80 /100 Witchcraft (Bar) LG2-02, BUILDING 1, 458 MADANG ROAD Came here on 10.11.2023. A new beer bar, quite centrally located in the Huangpu district. Seems their brewery is somewhere outside of the city. Excellent beers, a lot of IPA’s and sour beers. Brand and logo are excellent too. Surprisingly the bar was completely empty on a Friday night. One of the best beer spots in the city. |
60 /100 8 Pints (Lingang Aegean Sea branch) (Restaurant) ROOM 1005, BUILDING 5, 666 XIALI ROAD Came here on 10.11.2023. Located 75 km from city centre Shanghai on the Pudong side. 8 pints is a beer chain with at least 10 other branches in the area. Beers were quite good. Junk food (Pizza, Fries) were mediocre. Not a bad place but not worth a detour. |
74 /100 209 MAOMING BEI LU (NEAR WEIHAI LU) Mid-sized, modern brewpub with low and high tables, plus tanks behind the bar. 16 own beers on tap, didn‘t see any guests. Can get a flight but it is fixed and these are the standard, and therefore less interesting beers. Best beers (not on the flight) were the Head in the Cloud DIPA and the Angel Goose white stout. Servers didn‘t speak much English but were friendly. Good food, American style bar fare. Worth a look, unless you know brand from other places. |
80 /100 KWAH CENTRE 2/F, 1028 HUAIHAI MIDDLE ROAD (NEAR DONGHU ROAD) XUHUI DISTRICT Super nice gastro pub / beer bar inside the K-Wah centre. Lots of dark wood, leather sofas and mostly high tables. Didn’t eat but the menu looked really good. Good service from the guy that greeted me when I walked in, happy to answer any questions and give recommendations. No flights, all pours are one size (350 mls I think) but you can try anything that you want to. Affiliated with the Boxing Cat Brewery, most beers either brewed here on the premises or by CBC. Really liked the special Imperial Hazy IPA. Definitely worth a look for a beer or two, or if you want to eat. |
28 /100 20 DONGHU ROAD Was rather disappointed with this place. It looks great and the food looked really good but the beer selection was quite poor. They had more macros on than own beers and then the flagship brew 'Mad Dragon' was not even on and was replaced by Goose Island IPA. The beer that I did have, Donghu White IPA was fairly poor. I would suggest not to bother unless you want to go there for food. |
90 /100 Ming Ri Brewing Shanghai (Bar) 1ST FLOOR, NO 356 XINZHA ROAD, HUANGPU DISTRICT Came across this place by accident, when walking from the Beer Lady place round the corner to the subway. One of the guys there saw me reading the beer list outside and came out to talk to me. Offered to let me try a few beers which I did, and liked, so I promised to come back later when I had more time. Glad I did. Nice modern beer bar with good food, good beer and great service. I had two taster trays and found all of the beers to be solid. My favorites were the Osmanthus Flower Braggot, Burning Fire Wee Heavy and the Hazy Dream IPA. Prices were good for the pours and also for the takeout cans. My favorite beer location of my Shanghai trip. A must visit! |
34 /100 Acemyshi (Restaurant) 3 F, 96 SQUARE, NO 796 DONGFANG ROAD Came here on 10.7.2023. Was sitting in a Spanish restaurant in Pudong and saw a big sign: CRAFTBEER on the 3rd floor and indeed there is a brewery or at least tanks at the entrance. Strange place. You must order a kind of Japanese barbecue to get a beer. Beer quality is not good. The IPA did not match the style at all. Food did not look appealing. |
