“A great brewery with good craft beers, you can see that. I think Barba Pale Ale is their most famous beer, I liked the IPA the most, strong, sufficiently aromatic. I did not visit the brewery, it was closed. But if you are in Croatia, especially in Dalmatia and Split, you can find their beers in many places.“

“Well, about time I properly visited Plan B (not to be confused in any way with Tap B, which it usually is) and reviewed it here. It's by all means a serious place, located in the sadly deteriorating beauty of the enormous Koteks - Gripe area. The owner was linked to the chain of bakeries/fast foods that actually ran a tiny brewery (eM-Ka) producing Gold Pils ages ago, and later the Plan B place on Žnjan, before it was cleared of beachside bars. This incarnation of Plan B, however, isn't going anywhere. A modern restaurant, classic in appearance with a few personal touches and a pro service, pretty popular for pizza and burgers, it also features a solid beer selection. It does seem to be a Zagrebačka / Grif place, sure, but there's a pretty okay selection of Croatian craft beer - which is always a boon in a place like this. Also, one of Tap B's beers, the Gad pilsner, is dedicated to the owner, and he's been cooperating with the local craft beer seen for a long while. I mean, though it doesn't necessarily have the best selection in town, it's definitely head and shoulders above nearly all restaurants when it comes to it, and it's not that far from the centermost center, worth taking a detour to to avoid the tourist traps of the center.“

“2020 : Very central, tourists & expats but not badly so. Smoky obviously. Nicely run, very friendly service, knowledgeable. Noting crazy on tap but very good selection of locals & foreign, some very good hoppy Croatian craft on tap. Small but solid bottled & canned selection. Cocktails & spirits. I had some very nice walnut Rakia. Slightly more expensive than elsewhere but very nice ambience. Probably my favorite of the bars visited in town. Atmosphere and service definitely helped.“

“This place just rocks located almost at the harbor, near the small boulevard. Not a place where you would expect much but a tourist trap but this place just hit the spot. Tiny shop with two guys behind the counter, reasonable prices. They pick the beers for you so no self-service. They had a bunch of fridges behind them. Great selection of Croation beers not massive but lots of good stuff, I told them what I wanted & they made great suggestions. Everything that got was really nice. They also had some DE, BE, USA etc. beers. No place even comparable to it around.“

“A brand new, already very much successful place located under a string of newly built apartment and business buildings right across the Poljička street from the quarter I grew up in. The interior is fairly small - bit dark, though we visited late, and smokey if I remember correctly, but there's a huge patio - pretty nice, unless the jugo (southern) wind is blowing. 10 taps - partly Carlsberg Croatia's stuff (if I remember correctly - Guinness, some Pan, Brooklyn East IPA etc.), Hacker-Pschorr helles and a few local craft beers - Familia Karet, Tap B's Trapula and so. There should be bottles as well I guess, but I didn't get a good look at the list. Not the most exciting lineup right now, but the place has huge potential, which the owner seems happy/enthusiastic to start using up, and I hope that, together and with the help of the the local scene, it's fulfilled as much as possible. Right now a good place if you're in that area of Split (even their coffee's very good allegedly), let's see how it goes from here!“

“Metal/rock-themed bar opened on the former Mandrill brewpub premises. Nicely tweaked interior design with a large bar. A few taps, local craft, I'd venture and say four, but haven't confirmed, with a wide enough (for Split) bottle selection as well (and a menu with some funny errors). Cannot say a bad word about the service either. Quite expensive, but you are in the city center. Excellent metal night events on Wednesdays too. All in all a very welcome place for Split!“

“Leopold's has been resurrected, in Split's "ghetto", that's to say, within the walls of Diocletian's palace. How many craft beer bars can boast being within a huge, UNESCO-protected Roman palace? Not many I'd venture. And that's a huge plus, carrying a minus as well, as the "patio" is tiny, just a few tables on the narrow passage out side I reckon. The inside is a bit too dark for my personal liking, but okay enough. 4 taps - Mandrill's Pale Ale and Porter, joined by an insanely rare sighting of LAB Barba Imperial, once one of the few best beers in Croatia (now... less so) and something else I've forgotten. Mixed local and foreign selection in the single fridge, highish prices, not as wide as it was in the old location. Quite a bit more tourist-oriented, of course. The lady behind the bar speaks fantastic English, but though I've almost become a tourist in my hometown, it wasn't yet required in my case. But that says enough about the summer clientele - the palace was choc-full of Scandinavians when I visited. All in all, we'll see how it goes - as always, full support for Leo's ventures, I'll definitely visit it when the locals take control of the town center again later in the year.“

