a little maze of commercial building when we finally stumbled upon Hess. The place is a single garage door with a room that is about 15x20. This it he entire brewery (there is a bathroom though). We were standing next to the brew kettle and mash tun during our stay. The people were very nice and beers weer decent. We did the tasting flight, which was an awesome deal (5 tastes, 1 Hess souvenir glass for $10). Got a good deal on a 1 liter growler too. Cool setup.
