Small place in a strip mall setting, homebrew shop in front, and essentially a homebrew set-up near the back, plus a small bar. The beers were tasty enough for what they were, and there was a barrel aged sour that was very interesting. They’ll be moving soon to Culpeper to take over a seven bbl system, so they should get much more traffic than they have now. Worth watching.

A homebrew shop with an attached nanobrewery. The location’s unfortunate - it’s right off of 29 in a random strip mall 12 miles north of Charlottesville. It’s exactly the kind of place that doesn’t get foot traffic. Probably for this reason, I’ve never visited while another customer’s been there. The beers range from below-average to quite nice. A number of styles are usually represented. The major problem with this place is consistency, and I hope they continue to dial-in their efforts. The service is keen, attentive. The prices are very cheap. Overall, worth a stop if you’re traveling between DC and Charlottesville.

Was excited when I heard about this place opening and saw they had a great variety on tap right out the door. It’s an 1 1/2 drive for me, but had a beautiful saturday with nothing to do so i headed out there. The brewery (real small operation) is tucked i nthe back with an unassuming little bar and blank tap handles. I Was the only person there to drink (there’s a homebrew shop in the same building) but I was attended to nicely. The 6 or 7 beers on tap ranged from interesting but rough to fantastic. Real friendly staff, good prices, and no food on site but easy access nearby.

This is a little nanobrewery located inside the Fermentation Trap homebrew store. The address is Barboursville, but it’s more in Ruckersville right on US29 about 10-12 miles North of Charlottesville. The homebrew store has been rearranged to make way for a bunch of tables in the center and there is a small bar. In my book, breweries always get a point bump for ambience is there is a brewery dog, and that certainly is the case here. Teddy is the dog’s name, and since this brewery’s beers are named after dogs, I imagine Teddy will be getting his own beer at some point soon. Kenny, the owner and brewer, was very friendly to me, but since I know him already I guess it’s more important to point out he was also friendly to other guests as well. The assistant brewer, whose name escapes me, was also very friendly. There are 8 taps, one of which is dedicated to root beer and one of which was empty on my visit. Of the six beers I tried, I was fairly impressed, as they were quite good. Maybe a bit rough around the edges but very promising and already good. Certainly better than other nano-breweries I’ve visited in this state were just a week after opening. Prices are decent, with samplers and pints available and growlers available on some selections. No food, but people are welcome to bring in food, and there I think there’s a pizza joint in the same shopping center. I was eager to visit this place and my expectations were exceeded.
