72 /100 Vínbúðin Akureyri (Beer Store) HOLABRAUT 16 Really good Vinbuðin as you would expect from a town the size of Akureyri. Most of the beers were in a cooled of section of the store, but the beer range might have outgrown it’s originally intended space, since there was an additional section outside the cooled part. They had lots of Icelandic micros from different brewers and even a couple of new Faroese beers. I walked out the store with 50+ new beers. |
80 /100 Vínbúðin Akureyri (Beer Store) HOLABRAUT 16 Walking distance to the cruise port, with a good selection of local and regional beers. Fair pricing too, based on the remote location. Singles available. The help was very knowledgeable. Definitely worth a stop. |
54 /100 R5 Beer Lounge (Bar) RÁÐHÚSTORG 5 Easily the best bar in town. 8 beers on tap, mostly craft, with several form Borg. They also had a bunch of bottles in the fridge, including some rarer heavy Borg beers, but you will pay out the ass for them (2000+ ISK). Bartender was pretty nonchalant/cold (typical Icelandic service). Fun place to chill and have a good beer. Worth a stop if in Iceland. |
38 /100 Ölstofa Akureyrar (Bar) KAUPVANGSSTRÆTI 23 For an Einstök bar, this was pretty lame. 7 taps, with 4 mainstay Einstök beers; they do flights, but since I'd had them all before, it was not very enticing. The others were Viking beers, which are even less interesting. Bartender wasn't friendly, bordering on being a dick. Wasn't impressed with this place. |
38 /100 Backpackers Café (Bar) HAFNARSTRÆTI 98 Came here for some dinner, as they had some vegan options for us. Taplist had 7 beers, but only 1 craft (an uninteresting Borg beer). Happy hour will give you $6-7 beers; otherwise, it's more like $10-12. Not really worth a stop for beer if this experience was representative. |
70 /100 R5 Beer Lounge (Bar) RÁÐHÚSTORG 5 Short stop during Amureyri stop on teh Ring Road travel. Right in the "centre", at the en of the pedestrian street. Modern pub vide, with a couple of tap beers - not the best selection, but definitely the best in town (and much wider). Icelandic prices as everywhere else. Wouldn't make a detour for it, perhaps not even stop by if looking for something special. But if craving for some beer in Akureyri - this is the place. |
76 /100 R5 Beer Lounge (Bar) RÁÐHÚSTORG 5 Visited on a Monday evening. Cool corner bar right by the main square in Akureyri. Seating is in a smaller room, casual coffee shop vibe. Order at the small bar. Beer selection is 8 Icelandic beers on draft and 20 or so can and bottle. Selection with helpful, providing information on several of the beers. My AirBNB was directly above this bar, so it worked out perfect. 76 = *** (Worth the visit, must for locals, and visitors with time) I only use the total score, not the component parts. |
58 /100 Bautinn (Restaurant) HAFNARSTRÆTI 92 First time visitor to Iceland. Arrived to Akureyri towards the afternoon or early evening Monday July 9, 2018. We only had the one evening planned, so just walked around and checked out a few of the places available on ratebeer. Ended up here for our late dinner. Ate whale and guillemot (both taste heave of liver by the way), found a bottle each to drink. Not a beer place or pub by any means, but a nice centrally located restaurant that may have some beers you haven't head. Do not seek out for ticks, but check out if hungry. |
82 /100 R5 Beer Lounge (Bar) RÁÐHÚSTORG 5 First time visitor to Iceland. Arrived to Akureyri towards the afternoon or early evening Monday July 9, 2018. We only had the one evening planned, so just walked around and checked out a few of the places available on ratebeer. After the huge disappointment at Ölstofa Akureyrar, we ended up here are was received a lot better. Nice place, only 6 taps, but we found two beers we wanted to sample. Only seemed to sell full pours, but when asking if possible to get smaller ones since we were driving the day after, was no problem at all to get a smaller pour each. Nice service, a place I'd happily go back to. |
68 /100 Backpackers Café (Bar) HAFNARSTRÆTI 98 First time visitor to Iceland. Arrived to Akureyri towards the afternoon or early evening Monday July 9, 2018. We only had the one evening planned, so just walked around and checked out a few of the places available on ratebeer. This was our first stop after setting in to our guesthouse. Quite crowded. Very nice attentive service with good knowledge. They had a "house beer" called Backpackers Special, but the barman told us it was the exact same beer as Sumargull by Ölgerðin Egill Skallagrímsson. We had a beer each before heading out. I can see myself going back here, perhaps also staying at the hostel, if ever in town again. |