“Third place at the same location, after To Je To's second incarnation and Old Hat, but starting more seriously perhaps than its predecessors in some ways - it did hire people who (try to) know their beer, like Mario V., who's a great guy with solid knowledge - and as such a very rare beast in Split. Okay, modern interior. They didn't stray much from Dalmatian breweries on their taplist (LAB (one of rare places where they are still on tap at), Tap B, Familia, Barilo, Brewville...), a lot of which won't change much, but Mario's trying to expand the selection, like with Medvedgrad & Maskeron's Lunatic. And it's a pretty balanced selection anyway, solid one-stop shop for a bunch of ticks in good selection even for out of town visitors. The owner seems to be understanding so hopefully things will go up - Split desperately deserves more good craft beer places with knowledge and passion behind them!“

“Harat's has started expanding in Croatia beyond Zagreb last summer, and so they opened their Split branch...extremely centrally, basically on Marmontova, perhaps the busiest pedestrian street in the center. They went through classic pub tropes, but it was nice inside. Another pro is frequent live music playing above. Truly pro waitstaff when we were there, a bit overworked. Wouldn't ask about particular beer knowledge, but they did their job well. The 15 or so taps is very much a lot for Split, but unsurprisingly, the selection seems "set in stone" and while technically somewhat balanced, offers nothing exciting. Fairly expensive Nova Runda APA was a solid choice (30 for 0.5l), alternatively The Garden IPA for 36 for 0.5l)... As tourist traps go, this is a good one, but not a place I would likely frequent. Shame rhey aren't sliiightly more daring with their taplist,“

CroCraft & More (Beer Store)
UL. JOSIPA JOVIĆA 93, MALL OF SPLIT, FLOOR 0
“CroCraft, owned by Klement is largest beer distributor in Dalmatia. Finally they opened a store, in Mall of Split, biggest store mall in Split. Now it is easier to find beer you want. I am also wondering if they are going to make an update on their web-site. They have a mix of domestic and beers from other countries with ratio 70:30. It is not in a centre of Split, but it is a good position. In store there is an offer not only for beers but other domestic (craft) products. Worth to visit, find a present or fulfill your stock of beers. If you want domestic beer (from Croatia) it is No1 place in Dalmatia. Marko explained how to get there, I won't ;) “

CroCraft & More (Beer Store)
UL. JOSIPA JOVIĆA 93, MALL OF SPLIT, FLOOR 0
“CroCraft, one of Croatia's biggest craft beer distributors, finally opened an outlet of their own, located in the Mall of Split - and as such far from the tourist center, but filling a major gap on the beer map of Split. Effort was taken to decorate it, fairly modern, and some 4-5 fridges with craft beer show a solid selection of mainly Croatian craft, including a fair bit of specials, with a passable selection of foreign stuff, mainly sourced form other distributors. Managed to get multiple ticks (Chimay Green, Rochefort Triple, a couple of Omnipollos, but also Šibenska Faust, Brlog Pošip Grape Ale and so on). Nice little selection of wines, solid collection of spirits as well, n/a's and Kombucha, with a full lineup of Buzdovan ciders. Also, they have a bunch of non-beverage craft stuff - like local Nadalina chocolate. Klement, the owner of CroCraft was behind the counter today - and, of course, he was very much helpful to the customers, joking around and so on. Not sure who works there normally, but unsure who is usually working there. Anyway, if you're by car, it's a must-stop really to stock up on beer here, even other stuff. Even worth an expedition from the center. Really glad it's there! How to get here: Bus lines 1, 5, 6, 10, 16, 18 and 22 (direction away from the center) take you here apparently, can't miss it once you're nearby. They also have a free bus from the ferry harbor but it goes like 4 times a day. “

