RexKL Bar (Bar)
REXKL, 80 JALAN SULTAN
“Not in the same league as it was in the early days. It’s a bar that doesn’t really go out of its way to get anything decent in. When they do it doesn’t last. If you are at RexKL and want beer with your food, then it’s fine, but don’t go out of your way to come here for inspiring beers as you are unlikely to find them.“

68 /100 GROUND FLOOR, 152, PETALING STREET, CITY CENTRE
“Keep walking along Petaling Street, through the market and the bar is on your left. It’s a rather large, nicely decorated, modern looking place with lots of space but seating for just 30. They have 14 taps and around 30 bottles / cans, but on my first visit, there were no tap beers available. Very helpful and attentive service. Reasonable prices. Food is available. A nice place, but they need to up their game beer wise.“

“Opened in December 2023, a small modern place in Plaza Bantai with seating for around 30 people. There is a small outside area at the front. Plenty of room for dogs that are not only tolerated but encouraged. Kura is a dog herself! They have six taps and around 50 cans and bottles. Working WiFi and helpful staff. Awesome hot dogs are available too with a number of specials. The best way to get here is the MRT. The bar is just 13 minutes walk from Semantan station.“

78 /100 L3-14B, AVENUE K SHOPPING MALL
“Located in the fancy 6th floor of Avenue K mall, in front of Samba Churrasco. The place is swanky, well decorated , dark and modern. Service was attentive. 8 taps of imports, no locals. Huge fridge bank with close to 100 bottles , including some 3F; the prices are premium given the distance and taxes but still acceptable (around 30 to 45 rm per can, and up to 250 rm for the 3F). Menu of local malay and izakaya. Flight of 5 for 85 rm, a tad pricey. The beers did show some age/travel damage, but nothing too bad.“

“This is my second visit after a long hiatus. Place is located at the base of an appartment complex in Changkat. Cool vibes, pleasant semi tropical decor meets British pub. 7 beers are on tap with a good 50+ bottles in the fridge, decent selection of imports. Menu of local Malay with some western dishes. They do have a happy hour, 3 drafts for 60 rm. Flight of 3 beers fro 42 rm. A solid stop in KL.“

60 /100 G.04, GROUND FLOOR, COSWAY GUESTHOUSE, 88, JALAN RAJA CHULAN
“As far as beer places go, Cathy’s Bar should not be on RateBeer as it’s not a place for beer geeks! They serve two beers, Guinness and Tiger, albeit from an “antique” Tiger tap. So why is it on here? Well because it’s a real bar! Yes a bar and that’s not something that you find very often here in Asia. It’s like my “Cheers” in KL, the place where everybody knows your name. It even looks like a British pub and reminds me a little of the Hong Kong Bar up in Penang. There is always someone in here to talk to. If you are sitting on your own, Mike, the owner, will come and talk to you so you are never alone. No WiFi, but they have great food. So no snide comments please about this not being worthy of an entry on RateBeer. It’s up here for a good reason, but that reason isn’t beer! If it counts for anything though, the Guinness is by far the best I’ve ever had in Malaysia!“

84 /100 UNIT P10-1 & P10-2, BAMBOO HILLS
“Nice bar in beautiful Bamboo Hills complex with nice man made brook with waterfalls. Happy to try the excellent Paperkite beers, the only microbrewery in KL and one of only two microbreweries in the country. The pizza I had was very good. It is well worth coming here if you like good beer that is locally made.“

66 /100 UNIT P10-1 & P10-2, BAMBOO HILLS
“Opened December 2022 at the Bamboo Hills development north of KL. Just like all the outlets at Bamboo Hills, this is a very posh, modern and expensively decorated place. The food was excellent and not overly costly. The Asian dishes were particularly tasty and good value. They have four Paperkite beers plus a Stella Artois and Erdinger. Flights are available. Working WiFi and friendly staff. Grab is realistically the only way to reach this place. The ride from the city centre takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Well worth your time to come here. Quite a unique experience here in Malaysia. Booking is recommended.“