16 /100 Ölstofa Akureyrar (Bar) KAUPVANGSSTRÆTI 23 Visited July 9, 2018. Copy of my answer to the bar/brewery staff on why I gave them a "1 star review" on Facebook: Well to sort of sum up what happened. Two of us walked in after reading on the website for the bar that the staff was happy to help to pour flights. We walked in and asked what was available on flights, there were 5 Einstök beers. However, the two of us needed to purchase to flight. We stated we wanted to think about it then, since both of us were driving the day after and wanted to keep our alcohol consumption down, and asked if she could help the other couple next to us first. This couple, also two persons, wanted a flight, they were told they had to get two. Instead they ended up buying one full glass for the one person that was drinking beer. If the minimum of flights sold is 2, then why didn't the person tending the bar tell that other couple "hey these two are also after a flight, perhaps you can share? Anyhow, after she came back to us we said we didn't want two flights, so what was the available pour sizes for the draft beers we were interested in? The minimum size was 40 cl, so we'd then need to select only one of them to keep at the alcohol level per person we wanted to stay within at this place. After reading another answer from you, I now see that perhaps the two flights per person was to be able to not have half full bottles standing? We never got this information, just that there was a minimum of two. Had we heard that, we might have reacted differently, perhaps asking the other couple close to us if they were at all interested in trying to build up a flight with us. But it just felt from the information we had and the way it was stated, that had we been 4 people, the minimum number of flights available would have been 4, i.e. one per person. Whenever I travel somewhere I haven't been and is unlikely to see in the near future again, I try to get flights if available, since it gives me the opportunity to sample more of the local beers and still not drink to much alcohol. Had you not so proudly stated on your website that you had flights, or even if flights had not been available and the draft pour size had been only 40 cl, then we might have ended up buying one from tap or one bottle, but it was the whole attitude from the staff and minimum information, together with mainly shrugging of shoulders that put us of from staying. I have working with craft brewing and bar tending, many beer festival and countless of beer tastings. If you wish to have someone sample our beer from bottle, then you need to take the risk of ending the night with half full bottles. You never try to sell the customer more to save for yourself. In Sweden it is even illegal to state you need to buy more alcohol. Perhaps if the bottles are the problem, state "these three from tap you may get as sample size, unfortunately we need to include the full price of a bottle in your flight and charge for that s well". If that was the case, we could have had three sample sizes from tap and one full bottle, and just might have gone for that. Instead we leave very disappointed. It can very well be a case of too little information to the staff working, but the service and information we got was enough for us to highly recommend others to stay away, or at least come prepared for what we experienced. I'd also very much recommend you to add to your website with the information of flights what the minimum amount is, to reduce the risk for this happening again. As well as stating when asked about flights, why you need to serve more than the customer ask for. For ratebeer: If you don't care about flights and half pours, the tap selection is OK for where it is, the bottles not so interesting. |
56 /100 Ölstofa Akureyrar (Bar) KAUPVANGSSTRÆTI 23 Small bar with a small selection, prices are icelandic. dont recommend this one. oh yeah no happy hour as i recall. |
70 /100 Bláa Kannan (Restaurant) HAFNARSTRÆTI 96 Small selection of beer, prices are icelandic, happy hour is just half a litler of lager... there are better bars. |
80 /100 Vínbúðin Akureyri (Beer Store) HOLABRAUT 16 Only place to buy beer to go with you. Selection wasnt bad somewhat the same maybe bit less than Kringlunni Vinbudin in Reykjavik. And since its a Vinbudin, prices are cheaper than buying it at a bar... |
74 /100 Backpackers Café (Bar) HAFNARSTRÆTI 98 Bar that was packed with people, small seat left. Selection isnt that great, some local beers from iceland. Prices are icelandic... not bad. |
84 /100 R5 Beer Lounge (Bar) RÁÐHÚSTORG 5 Interesting interior, selection was some icelandic beers from borg etc, and lot of Mikkeler, some other countries too. Prices are high like always in Iceland, but go for the happy hour. Had the Garun 19.1 for 1000 krona from tap (was -50%)
Best bar in Akureyri if you ask me. |
62 /100 Vínbúðin Akureyri (Beer Store) HOLABRAUT 16 A nice selection, could be better based on the size of the town. |
64 /100 Backpackers Café (Bar) HAFNARSTRÆTI 98 Nice traveler hangout with a surprising selection of local beers. A nice place in Akureyri but by no means a beer bar |
56 /100 Vínbúðin Akureyri (Beer Store) HOLABRAUT 16 What is there to say...no other places to buy beer. |
60 /100 Bláa Kannan (Restaurant) HAFNARSTRÆTI 96 NIce little coffee house. The focus is not on the beer, but there are still some nice brands there. |
58 /100 Bláa Kannan (Restaurant) HAFNARSTRÆTI 96 Well yes, it might actually be that this is the best beer place in Iceland’s second city and capital of brewing, though Götubarinn may have been better for Viking and Einstök beers, if only I could have found it! |
60 /100 Bláa Kannan (Restaurant) HAFNARSTRÆTI 96 Visited on a Saturday evening in June ’09.
A local guy we met on the ring road tipped us off that we might find a dark beer in here, as opposed to the standard lagers!
He wasn’t wrong - unfortunately we drank them out of bottles of Urvals stout by our second round!
The place had a nice vibe, relaxing, kind of coffee shop in the morning meets bar in the evening. Seemed to be largely tourists in there.
Service was fine they were quite apologetic that they’d got no more stout for us!
Having found only Viking and Gull in the other venues in town this was indeed the oasis in the desert! |