58 /100 Ming Ri Brewing Shanghai (Bar) 1ST FLOOR, NO 356 XINZHA ROAD, HUANGPU DISTRICT Came here on 6.6.2023. I like Ming Ri beers very much. At least 10 of them on tap. The ones I had were all excellent. The bar layout and decoration is poor. Service was mainly busy killing bugs. Ming Ri beers deserve a better location. |
74 /100 233 Import Beer Bar (Bar) XUANHUA ROAD NO. 233 DILOU, CHANGNING Came here on 6.6.2023. Nice beer bar focusing on international beers. Beers from Hudson Valley, Evil Twin and Epic on tap. Armageddon from Epic cost 70 RMB! Nice interior with a larger bar on the backside. Nowadays one of the better beer places in Shanghai. |
84 /100 Commune Reserve (Restaurant) YUYUAN ROAD NO.1107 (JIANGSU ROAD SUBWAY STATION ENTRANCE & EXIT 6 PEDESTRIAN 360 METERS), Came here on 11.2.2023. The Stone owned bar closed 2020 and it seems a new owner has taken over and runs it exactly the same way. Nothing has changed, which is great. Even the merchandising corner with Stone Shanghai T-Shirts still does exist. Beer selection and quality are outstanding and food good too. Is still one of the best beer location in Shanghai although not owned by Stone anymore. |
72 /100 627 JIANGPU ROAD / 935 HUIMIN ROAD, YANGPU DISTRICT Came here on 12.2.2023. Small brew pub off the beaten track. Bar with 8 taps and brew house next door. Visited only by locals on a Sunday evening. Had the Cheerfly Hazy IPA and the Double IPA. Especially the first one was very tasty. Authentic placeI would visit again. |
84 /100 Beer Thief (Bar) BUILDING 118, NO. 2199 SUICHANXI RD, BAOSHAN DISTRICT Came here on 12.2.2023. Located very much in the north of Shanghai, off the beaten track. Very authentic bar for locals. All is written in Chinese. Taps from 3-4 Chinese breweries, one of them is the excellent Mingri brewing company. Most of the beers quite strong but overall a very good selection of IPA’s, Stouts, Saisons and Sour beers. A few quite good bottle beers you can find here as well. They also serve good coffee. One of my favourite places in Shanghai especially since Jacky’s beer nest has closed. |
80 /100 JIAOZHOU ROAD 273 LONG NO.60 BLOCK 3 ROOM 101, JING'AN Came here on 11.2.2023. Nice small beer bar with a merchandising area on the first floor. Decoration very modern and light. Beers were all great but expensive. Definitely one of the better beer places in Shanghai. |
72 /100 Brewdog Shanghai (Bar) WEIHAI ROAD NO.228 SHANGHAI CHINA MERCHANTS PLAZA SOUTH BUILDING F F1, JING'AN SHANGHAI CH Came here on 11.2.2023. This Brewdog bar opened just before Covid and is located in a shopping mall (not easy to find). Was quite empty on a Saturday afternoon. Good beer list including at least 5 guest beers Beer, food and service was good. The place is missing a bit the Brewdog vibe |
70 /100 82 FU XING XI LU, XU HUI QU Visited on a mid-afternoon. Almost empty. Friendly staff. Small outside garden, very quiet. Decent food selection. 8 of the top brewery beers on tap, some more bottles. |
100 /100 66 XIAN FENG STREET Shanghai Brew House is exactly that, a place for craft brews.
12 house crafted beers, two of which are continually rotating, ensuring a beer style for everyone. The first 12 beer series for the grand opening is based on a unique interpretation of the Chinese zodiac. Shanghai Brew House has created beer that has been connected to zodiac history. As the China craft beer culture grows, so too will the innovative spirit and story of Shanghai Brew House.