“Amidst a fairly depressing time for Split's scene when it came to places closing and the beer selection being more limited than it was pre-COVID, with the few breweries and places surviving clinging onto tried and true stuff, rarely experimenting with specials - and those that do being horrendous at signalling in any way, shape or form what they actually have and that they have a new special on tap (Baraka being the most egregious offender in the department, but very few aren't), it's really refreshing to at least get a new brewpub. Run by an experienced homebrewer, Prostor (the bar, with the Protokol brewery being downstairs), is quite inconspicuous from the outside. Located right next to the last bus station before going eastward (and quite close to the first station going westwards from) the busy "Pazar" / Glavna Tržnica / whatever central local bus station. Modern, a bit dark in design, it sports 7 taps but 4 beers they started with - blonde, pale, IPA, wheat. The wheat was true to style (generic wheat ale) and flawless, the rest were in need of tweaking, though the pale ale worked nicely too. They all cost 18kn for 0.5l, which is very cheap for Split standards, and I'd guess that the recipes of some were tweaked to get inside the cost (looking at the IPA in particular). Sadly, a smoking place with very little to no patio, but earlier in the day it was quite okay and the ambient was fine, interesting music selection. The host, I'd guess the owner/brewer, was great, putting in extra snacks and a round, and lifted the overall experience. All in all, a welcome addition to the scene you should check out perhaps, especially if they tweak the beers further a little bit. Quick update: They've expanded the selection a bit, and the beer quality has gone up as well!“

“2021 update: Baraka has in the meantime found its crowd, mainly going for eating (keeping the hype about that, the food's good from what little I'd had) and for the regular craft and industrial beers on tap and for events. They apparently have 30+ taps overall, all are likely filled. So what's wrong, why isn't the score higher? Well, due to indolence or lack of knowledge from the owners/staff, nobody knows what's exactly on those taps, apart from one guy among the staff who, when you ask, comes proudly stating he knows all of that by heart. Great for you bro, but that's pure madness. It's not written anywhere, not in Baraka, not online, ANYWHERE, it's not promoted anywhere, and so special beers are wilting away, dying on tap because nobody knows they are available and what their prices are (those are a bit ho-hum too at times). 9 month old NEIPAs? Check. Not entirely gone because of the cold room/keg area, but damn... And full price too. Amateur hour in that aspect, currently a waste of money invested into the whole (awesome!) setup and a money drain. And it could be the best place for beer in Dalmatia if someone cared/bothered. If you don't give a damn about specials, why fill 15-20 taps with them? It's a good place to visit if you don't see it as a craft beer place and just go for food / gigs with friends, but they should really get their sh*t together about some things. 2020 review: So, a brand spanking new place coming out of the ruins of Kobaje, Baraka is a modern, kinda industrial-ish place, a "barrack", surrounded by a long patio around it. L-staped insides, with a bar to the right, sloping down towards the stage left and then right again to the bottom bar. Fairly big too. Vaguely sterile maybe, but actually kinda works. The place tries to be everything - a beer bar, restaurant, music venue, going from fancy to bikers when it comes to the crowd. Somewhat indifferent staff, not manning the bottom bar - where all the fancy beers are - but they will go there and get a beer if you ask. Unsure about the level of beer knowledge, at least with all of them. Nowhere to see what the beers are and what the price is apart from a menu outside, where they are, in tiny letters. A bunch of industrial shit at high prices (Split prices, maybe a tiny bit more), some local craft here and there, and stuff like Omnipollo, Andersen, Lervig, Northern Monk... Omnipollo Anagram for 90+kn for 0.2l will probably last for a long, looong time, and with the state of the local beer scene, likely most others too. They do have cold rooms though, which is a plus. Got Amundsen Pixie Dust for 0.5l/58kn, no options for less, no flexibility in prices, which is a bit meh, but they might be following official glassware blindly, for better or worse. As a foreign visitor, you can get Croatian beers cheaper elsewhere in town (unless you're up for some macro ticks), but on the other hand, who knows what they will conjure up, as they ARE trying hard. Not necessarily doing everything right, but it's gonna be interesting to see where this goes in the future.“