Brewmaster (Restaurant)
21-G, JALAN RADIN BAGUS 6, BANDAR BARU SRI PETALING
“A German style restaurant in downtown Sri Petaling. Opened late 2022. Quite a modern looking place with lots of wood. They are the only place at the time of writing that serves the three Starker beers, which would be be main reason for coming here. The food is actually rather good and very reasonably priced, especially for members. The Bukit Jalil LRT station is the nearest train station but even that is quite a walk. Other than that it’s time for a Grab car. Worth coming if you want the three rare Malaysian ticks, but I’m sure you will enjoy the food too. Working WiFi and friendly service.“

70 /100 ISETAN THE JAPAN STORE, G-232 & 233, GROUND FLOOR, THE GARDENS MALL, MID VALLEY CITY
“The second Takumi Craft Beer Bar to open in KL. Situated on the third floor of the Isetan department store at The Gardens Mall. The whole store, including Takumi is very plush and upmarket. There is seating for 12 people around 6 small tables with 6 additional leather seats at the marble bar. There are four taps and around 25 cans and bottles. Food can be ordered at other outlets and eaten at Takumi. Despite the location, prices are cheaper than in the city and if you have an Isetan card, you also get loyalty points! Getting here from the city centre is fairly easy, either with a Grab or LRT. I’d recommend the LRT, especially during the rush hour. The nearest station is Abdullah Hukum and you can walk straight out of the station into the mall. A great location for a cool beer or two and it gives you a reason to visit this mall over any one of the many other malls in this crazy shopping city!“

“A super modern looking “disco” pub aimed perhaps at the younger sports fan. It’s really kinda cool tho if the brightly coloured LED lighting is your thing. They have three taps, all macro (Heineken Tiger and Guinness) with a wide selection of around 200 craft cans and bottles from around the world. Pricing is keen compared to city centre bars. Working WiFi. The food here is amazing and super super cheap for a bar. You can get decent meal for RM 6 and if Octopus is your thing, you are in for a treat! It’s a 20 minute ride from the city centre in a Grab Car. It’s just 17 minutes walk from the nearest MRT station too which is Taman Midah. They have taken a chance on Craft Beer and I wish them every success!“

78 /100 L3-14B, AVENUE K SHOPPING MALL
“Finally, a Farmers Bar in downtown KL. It’s located on the third floor of the Avenue K shopping mall, right next door to the Twin Towers. The KLCC LRT station is just a short walk away. They have 8 taps and around 300 bottles / cans at super keen prices and way cheaper than any other local bars. Lots of wood and concrete with power points along the bar and all around the centrally located fish pond, so you can keep your phone nicely topped up while in here. Working WiFi and friendly staff. Easily the best bar in the city right now and should be the first stop off for any traveler.“

D5-G4-3, PUBLIKA, SOLARIS DUTAMAS NO. 1, JALAN DUTAMAS 1,
“Visited in April 2022. Located in a busy nightlife area. Difficult to find due to being multi-level and lack of signage. Small and cramped. Four Modern Madness beers on tap - owner had no interest to discuss "brewing", but otherwise friendly and efficient service. Quite a few bottles available - mostly from Australia and US.“

“Well, what a place! The only reason that this place is on here is because they describe themselves as a Beer Garden. A few beery friends have been here, so felt kinda duped when I first came here to find there was no beer other than Tiger, Heineken, Guinness and Edelweiss! They have had craft previously. One hopes it will return. All was not lost though as this is a truly spectacular place. Almost like a speakeasy. It’s like an old Chinese antique shop cum bar and restaurant. It’s a real experience. It’s only frequented by the Chinese community and me it seems! You only hear mandarin spoken in here. The menu is surprisingly mainly western, with a focus on tapas. There are around 15 Chinese dishes too. It’s walkable from Bukit Bintang, but unless you are a hardy adventurous sort, I would not recommend it. There are underpasses en-route that are not pleasant after it’s been raining. Actually, they are not pleasant before it’s rained either! Don’t be like me. Take a Grab! Ok, so there is no real beer here, but there is an awesome whisky collection and it’s a superb experience that any visitor to the city has to see! It’s actually quite a huge place, so make sure you walk all the way through from the front to the back. I drink Tiger when I’m here. No regrets! They have wifi and the service is amazing.“