62 /100 Dream Brewing Jingniang (Restaurant) JULU LU 758 BLOCK 3 FLOOR 3 AND 4 Came here on 29.7.2019. They brew their beers in Anhui and sell them in different places in Shanghai. This one is a restaurant on 2 floors. Top floor is a roof terrace, which can be rented for private events. Lower floor also has an outside area. Around 12 beers on tap. All are absolute drinkable. Unfortunately they have mainly western food. Nowadays, after the InBev take over of Boxing Cat and Jacky closing down, one of the better choices. |
68 /100 253 HUANGPI ROAD Not a brewpub. 8 taps, half local of small/young Shanghai craft brewers. Serving flights of 5. Big Fridge with many imports including bottle logic and other US hyped breweries. Staff and service is good, some know English. Somehow the beers I selected weren’t much good. |
70 /100 KERRY HOTEL, NO.1388 HUA MU ROAD, PUDONG Hotel bar/brewpub. Both outdoor and indoor sitting, pub food and live band. Serves paddles of 7 of their beers, most of them are ok, nothing outstanding. Worth a visit if you’re in this side of Shanghai. |
8 /100 519-521 FUXING MIDDLE RD HUANGPU, Note: This location is closed for renovation. |
84 /100 82 FU XING XI LU, XU HUI QU Super friendly staff, beer flights of 6, nice atmosphere, nice food. |
8 /100 #124, BLOCK 7, LIFE HUB@JINQIAO, 3611 ZHANGYANG RD, PUDONG This bar does not exist at this location. I was told by a local resident that it closed about eighteen months ago. (I have had to give it a rating to allow me to save - it should be zero) |
74 /100 519-521 FUXING MIDDLE RD HUANGPU, Nice little place about a 10 minute walk from the train station we used. Right across from a very nice park. Very hospitable staff, though it was hard at times to know who our waiter was. They also served my flight disorganized without indicating what beer was what, but the server was eventually able to rearrange it for me in order. We sat outside but saw the entire inside, really nice place. Some TVs playing sports downstairs at the bar. The streetside was nice, with heaters that we didn't need. Food was downright awesome. I think my wife's mac and cheese was the best I've ever had. My portabella sandwich was also probably the best I've had (several vegetarian options). Beers were only alright, unfortunately. There were six BC beers, so that made the flight easy. Also nice they include the 10% beer in the flight (a way-too-sweet creme brulee stout). Best in the group was a sort-of-IPA, which I got another glass of. Also, the beer isn't cheap but the happy hour lasts till 8pm which is nice. My flight was ~$12 with happy hour, would be ~$16 without. |
68.5714285714 /100 Beer Lady (Hai Fu Convenience Shop) (Beer Store) 455 FAHUAZHEN ROAD 5 minutes walk from Metro stop Jiaotong university, many foreigners there. Another chain store in West Yan’An Rd. Really good place to stop by for a refresh, you have to do homework in advance, otherwise you would be lost before the shelf, some beers taste...unbelievable... |
84 /100 Much Beer (Beer Store) 200 DANSHUI LU Nice small pub with a helpful owner, great choice on Chinese and foreign craft beers. A visit worth. |
68 /100 20 DONGHU ROAD One of the only places serving draught local beers still open after Budweiser bought them all up and closed them down. It's in the foreigner area, so busy, noisy, and the waiting staff have their own territory American style. Dissapointed that they didnt have anything exciting outside the commercial selection, just standard beer done well enough. |
62 /100 209 MAOMING BEI LU (NEAR WEIHAI LU) Came here on 6.1.2017. Very professional 2 floors brew pub, located close to Nanjing Lu. 9 beers on tap including specialities as a sour/barrel beer and a guest beer from Shangri La. Monday to Friday they have a 38 RMB/pint Happy Hour. Long bar in front of the brewhouse and the fermentation tanks. A merchandising shop at the entrance. I am not a big fan of their beers and the local beers are still not on the right level, but I have to admit this place is quite good although it has a corporate soul. |
58 /100 The Hop Project (Bar) 372 DAGU LU Came here on 12.11.2017. Small bar with 10 taps, mainly Brew Dog beers. I assume this is a Brew Dog Pub. Beers were tapped too cold and I did not even recognize the Punk IPA. Service (non Chinese) was not attentive at all, busy talking to each other. This place can be missed, untypical for Brew Dog. |
