“Large place that seems generic for the wetherspoons areas. My first stop in the UK for craft beer, so still found a few basic ticks. Their menu advertizes a few Welsh breweries but they don't actually have any of them. Just the mostly macro taps. Service not great.“

We (me, Loz and Isobel) visited The Punch House on Saturday 2nd January 2016. It is located at the top end of the main shopping street in Monmouth where it widens into Agincourt Square, the pub sits on a corner looking back down on the town.

It is a large white building an old coaching inn I understand, that dates back to 1769, in fact it now occupies what was two pubs but an expansion in the 1990’s saw the other pub The Bull incorporated into this. You enter via the main door in the square and from looking at the Punch this is the door that would always have been part of the original Punch House public house. The bar is ahead and to the LH side where it opens out to form a square with seating here. Further seating to the RH side of the bar and back beyond, and more seating and dining areas are off to the RH side in what would have been the other pub, you step down into this area. This place was geared up towards food (we ate, it was pretty good and reasonably priced)

The beer choice was rather limited, I only saw two beers on cask handpump these were Rev James and Beerdface from Brains micro plant. We had the latter and it was in extremely good nick and a decent beer.

It was a popular place, we were lucky to get a table, but service was brisk, staff were very friendly. I quite liked it here, I seem to recall the prices being reasonable also. Despite the limited beer choice I would come here again.“

“August 2013 - The Nags Head and improved a lot over the last couple of years. The pub has two guessed ales, your regular nitro taps and local cider. Nice old pub with character. Worth a visit when in Monmouth.“

“Restored grand hotel over looking Agincourt Sq in Monmouth. Now owned and run by JD Weatherspoons. A rather big pub with a nice spacious patio in the summer. Lots of nooks and crannies to hide and drink in. The food is your typical Weatherspoons grub. Cheap and does the job. The beer is rotated every week so you will always have some new beers to try. There is always a beer from a local brewery, and a selection of ales from the rest of the UK.“

“Spent quite a bit of time in this oub during the lead up to gethinbeer’s wedding Large old converted inn (still has some attached rooms). Lots of small rooms sprouting out from a larger central bar area. Food is tasty and cheap, but it Isn’t going to blow your mind or anything. The beers were all very well kept though, which was pretty much the main reason for visiting anyway.“

“Excellent pub for the rugby. As Geth_in_beer said, the pub is limited to Brains beers, but I don’t see this as a problem, lovely pint, clean glass, bar staff that know how to pour a pint. Food is good, new menu to with a great selection. Also a restaurant if people want to escape the bar atmosphere.“

“Good traditional pub in the centre of Monmouth town. The pub itself is a very old building in the town square, it used to be two pubs but now is one. The selection of beers is pretty much limited to Brains. But a good selection of Brains on offer and I have to say, are well looked after. Worth a visit for the food also, great carvery on a Sunday.“