76 /100 1 JALAN RADIN ANUM 1, BANDAR BARU SRI PETALING
“The second Beer Bank to open in KL and a vast improvement on the original indoor venue. This place has a huge, very pleasant, seated outdoor area for easily 100+ people. There are lots of huge fans to keep you cool and of course it’s covered for when it rains … as it often does in Malaysia. There is a small bar food menu along with a good choice of snacks. Surprisingly fast WiFi which is ideal as my 4G wasn’t great in this area. The beer fridges are inside and have around 200+ different beers from around the world. The best selection in Malaysia I have to say along with their city centre location. It’s a 30 minute Grab ride to get here. Public transport is possible. It’s 10 stops from Masjid Jamek on the Sri Petaling LRT line. Get off at Bukit Jalil and walk for 15 minutes. The Google location isn’t accurate, but it is here! Well worth coming here. The beer selection is the best there is and it’s a very pleasant location too.“

“Opened on May Day, 2021. The city centre branch of Paus, so all the beers served here will be the same as Paus and Monster and Beer. The place looks lovely from the front and is located in and up and coming trendy F&B location, not far from the bright lights of Changkat. The decoration is clean and functional. It reminded me of my old school with the terracotta floor tiles. The bar is located on the ground floor with additional seating upstairs. They have two taps and around 100 cans and bottles. Friendly, helpful staff and working WiFi. It’s 10 minutes walk from Changkat, so don’t bother with a Grab, however you need to cross the wide and busy Jalan Pudu, so be careful. Behind the Swiss Garden Residence. It will be interesting to see how things develop here when the tourists return.“

74 /100 20, JALAN 28/70A, DESA SRI HARTAMAS
“Opened in April 2021. A stylish, well appointed, modern, well lit bar in the happening Sri Hartamas district of Kuala Lumpur. Lots of wood and brick give the place a nice feel during the afternoon or the evening. There is a small terrace out front if you prefer a non air-conditioned environment. No taps here, but they have around 150 bottles and cans. If the beer hits Malaysian shores, you will most likely find it here. Food is served, but I’ve never tried it. Friendly owner and staff. Working WiFi. Really well worth the journey from the city centre and Sri Hartamas is a cool place to be anyway. There is no public transport close by, so the only realistic option for getting here is a Grab car for a couple of Euros from the City centre. You could walk it in 3 hours, but I’d take a 20 minute Grab ride 😀“

“An awesome cafe in a quiet side street in the city centre of Kuala Lumpur. The food here is outstanding. A real treat. This is Malay Chinese food at it's best. Simple but quirky decor. They have a lovely small terrace area at the front for those people that don't like an air conditioned environment. Super friendly staff who will do their best to make your visit memorable. On the beer front they typically have around 10 different bottles and cans of quality choices from around the world. No Tiger in here! Not too far to walk from Bukit Bintang, but maybe it's best to take a Grab!“

Dream Art Lamp Cafe (Restaurant)
16-1, JLN. RADIN ANUM 1, SRI PETALING
“This isn’t likely to be a place you are ever going to stumble across by accident! It doubles up as a lamp store (the owner makes the lamps) and cafe that sells beer, but what an awesome little place it is. The beer selection is variable. Prices are reasonable for Malaysia. Super friendly owner. Getting here is easy on the Sri Petaling LRT line, with just a 10 minute walk from Bukit Jalil station. Sri Petaling is a pretty cool place too which has lots of nice places to eat. If you feel like something different, then come to Sri Petaling!“