56 /100 FUXING ROAD NO.531 Came here 11.11.2017. This brand new beer restaurant is located next to Sinan Mansion Boxing Cat. Liked the beers, they had 4 on tap (tasted the pale and the amber ale), but did not feel comfortable here. The lay out is weird and the service is all over the place. Seems they have Japanese food, which I did not taste. |
76 /100 KERRY HOTEL, NO.1388 HUA MU ROAD, PUDONG Brewpub in the Kerry Hotel. Nice atmosphere and a selection of about six of their beers. Food looks good and reasonable value. Some of the beer is very good, and worth trying out,and always a soccer game on TV. Easy to find from Huamu Road Metro station at the end of Line 7. |
76 /100 FUXING ROAD NO.531 Just opened 2 days ago with a great "buy one get one free" deal for their draft beers. Tried their IPA and Wheat. The Wheat was excellent. Great location just a short stroll from the Boxing Cat Brewery |
70 /100 519-521 FUXING MIDDLE RD HUANGPU, Nice relaxed bar in a great area. The TKO IPA is interesting and the Trippel Threat is dangerously strong at 8.2% ABV. Next to this bar a short stroll down on 531 FuXing road is the Hiachino Mansion brewery |
74 /100 District (Bar) 284 YUYUAN ROAD Nice small brew pub with 5-6 beers in tap. Small fridge with a few exotic bottles. |
90 /100 World of Beer - Shanghai (Bar) 85 FUMIN ROAD Great selection of beers, sports on TV, good food and great service. Tank 7 both on bottle and tap and several decent IPA's in the 15-20 tap selection. Definitely a great place to pop in for an afternoon pint or two. The location is also great with several other craft brew pubs in the vicinity |
60 /100 Just Cool (Beer Store) 291 PANYU LU Just Cool is a neighbourhood bottle shop that’s popular for its pizza and cheap bottled beer. It’s best to nab a seat out front on the patio as inside has a dingy basement vibe. Similar selection to the other bottled beer stores found around Shanghai. Service can be pretty surly at times but if you’re after cheap Belgian ales it’s tolerable. Can easily hit this enroute to the Beer Lady. Closest metro stop:- Jiaotong University. |
70 /100 The Rooster (Bar) 455 SHANXI BEI LU The Rooster is a fun hangout a few doors down from Sumerian Coffee Roasters and Dogtown. Drinking spills out onto the street and it’s a good place to meet expats (if you really want to?). There’s a couple of Boxing Cat taps and the rest rotate with usually US imported brews. Bottle range in bar fridge also. Full food menu available. Closest metro stop:- West Nanjing Road. |
50 /100 Foam Heaven superBARket (Bar) 390 DAGU LU On the same street and rather close to the Hop Project on Dagu Lu. Hard to miss, it’s a big place with an inviting terrace and usually busy since it’s popular with the locals. Don’t be fooled by the name, this is a proper bar/restaurant that features a wall of cooler space full of bottled beer that can also be found in all the other bottled beer establishments in Shanghai :-p. Popular with the younger crowd getting their drink on so evenings can be hectic but fun if you’re involved. Food menu available. Sports are televised here. Closest metro stop:- West Nanjing Road. |
42 /100 Beergrdn (Restaurant) 183 JIAZHOU LU This review is for the beer selection. I didn’t partake in dining on my visit. Funky bistro slash diner inspired venue on the ground floor of the URBN Hotel. Attentive staff but the restaurant had few patrons this particular evening. Very boring draft selection and as Schlenkerla noted there’s two ’house’ beers but no info given or known by staff. It’s not a place that’s geared towards folks wanting good beer with their meal. Closest metro:- Jing’an Temple. |
52 /100 Bites & Brews (Bar) 399 JIAOZHOU LU Cheap and cheerful neighbourhood sandwich shop that also has beer. A fridge of mostly Belgian ales but also a scattering of UK & US. Two draft lines also (Vedett and La Chouffe on my visit). Lovely terrace out front. Don’t go in expecting much but it’s a cool little hangout with cheap beer. Closest metro stop:- Changping Road. |