“Jens said it all really. 3 and a half years in and nothing has changed really. A beautiful place by Prokurative. Modern design, steampunky touches maybe, footie on TVs, wooden tables. Friendly, quick, if not entirely attentive staff, wouldn't ask for details about the beers that much perhaps. On tap they have the "better" Carlsberg Croatia selection - Zlatni Pan, Carlsberg, a couple of Grimbergens, Kronenbourg Blanc and Guinness. All for fairly hefty prices (25 for Pan, 40 for Guinness... oof). A mix of highly overpriced Croatian craft beers in bottles is also there - Medvedgrad, 5th Element, Barba, Zeppelin's Tovar, San Servolo... all for 32-38hrk. You can get all of those much cheaper elsewhere, even a couple of minutes walk away. That killed the draw for me in the end. Might have good food, haven't tried. This is in the end perhaps mostly catering to tourists, with its location and all, so the prices are kinda understandable, but with the selection not being of any greater interest, it's just not an essential place for a beer tourist.“

MAČAK (Bar)

“Well, this is an interesting concept - a sports center (and a pretty big one) in the middle of the outlying Mertojak quarter, that also has a pretty cool bar, with 6-8 taps and a pretty good bottle selection apparently. The bar is okay, the part we were in, at the entrance, might as well be any bigger neighborhood bar, with a TV and all. The prices are ST-style, but there is a pretty good happy hour. No proper beer list or tap list in evidence where we were, some macro stuff - lagers on tap, Trapula from the neighboring Tap B and Nova Runda C4 - so C4 it was, and it was in pretty good shape! Looking at their FB page, they do seem to have some specials and more daring stuff showing up on tap here and there, but sadly they don't update their online presence properly so can't really see what they have. I mean, great to have fairly close to me if I ever crave C4, but they really should make it better known what they have.“

It has really local feel,as every their beer has some local nickname. Staff is well educated, and can tell you about freshness, and recommend a style. Trapula is must have. “Hah... Heavy often told me "if XY is on the site, Splash can be as well", neither of us thinking of course it was worth adding for beer, but here it is and here I am. It's a tiny, somewhat dingy and dark but very much cult metal/rock place in centermost Split, by one of the side entries into the palace, in a narrow street. The beer selection is definitely above average in Split - which isn't saying much, but still, quite okay. Macro stuff - definitely Pan & suchlike, but always from what I remember boosted by some of the Medvedgrad range, maybe Barba and definitely, since recently, a couple of types of Iron Maiden Trooper beer, on tap included! Anyway, not really that relevant as a beer place, but metalheads & rockers will enjoy this little musical haven in the very center of the town and should probably pay it a visit and grab a beer.“

Short list of beers but many good ones. Free WiFi, clean toilets. This was the first time in one week someone started to smoke inside, I really hate this Croatian habit - I experienced it last year and more frequently then. “Tucked in Split's Trstenik quarter and not really close to the main roads, Tap B isn't really the town's most accessible beer place. What it is, however, is one of the rare craft beer islands outside of the town center, and, as such, essential. Run by four (former) homebrewers, it's a modern place, not too big, not too small, with the tanks perching behind the bar and the row of taps. Their two beers so far - really like the Trapula pale ale - and a string of beers from friendly breweries, with DBC's Grego joining Trapula and Mirakul. Young crowd for the most part, enjoying the beers, which are priced pretty fairly. Unsure what the staff's generally like, but the son of one of the owners/brewers was behind the bar when I was there and did a pretty good job. It has huge potential and the beers are great - I hope it gets the local attention it deserves and grows. Those taps need to be filled! A must-visit when in town in any case - if you're not with a car, take the bus no. 17 to the Moliških Hrvata stop and just walk down south, down the stairs with "SMISAO" written above them, and there it will be, to your right.“

“Visited with friends. Was likely overdue checking it out. A tiny, but nicely decorated place just across the tiny square from Drama, this is a far more relevant place now. Four taps, including Positive NEIPA 2 and Crafter's Hopper, which are uncommon sights, the much more common sight of Zmajska Pale Ale and a rare remnant of Red Baron. They apparently have Nova Runda coming soon. The prices were okay, not the lowest around, not the highest around. A mix of macros and craft in bottles, not too extensive. Good service, the girl behind the bar seemed to actually know and care about beer more than average bartender in Croatian craft bars. Hard to gauge overall. Pop in while exploring the old town adjoining to the palace, you might just find something interesting that's not available in other places!“

“Hah, I was in half a mind to add the two bigger Victa stores even before, but hey, why not add them. and since my colleague here didn't bother to write anything about what this is and why it's on the site, guess I gotta elaborate.