“Ok so when you boil it all down its a cool little cafe / restaurant that happens to have a fridge of well picked (I hate the word ‘curated’) beers. But.....service good....food good.....beer prices very good and might be the sharpest in town? Was surprised to see 4 offerings from Hop Nation I must say. A vigorous 10 min walk from Taps so easy to include in a KL crawl. Not super ‘crafty’ but close to the mono-rail so no excuses. Treat it as dinner plus a few quality beers, not a bar visit.“

“In the basement of the Isetan The Japan Store, which itself is in the Lot 10 shopping mall. The whole basement is a giant Japanese grocery store / dining area, with a section devoted to beer, sake and other alcohol. 4 beers on tap here, 3 of which were generic Hitachino Nest beers, and the other a generic Brewdog. Flights of 3 available for 50 RM, which I might've indulged if the beers were more interesting. There's one small fridge of Japanese and other craft beers. Worth a look.“

Ales & Lagers (Beer Store)
D5-G4-3, PUBLIKA, SOLARIS DUTAMAS NO. 1, JALAN DUTAMAS 1,
“Small place that is easy to miss from the outside. GoogleMaps will take you to the place it’s located in, but there’s no sign for Ales & Lagers out front (only in the back), so either walk through the place or walk around to the back. Informal but comfortable, warehouse feel with plenty of seating. 3 taps, 2 of which were Modern Madness taps — on my visit they had the Mosaic SIPA and Black IPA for 12 and 18 RM, respectively, very reasonable for Malaysian beer pricing. The third tap was Rogue Dead Guy. No samples or smaller pours. They also have a fridge and shelf of bottles, most of which I saw at Beer Bank or elsewhere. Worth the trek out here with Grab to tick the Modern Madness beers.“

“A 20-minute walk from KLCC, just outside the centre -- it's a little less chaotic out here. Cute little place that specializes in coffee and a range of different cuisines (including vegan/vegetarian stuff) and a couple fridges of bottles (drafts are only macro swill and Guinness). Prices are a fraction lower here than some of the beer places in the centre, but still expensive by Western standards (25-35 RM for a bottle). Very friendly service, and they take credit card. Not really a beer destination, but then almost nowhere is in KL, so it might be worth a look.“

“I’m the heart of centre, across the street from Beer Bank, this is a modern bar with a dozen or so taps. Nothing much local, since there is nothing local - just guest taps from all over, including Australia, Young Master, Canada, etc. No small pours, just one size for everything for Scandinavian prices -$10-12 for a glass. They have a few nice bottles too, but they are even more prohibitively expensive: often $20-40 a bottle. Friendly staff. If you’re in KL, it’s worth a stop.“

“Right across the street from Taps, it’s easy to miss though. As jmgreenuk said in his review, you have to enter a grocery store - you’ll see a sign for Beer Bank as you enter and again as you head to the back of the store. No taps, but the bottle selection is truly impressive here. 15 fridges and an open cooler area lined with beers from all over: lots from Belgium, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, and the US. Prices are exorbitant - lucky to find anything under 25-30 RM, but this is Malaysia. You can grab beers for here or to go. Must visit in KL.“

“Well this is interesting. Modern bar meets a wall of fridges. About 24 doors of fridge space so in theory 1000+ lines of stock but there is a chunk of macro beer so perhaps 450 proper and quality beer. This is a deep range for any bar and easily makes up for the lack of taps. Pricing good for KL. I really did like it and a crime not to visit as it's only a 2 minute walk from Taps.“

“Bottle and can beer bar tucked away in the central business district of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, behind a small supermarket. It does not have a separate entrance to the outside, so you would have to go through the supermarket (which is open till really late anyway) to get in. Once inside, the walls of fridges holding more than 200 different bottles and cans of beer (80% or more craft) greet you. Bias seems to be towards European brewers including Belgium ales, and far fewer North Americans represented. Service is straightforward, pick what you want to drink and your glass ware from the fridges, and pay at the central counter, where you can order from a small selection of bar snacks as well. Various tables of differing sizes and lighting cater for groups of all sizes, including two tables for beer pong! There are also many screen playing a variety of sports and movies, so certainly something for every group and individual. Possible shortcomings are the lack of taps, and North American brews.“