50 /100 Craft Beer Depot 3.0 (Bar) ROOM 109, NO. 283 JIANGUOXI ROAD Also known as Brew Bear Loft. It boasts 30 taps which no doubt there is, however it’s too much hard work just to actually receive a glass of beer in front of you. There’s issues with massively foamy beers pouring from tap, which comes as no surprise since the tapped kegs are stored above the bar on display in what looks like a non chilled space. The staff really struggle which is no fault of their own, it’s a terrible draft setup with lack of experienced bar people here. Best to stick with the bottled beer which isn’t saying much as like elsewhere around Shanghai expect knackered grey market imports. A positive is that the venue itself is quite nicely designed and tucked away off the main Jianguo Xi Road so it’s a pleasant spot for a quiet drink. I would like to say it’s got potential but man, it’s gonna take some work. Closest metro stop:- Jiashan Road. |
42 /100 Bottoms Up (Beer Store) 1088 WUDING LU Small bottle shop with four draft lines. The likes of Chimay and Vedett on tap. A few chillers with the usual US and Belgian imports, mostly grey. Small number of Chinese micros. There’s minimal seating inside but a few tables and chairs have been thrown out street side. Service was poor since the lady was more interested looking at Wechat on her phone than doing anything else, which to be fair is often the normal level of service you get in China. Closest metro stop:- Changping Road. |
76 /100 The Hop Project (Bar) 372 DAGU LU This is the reincarnated Hop Project after the original Yongkang Lu location closure last year. It brings along with it the beer and Co Cheese partnership that the punters love, and hey, what’s not to like about beer and quality grilled cheese sandwiches? As from the beginnings, the bar is basically a taproom for Beijing’s Jing-A Brewery however taps seemed to have been given leeway to other breweries of late. There’s a pleasant patio here and it gets lively on weekend evenings. A nice addition to the rejuvenated Dagu Lu dining and bar strip. Closest metro stop:- West Nanjing Road. |
58 /100 De Refter (Bar) 181 JINXIAN LU, NEAR MAOMING NAN LU, HUANGPU DISTRICT De Refter has been refurbished and now looks much smarter and feels more ’lounge bar’ than it’s previous fitout. The focus remains on Belgian beers with the usual suspects making an appearance. I can’t say there’s too much to excite however. Food is an attempt at hearty cuisine but pretty standard. The owners are friendly folks. Closest metro stop:- South Shaaxi Road. |
40 /100 200 TAICANG LU It was mentioned by someone that this place feels like a Chinese Paulaner and they’re not far wrong. Situated in Xintiandi on the corner of Taicang & Madang Lu, it’s hard to miss. A pils, wheat and dark lager available. The beers are just average. Service was hit and miss on my visit but mostly miss. Closest metro stop:- Huangpi South Road. |
68 /100 District (Bar) 284 YUYUAN ROAD Cool little bar only a short walk from Jing’an Temple. It’s tied to the Duvel Moortgat importers thus Firestone Walker and Boulevard always feature on tap which is not a bad thing. Bar snacks are reliably tasty at good prices. Nice space upstairs with a shuffleboard. Can get busy during evenings but I’ve never seen it fully packed so it’s a good meeting spot for a drink. Closest metro stop:- Jing’an Temple. |
62 /100 World of Beer - Shanghai (Bar) 85 FUMIN ROAD Next door to the Dr Beer brewery on Fumin Lu. The first World of Beer location in China. Sports bar feel with a big range of taps and bottles, mostly imports. The fridge stock is sorted by regions. In all honesty, I struggled to find a beer I actually wanted to drink at the prices they were asking. I ended up settling on a Boxing Cat Contender! Staff are friendly enough and they do a good job talking through the beers and pouring tasters for newcomers. But it’s just not my kind of place really, don’t gel with the vibe whatsoever. Closest metro stop:- Jing’an Temple. |
70 /100 739 DINGXI LU Number three of Kaiba locations in Shanghai. It’s a dedicated trip out here so really only worth popping in if staying nearby. The beer selection is the same as the other Kaiba bars and nothing noteworthy usually but every once in a while there will be new stock in. The food is much better here and they do a decent burger and beer deal during happy hour. Pleasant patio area out back. Closest metro stop:- Yan’an West Road. |