Victa is a pretty ordinary local grocery store / supermarket chain based in Split with, apparently 9 stores around, two of which - this one and the one near the Firule hospital - seem to be the biggest / best stocked from my experience. They have, however, a far more elaborate beer selection than any other supermarket chain in town, local or national - a solid range of macro stuff complemented by, when I last checked, a bunch of English bottles imported through Vrutak and random craft and crafty stuff imported by Harats, along with a good selection of basic Croatian craft beers. Don't expect seasonals or rarities or even extreme styles, but this is, along with its easier-to-reach sibling the only place where you actually have something resembling a selection outside of the centermost center so very much useful. To Splti's shame. It's a generic grocery store, and don't expect anyone to know jack shit about beer. The service was mostly okay apart from one time when one of the cashiers intentionally acted dumb and tried to stupidly overcharge me with something, but hey, who knows if she even works there anymore. All in all, if you're a local anywhere near that part of town and you like craft beer it's not as if you have a better choice.“

“A tiny little place, more of a store than a bar, quite central in Split, near the old town. Italian cheese & ham & beer store really. Really quaint inside, tastefully decorated. Just what, 3 tables inside, teeny tiny little patio outside. No facilities, but you are allowed to use them at the pizza place across the street. The lady working there was friendly, helpful and while not fully knowledgeable about beer as such (missing on a 10) knew and was interested enough to be able to help people out. We also got free little snacks to try with our beer, a couple of times, which is cool. They carry a very interesting selection of Birra del Borgo beers (they are the importers), including seasonals and specials - and that selection was now backed with two rare Nomad Brewing collaborations, both great beers, quite extreme for the market here - so they don’t "play it safe" like some. Now, the smell of cheese isn’t perfect for rating, but this was a very nice experience indeed. The prices are high for Croatian standards, but not crazily bloated by any means - it’s just that those beers aren’t cheap by default. Not a place I’d frequent, but I’m quite sure that I’ll visit it again each time I’m back home. Even good for beer geek tourists - you will more than likely catch a beer or two you haven’t had before.“

“Great little store - a gem, in fact. Tiny bottle shop with no self service, aa all the fridges (stacked with 250 different beers, including most Croatian craft beers) are behind the counter. But the guy behind the counter is very friendly and knowledgeable. Very reasonable prices, and you can enjoy your purchases outside in the sunshine, with a lovely view of the harbour. Very easy to find, just a few minutes’ walk from the old city.“

“Well, Split’s first microbrewery since 2009. Split’s first true western-style micro. It makes a pretty good beer so far and will likely make more. Run by people who have in the last 2 years become my dear friends. But right now, this is only a production plant. It was interesting, for me, to see the unique, if Ipim/Medvedgrad-"influenced", Polivar Zeman plant from 1995 that I’ve seen last in what, 2007, at its original location - Imo Pilsner. But apart from that, nothing to do there. This is just the production plant, without a taproom - you miiiight get to try Barba from the tank and that’s it. Visits by appointment only I guess and for "good reason". Not sure if this entry should really be here.“

“Wonderful interested ladies helping out. By far the best store in the surroundings and the last outpost at least until Dubrovnik that I know of. One of the few good bottle shops I’ve found in Croatia (also one in Zadar and Zagreb). Good Belgian and local selection but I miss some lambic.“

“This place is more like a kiosk than a bottle shop. If you find yourself in Split looking for bottles of beer it is worth it to stop buy, but I would recommend having a firm idea of what you are looking for. Almost all of the beer was hidden behind the counter in coolers too far away to see a name, description and price. I attempted to see what was in the coolers, but my limited knowledge of Croatian craft beer left me with little idea of what to buy. The never ending line also meant asking for advice would be difficult. I decided to dip out and come back later with a better idea of what I wanted. Prices for the Croatian beer seemed reasonable (I paid about €2 for a Zmajska Pivovara Pale Ale), but I have no idea if the bottles from other countries are priced well. I did recognize some German, Belgian and American craft beer labels in the coolers. While it was a quick and weird experience, I was able to at least get something I was interested in trying.“