“A sizeable restaurant, coffee bar with air-conditioned indoor seating for around 80 and a smaller outdoor patio. More of a coffee shop than even a restaurant. Great coffee though and superb, very reasonably priced food. They have a decent selection of the more commonly found beers at slightly lower prices than you will find elsewhere. Working Wi-Fi and friendly helpful staff. Not a major beer destination but a nice watering hole if you are in the area. If coming from the city then a Grab car is advisable. “The Bottle Houz has both a bottle shop and a bar next door, but only the bottle shop is worth a visit and then only for a cheap night. This is rapidly becoming the "Cheap Charlies" of Kuala Lumpur. They sell canned beer at supermarket prices and even less than the local convenience stores, but they have tables on the patio area outside where you can stand and drink your beer. In this part of the world this is as cheap as it gets and the place is rapidly becoming popular with backpackers. The beer selection isn't inspiring, but they do have one or two beers that I have not seen elsewhere in KL.“

“A rather large warehouse style indoor bar with lots of wood / metal furniture and concrete floors. No taps here, just wall to wall fridges with around 200 different beers. Plenty of TV’s around the place if you want to catch the game. Friendly service and Wi-Fi which is rather key as the 4G reception in the whole area was almost none-existent for me. Somewhat pricey for some beers but this is Malaysia after all. Beer Bank is on the ground floor and to reach it you have to walk through the Selections supermarket at the front to the right hand side of the Wisma Lim Foo Yong building. There is a small sign but it’s easy to miss. Just keep walking until you reach the back of the building. It’s very central but for anyone coming here via public transport, the Raja Chulan Monorail stop is about 200m away. Well worth spending some time here in the beer wilderness that is KL. I’m sure there is a tick here for everyone with plenty of beers from the UK, Belgium, Australia, the US, Hong Kong and France. A real beer bar which will attract a younger crowd, but I willl be back. If you want food you can buy it in the supermarket and eat it here. If you bring your own beer there is a corkage charge.“

It has a modern colonial style interior with an indoor air conditioned area and a nice, sizeable patio area at the front for those that would prefer the natural heat. Bavarian Bierhaus (Restaurant)

“Well, even for a German Beer Bar in Asia, this place is really quite poor. The decor is fine and looks semi authentic apart from the light brown laminate floor which didn’t match the dark brown wooden furniture at all. The menu caters for all tastes and there are a few traditional Bavarian dishes on there too. The beer choice here was quite disappointing though and they really need to improve on that. There were just a couple of German beers here in addition to all the locally brewed mass produced rubbish. Having said that my Paulaner Hefeweizen was actually quite decent despite taking 10 minutes to pour. The music here didn’t suit the place at all. There was no attempt to create a German Beer House environment I don’t want to be listening to disco and electronic music while devouring my pork knuckle!! They have a cool indoor area that seats around 40 and an outdoor patio area with room for another 20. Friendly staff though and working Wi-Fi. The happy hour offers are decent as are the two pint offers from 8pm onwards. It’s the only “German Beerhouse” in KL city centre at the time of writing and they are lucky there is no competition. It’s really not worth the effort to come I am sad to say. If you want to make the effort, it’s best to approach from the back entrance to KLCC. You can get there along the Bintang Walk from Bukit Bintang, or through convention centre itself from Suria KLCC. From the back entrance to KLCC, cross the road in front of the HSBC Amanah branch. Walk down the alleyway to the left of the bank and after about 100m you will reach the Bavarian Bierhaus on your right.“

“Jason’s is a sizeable supermarket located in the Bangsar Shopping Centre. They had precisely 52 different beers. I counted them! Most are Australian and Belgian plus the local Asian pale lagers. Nothing too exciting really. All you will find are what the Malaysian importers are bringing in at the time. A little on the pricey side, but not excessively so. I can’t say it’s worth a special journey to come here, but if you come, it’s just a short walk from the Pusat Bandar Damansara MRT station. I surprisingly found a few ticks here. Maybe you will too!“
